The Gilbert Cartoon Series
UPDATE: A Gilbert cartoon already exists! Thanks to The Basketball Jones.
We've all heard about these Gilbert television projects that have been percolating during this longest of offseasons (preseason tickets for the Mavs game at Mason went on sale yesterday), but ESPN the Mag seems to suggest in this fortnight's issue that taping might actually happen, and fairly soon. Let's recap.
Gilbert blog, June 14: I'm contemplating on a Reality TV show. I might do one this summer if ESPN will pick it up. I don't want to be on BET because then I won't be on regularly. If you look at their reality shows like the one Vince Young did, it's not an eye-catcher. So if ESPN picks it up, I might consider it. That's for this summer and then I have one next summer and it's going to be the business side of me and that should be funny because I don't know anything about business so I'm going to sound like Paris Hilton or Jessica Simpson. I mean, I'm not going to sound like, "Do buffalo wings come from buffaloes?" There ain't going to be any comments like that, but for business people, I'm going to sound like a straight idiot.
Dime Magazine, August/September Issue: I want to do some type of advertising/business show. That will be funny because I don't know anything about business. I'll be like Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie [sic]. Or I'll be saying things like Jessica Simpson, telling people I can't eat buffalo wings because I don't eat buffalo.
[Note: Apparently there's some confusion on whether or not Gilbert will be speaking of buffalo wings and buffalo, but after a few production meetings the MTV people should be able to iron that out.]
ESPN the Mag, this fortnight: Inspired in part by the popularity of his blog, Gilbert Arenas is bringing Gilbertology to a library, TV and laptop near you. In addition to writing a hoops-themed self-help book, the quirky Wizards guard will be the gaming guru in a video series for FoxSports.com, and is pitching a reality series that would place him in Simple Life-like settings, tentatively shooting next year. Agent Zero is also developing a cartoon series centering on himself as a child. How that would differ from his real life is unclear.
Itals added, but holy Hanna Barbara, a Gilbert cartoon series?!!?!?!? What sort of scrapes will young animated Gilbert get into, exactly? I'm envisioining a Dennis the Menace type set-up, where a rambunctious freckle-faced Gil is forever infuriating Mr. Grunfeld next door, also starring animated Abe Pollin in the role of Mrs. Wilson, animated G-Wiz in the role of Margaret, animated DeShawn in the role of Joey and animated Walshy in the role of Ruff. In episode one, Gilbet and DeShawn attempt to steal cookies from Mr. Grunfeld's back porch, leading Mr. Grunfeld to shoot a squirt gun at DeShawn, as pouting Gil is then reprimanded by third-grade teacher Mr. Jordan, while elsewhere a cute young girl named Brenda moves into the neighborhood and her younger brother 'Dre decides that girls are really icky.
