The Local College Basketball Poll

Atlantic 11 regular GW should open in the middle of the pack. (AP Photo)

In Year One of the Atlantic 11 poll's existence, a gently rotating panel of about 80 college basketball fans, media members and Washington Post sycophants voted on a weekly local men's basketball poll, selecting the most impressive teams among the 27 Division I programs in Maryland, Virginia and the District. The most ambitious voters also provided pithy comments, the best of which were published here, and the very best of which then appeared in Tuesday's Washington Post and occasionally earned the ire of local coaching staffs. It was great fun, although I sometimes promised various prizes to various voters and never came through with anything.

Regardless, a new season approaches. The preseason poll will be voted for on Nov. 4, and published on Nov. 5. The area is virtually frozen with anticipation. Georgetown fans are already plotting their "why do you hate the Hoyas?!?!?" messages. Voters are already plotting their "Gary Williams sweats a lot" pithy comments, whilst Gary Williams is riding around College Park in a Lamborghini. And I'm trying to figure out if my preseason No. 2 should be VCU or George Mason.

Anyhow, we had a great crew of voters last year, but I assume we'll lose some members from normal attrition, ennui and death, and so I wanted to see whether anyone wants to be added to the voting rolls. This is sort of how Florida conducts its elections. If you're a new potential voter and you're interested in signing up, send me an e-mail. You have to be committed to voting every Monday by noon, and you have to be anxiously looking forward to Nov. 9, when Loyola visits Towson and Maryland-Eastern Shore travels to VCU.

I await my T-shirt. However, an acceptable substitute would be a hand-signed letter from Karl Hobbs complimenting me on my sense of humor.
