Here We Go Again
Q: Remember last year, when the Redskins went 0-for-the-preseason and everyone panicked and there were extended debates about whether preseason futility meant anything and all of that? Well, how many yards did they gain in their first preseason game last year?
Q: And what about in their first preseason game this year?
Q: So that would be 19 fewer yards in this season of preseason ardor. By the way, what did Joe Gibbs say before the 2006 preseason opener?
A: "We want to be polished and sharp."
Q: And what did Joe Bugel say before the 2007 preseason opener?
A: "We've got to get razor sharp."
Q: What else did Buges say before the game?
A: "We're angry. We stunk the joint up last year, and we don't want to do that two years in a row."
Q: Strong words. So what was Gibbs's response after the game on Saturday night?
A: "We were struggling like mad." Also, "Obviously, we're going to have to play a lot better than that."
Q: How did this compare to his reaction after last year's preseason opener?
A: You mean when he said "I don't think any one of us looked particularly good" and "For us, it's really hard to find a positive?" Pretty similar, I guess.
Q: Good news, please?
A: Well, the Redskins scored 14 on Saturday. Last year's team averaged a tad under 7 ppg in the preseason. So it would seem this team is twice as good, which means 10-6, I guess.
