Nolan Smith: "That Guy Fell"
There are two parts to this narration of Nolan Smith's hard fall yesterday, while Duke was busy pummeling Local No. 2 Virginia. The first part is here, the second, more exciting part appears below. The background comes from the Winston-Salem Journal
The night took a scary turn with 14:53 left when Nolan Smith, a Duke freshman guard, took a hard fall. Smith had knocked the ball away from Sean Singletary, Virginia's point guard, and made a mad dash after it as it bounced toward the side near midcourt. Smith tripped as he reached the sideline, lost his balance and fell into the scorer's table. He was momentarily stunned, but got up on his own before leaving the game.
He retuned with 12:09 left and showed no ill effects from the fall. Smith laughed and said that he took inspiration from Coach Roy Williams of North Carolina, who tripped and fell headfirst into a door on Friday and needed five stitches to close a scalp wound.
Smith chipped one of his lower front teeth but said that he did not feel that he would need dental repair work. He said he fell because he tripped over the ball.
Well, no need to take his word for it any more. Here's definitive video proof that Nolan Smith did, in fact, trip over the ball. Plus that previously mentioned narration. Man, I hope this guy is a Virginia fan. (And speaking of taking a hard fall, the Atlantic 11 results will appear in a few hours.)
