Mini Meat Hook's Mohawk
Dmitri Young's two sons were all over the field before gametime yesterday. That's nothing new. You often hear tales of young lads growing up in the clubhouse; these boys are proof that such a phrase is no mere rhetorical riff. What was new--to me, anyhow--was Dmitri's younger son's mohawk, which is easily in the list of top 5 mohawks I've seen in my life. Felipe Lopez was rubbing the mohawk when I first saw it. I went up to Da Meat Hook and asked whether I could photograph his son. He agreed.
So I asked his son, Damon, and without prompting, he struck the pose you see above. Then his father gave him an approving fist bump. I'm trying to figure out how to submit that photo to the Pulitzer committee.
Earlier this week, colleague Barry Svrluga had asked Dmitri whether he might go 'hawk before the end of this season.
"It's too pretty," Dmitri told him, "and it takes too much time."
I also asked young Damon (age: 8) whether he has a nickname that can rival his father's. "Damage," he told me. The name fits him. Soon, he had left the comfort of the Nats and invaded the Phillies' warm-ups, attempting to wrassle various Phillies to the ground. I left "Damage" and went over to chat with older brother Owen, 10, who also has some pretty noteworthy locks. I asked what he thought about the Damage 'Hawk.
"That's hot, dawg, that's hot," Owen said. I asked if he was considering a mohawk of his own.
"I wouldn't look so good with it," he said, before adding, "where's all your hair?" Great question.
Since he was brother to Damage and son of Da Meat Hook, I figured Owen also had a tremendous nickname, but he said he did not.
"Who has the best nickname of all-time?" he asked me. I wasn't sure.
"Scooter," he suggested, speaking of Phil Rizzuto. "Or The Babe. Or The Great Georgia Peach." Then he also mentioned J-Roll (Jimmy Rollins) and Flip (Felipe Lopez) and Goozie (Cristian Guzman). "Those are the hottest," he said. I implicitly trust his opinion on this and all other matters of hotness.
