Gilbert vs. A.D.

The back of my head, as Gilbert speaks. Look, there's the Times's John Mitchell! Photo ruthlessly stolen from Lindsay's blog.

You know how you always read the fawning profile that says something like "this awesome athlete is so awesomely competitive that he'll knock over a deaf blind three-year-old child and break both his legs and then throw him into a tree in order to win a neighborhood flag football game?" Well, Gilbert Arenas is so competitive that he's now challenged Antonio Daniels to a weight-loss competition. Forget Randy Ayers; Eddie should have hired Jenny Craig.

(Note to serious Wizards fans: they're joking, and the trainers will make sure they're at proper playing weight, and you don't need to send packets of dried meat to the Verizon Center. Well, at least A.D. is joking, anyhow.)

The audio of this dialogue comes courtesy of Dave "It's In the Net" "It's There" Johnson, who is, besides me, the only person in the world going to Richmond for Wizards training camp and Kansas City for hot hot hot MLS action in the same week. Thanks for the audio, Dave.

"This man ran all summer, lost one pound," Gilbert said, referring to A.D., and kicking off the sort of conversation that paid my bills last winter.

"You're crazy," A.D. said.

Read more below.

Gilbert: "You weighed 186 last season."

A.D. [outraged]: "What...?"

Gil: "How much you weigh?"

Lindsay Czarniak: "This may be your chance to settle the deal, Antonio."

A.D.: "Hold on, hold on, hold on, let me see what this says...."

Gil: "He weighed 186, and now he weighs 185."

A.D.: "I wouldn't be at 186 if I tried."

Gil: "How much you weigh?"

A.D.: "Right now? Probably about, you know, 192."

Gil: "Oh, you weighed one-ninety-six, you lost four pounds, my fault."

Lindsay: "Can we talk about this deal you guys have going on, because I know Gilbert talked about it before. What is this competition you have between the two of you?"

A.D. "You know, last year what happened, Gil got on the scale before one of the games and he was at like 260 or something like that. He was at like 270. So he went into like a depression, and before the game he's in the locker room, in the steam room, riding the bike, doing push-ups, so many different things. And I'm like, 'It's not that big of a deal.' And he's like 'Well, A.D., I've got to lose 50 pounds by tomorrow,' you know? So ever since then, he's just been infatuated with the whole.... (laughing)

Gil: "209, 209 baby, I lost 16 pounds."

A.D.: "He's been infatuated with the whole weight thing. (still laughing) And when I talked to him this summer I was telling him the different things that I was doing to stay in shape. You know, running and boxing, so many different things to stay in shape. And I told him this has been the lightest that I've been since I was in college. So ever since I told him that, he's been....

Lindsay: "Pulling out the parachutes"

A.D.: "Right, running triathlons, all types of different things to say he lost more weight than me. But it's all in fun."

You see? It's all in fun. So Gilbert won't be spiking Antonio's Vitamin Water with magic weight gain powder. Seriously.
