Manny Acta Gets Mad
Ok, ok, it's not exactly Joe Mikulik last year, when the Asheville Tourists skipper engaged in a real freak-out freak-out. Nor is it Phillip Wellman, who I really thought was on hallucinogens or something when he started crawling along the ground. It's not even Lou Piniella, not close.
Still, it's nice to see the Manny Acta mini-rant against Mark Zuckerman from the WashTimes for a couple of reasons.
1) You get to see the PR guy, standing by the skipper's side, stone-faced, a bit uncomfortable, but letting the world know that he's got his manager's back, or side, or whatever.
2) You get to see the back of Zuckerman's head, stone-faced, a bit uncomfortable.
3) I hate it when pro sports figures claim loudly that they never read the papers. It's nice to see someone admit it. Now all we need is for a local sports figure to rant and rail against bloggers.
4) The hyper-calm voice, the persuasive but a little bit scary line of reasoning....I think more is in store for us this summer.
As impressive as their recent resurgence has been, the Washington Nationals have known all along one dirty little secret: Most of these wins have come against lesser competition.
Acta makes the persuasive argument that, since the Nats were supposed to be the worst team in the history of baseball, the adjective "lesser" is something of a misnomer, although Zuckerman is clearly using it in the sense of "lesser than the Mets" rather than "lesser than the Nats." Anyhow, here's Manny's argument, and apologies for getting to this a week later, but it doesn't exist for me until I've seen in on the INterwebs.
