George Karl Wears Gil Zeros

One thing I learned yesterday: there's really no way to look like a cool and collected journalist while trying to take photos of an NBA coaching legend's sneakers in an arena hallway.

But I spotted George Karl wearing Gil-Zeros, and I couldn't help but stop and stare and wonder why. Is this some sort of nod to Gilbert's underappreciated past? An early-onset interest in buying a time share on Gilbert's Tahitian island? Simple solidarity from a UNC guy with a noted Duke agitator who's beefing with Coach K? Or, could it be, a latent desire to bring Gilbert to Denver, or even for Karl himself to come to D.C.? So I waited him out, and asked for an explanation.

"I have a guy on my staff from Arizona and he gets them for free," Karl told me. "That's it. Plus, I like 'em. They're different. And I like low cuts."

Fascinating. I wonder if other coaches have caught on yet. Maybe Karl will be the trend-setter.

This also might be a good time to mention that last night, Nick Young's mom kept calling her son "Kobe." When he took jumpers, she would scream "Kobe!!!" Or when he got ready to pull up, she would intensely whisper "Hit it, just hit it, Kobe!!!"

You should know that Nick's dad became a Magic Johnson fan in 1979 and the family rooted for the Lakers until Magic's retirement, and then the family--or at least Nick's mom--began rooting for individual players instead of teams, such as Kobe and T-Mac. But Kobe became Nick's favorite, one of the players he modeled his own game after, and so it's one of his mom's pet nicknames for him.

And after his spotty opening game in Gilbert's Adidas shoes, he was back to wearing Kobe's Nike shoes yesterday.

So to recap, we have the Nuggets coach wearin the Wizards star's shoes, and the Wizard's new draft pick wearing the Lakers star's shoes.

Irreverant Humor and the Internets, my two favorite I's. I still can't believe they pay you for this stuff.

You, Steinz, are my hero!

This is all pretty good stuff, but not even remotely comparable to the insanity that is the Kenner League, which is actually in DC right now. You must watch and interview Byron Mouton and the coach of Electro-Lite when you are back in town, otherwise the DC Sports Bog is a fraud.
