College Basketball Begins in Foggy Bottom

With an exhibition against UDC, a taut overtime thriller. Here's one way to describe the outcome, from the UDC Web site:

In an exciting pre-season basketball game, the George Washington University Colonials narrowly escaped a major upset tonight when they defeated the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 74-71, in overtime at the Charles E. Smith Center.

Sounds exciting! Here's another way, from the GW fan board:

In a game (and I use the word "game" here VERY loosely as a "game" typically implies two teams competing against one another to determine who is better, not two groups each wearing similar outfits attempting to overcome their own complete sense of worthlessness while proving the other group is ever so slightly more pathetic) where most fans felt like eating a month's supply of rancid potato seeds, then crawling into an abandoned bus and half-time!....the Colonials "under-mistaked" the Firebirds to escape with a non-loss.

That, friends, is how you write a lede. Tell me more!

I've seen more points in a redacted, water-boarding memo.....Imagine if your underwear were replaced with a 10% polyester/90% flesh-eating bacteria blend soaked in paint remover....this defense felt worse....No point guard at all is better than the revolving door of ball-hogging carbon blobs who continuously ruined each and every possession....while simultaneously dumbing the senses of a great democracy might I add.....Rice shot as if he had two glass eyes and oven-mitts on, while Wilmore's game is not suitable for broadcast over television, radio, Morse code or even didgeridoo.

So, uh, GW didn't look that great then? That's just awesome. Four days away from the debut of the College Hoops Spectatcular Poll, let's review some other local hoops news.

* GW's George, the worst mascot in America? And Gunston not even mentioned? So says College Hoops Heaven.

* The preseason All-American team is chock full o' Localness, with three Locals out of 21 players: Roy Hibbert, Sean Singletary and, gulp, Eric Maynor. We're even better represented on's all Mid-Major team, with four Locals out of 25: Will Thomas (George Mason), Reggie Williams (VMI), Tywain McKee (Coppin State) and Gerald Brown (Loyola). Considering Local teams constitute significantly fewer than 10 percent of national DI programs, it should be another bang-up year. VCU, George Mason and ODU are all in the Mid-Major Top 25.

* This isn't exactly breaking news, but the USA Today/ESPN preseason poll is out, and we're all over the poll the poll's "Also Receiving Votes" portion. Let's see, Georgetown fifth, Virginia tied for 42nd, VCU 44th, Old Dominion tied for 46th, George Mason tied for 49th, Maryland tied for 52nd.

* Morgan State, sleeping giant, unleashed!!!

* Virginia does not land an "$8 trillion" recruit.

Water-Boarding, Flesh Eating Bacteria, UDC Basketball...Talk about a painful post.

Bog Man, what kind of a cheese to do you take with your Wine-stein?

I would've said sleeping giant, ready to rampage through the Harbor and all of its posh establishments, but kudos to the Examiner.

so the Examiner thinks that a predicted 4th place finish in the MEAC constitutes "lofty expectations"? then my lofty expectations for the next 6 months include dressing myself every day and remembering to take the trash out on Sunday nights. i just might get there!

Man, that game was ug-lee. I'm so glad GW didn't lose. Now Georgetown should have nothing to fear by playing GW.
