Seattle Already Raising the Flag

I thought this was the sort of thing that's done in those quaint Midwestern industrial shell cities, the ones with burning rivers and large men wearing sweatpants and mustaches, where the entire city gets behind its sports franchises by naming meat sandwiches after players, holding pep rallies and dressing the mayor in ceremonial team-colored garb. Like in Western New York, our high school cafeteria used to be decorated with "Squish the Fish" posters during Dolphins week. And when I was in Cleveland for the Wizards playoff series last year, there were "Rise Up" banners on downtown skyscrapers and light poles and storefronts.

I figured Seattle was far too cool for such displays. I was wrong. Some mountain climber, Jim Whittaker, a Seattle guy who was the first American to scale Mt. Everest, put a Seahawks' 12th Man flag on top of the Space Needle.

Mike Sellers said yesterday that Seattle must pump noise into its stadium, a charge Mike Holmgren flatly denied during his conference call with reporters. The Seattle Times sez that in the Seahawks past 24 regular season games, opposing teams have committed 68 false-start penalties, by far the most in the league. And as if that weren't enough, now the Redskins also have to deal with 12th Man flags atop local landmarks? Hardly seems fair.

Oh, and lest I forget, tomorrow has been dubbed "Blue Friday," which means that "Fans are encouraged to show their passion and support for the team by wearing Seahawks attire or blue clothing to work and school." And there will be complimentary face painting by the stadium tomorrow, and 12th Man flag-raising contests today. And the Pacific Science Center arches are going blue-green, whatever that means.

Meanwhile, in Washington....um, Redskins Radio seems fired up, anyhow.

With their cultural center in Seattle, and everything else centering around themselves, the disinterested people of Wahington have been too cool to have any nationwide relevance since Kurt Cobain left the state for good in 1994.

"Mike Sellers said yesterday that Seattle must pump noise into its stadium..."

don't the Redskins?

Posted by: Unsilent Majority | January 3, 2008 12:30 PM | Report abuse

Uh huh. Seattle is the city of football-mad fanatics, and DC is muted in its love of the Redskins. That's some hard-core revisionism, Steinz.

The above comments seem par for the course, what with the East's refusal to acknowledge Seattle's recent dominance. Chide us for our team spirit, for our "cornball...displays of fanatacism," but just think: starting Saturday night, you'll enjoy an entire week of Seahawks bashing leading up to our game in Green Bay. And one other thing. Your "momentum" going into the playoffs seems a bit forced, like when a third-string quarterback manages to throw more TD's than INT's. The mojo is ripe to wear off. LOL.

"...Seattle's recent dominance."

what the H are you talking about? oh yea, and that's a nice, challenging division you guys play in. no really. it is, i swear...

"opposing teams have committed 68 false-start penalties"

The 49ers committed 44 false start infractions during that Monday Night game

Posted by: onside kick | January 3, 2008 1:55 PM | Report abuse

Ryno,
Your "head in the sand" analysis of Seattle's recent record (ie, the aforementioned "dominance") is truly AWESOME. Can't wait to read your insights on Saturday night. Prediction: Todd Collins throws one TD and two picks; Portis fumbles at least once; SEA 27 WAS 14.

Posted by: SeaTacHoodRat | January 3, 2008 2:04 PM | Report abuse

dude, your team is 10-6 and plays in the worst division in football. i'm not predicting a Skins rout, but you might want to calm down a bit over there with this "dominance" garbage.

Posted by: Ryno | January 3, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

Be prepared for a HUGE letdown, Redskin fans. This is not a team to take lightly. Most of the nation does not know how good this team really is. SEA 35 WAS 14

Posted by: True Blue Fan | January 3, 2008 2:29 PM | Report abuse

SeaTacHoodRat,

Please. By definition, teams that haven't ever won a Super Bowl can't be "dominant".

The FishBirds may be dominant when playing skells like the Niners and the Cards, but the wheels have come off for Alexander and they have no O-line to speak of. Holmgren just looks like a fat guy ordering off a menu when he calls in plays.

I can't wait to see Fletcher go upside Hasselbeck's bald dome.

True Blue Fan:

Seattle doesn't even know how good their team is or isn't...read your local papers.

Regardless of the outcome of Saturday's game, the Redskins will continue to be a top-three franchise(history, tradition, and championships)in the NFL while Seattle remains...well...Seattle.

The Redskins earned their way into the playoffs playing arguably the leagues toughest schedule...3 teams from the NFC East made the playoffs and the other was .500. On the other hand...

Posted by: Wow | January 3, 2008 3:06 PM | Report abuse

The Seahawks are in the playoffs only because the NFC West must send someone to the party and they were the best of the lot of crappy teams. You all rant and rave about the sound there, but the stadium was clearly built with that advantage in mind. As a franchise the Seahawks are not even above .500 (.492) in the 30 seasons they have been in the league and only have one super bowl appearance. And lest we forget - the Falcons put up how many points this past weekend? 44 sound familiar. What a joke. Beat your chest all you want, your franchise is laughable. And don't get me started on the neon green. Okay, now I am laughing.

What's different now?

We don't have Mark Brunell starting, that's an upgrade right there.

Clinton is on a tear.

We have a much more dependable receiving corps.

The Skins defense is playing downright scary football right now.

Ask around the league, nobody wants to play the Skins right now. Everybody else in the NFC is rooting for the Seahawks because they don't want to take the Skins on. ESPECIALLY the Cowboys.

It goes without mentioning, but Alexander has been more or less worthless this year, as others have said, your line is reeling, and who do you have at receiver? Honestly, I have NO idea.

So nice to see how everyone from D.C feels about Seattle. Things going that well in DC the last eight and 17 years respectively? Out here in South East Alaska we love our Hawks and are used to the bashing we always get from the media on the EAST COAST. I'm sure when Qwest Field registers as a earthquake due to noise after what your Sellers said you'll blame it on being hopped up on Ocho shot lattes. Dan we've been doing this Blue Friday thing every weekend we've had a game the past five years. Something to get excited about because unlike D.C where you don't go outside due to crime, its always raining here.
Hawks 28, Skins 17
P.S. Relevantly we have a few companies you might have heard of ODW: Starbucks, Boeing, Costco, Amazon, and this little one called Microsoft. So I guess your right, nothing relevant comes from Seattle, were just lumberjacks and fishermen that wear blue,

Posted by: HawksFan31 | January 3, 2008 7:01 PM | Report abuse

One could argue that the NFC playoffs would be better served if the Eagles were in and the Seahags were out.

'Skins fans, I'm sorry about ST, and I'm glad your season picked up of late. You deserve it after that kind of start to the year. However, our boys are going to bring a noisy end to your season tomorrow. So bring your knitting & crossword puzzle books with you. Skin fans, excuse ref hater, and get real. We have NASCAR fans out here too! Just because we can't use Federal money to get stuff built doesn't mean we aren't real people.

Its fun hearing all the "National" Media picking the skins to win though. It'll make the victory that much more sweet. I'm glad #21 isn't playing, at least I know our beloved Seahawks won't be getting hit late or spit on by him. By the way, a geto puck is a misspelled version of "Ghetto Puck". Which is a scum bag from a bad environment who has to deal with normal people.

We have some of those up here too. But that's okay. Because they like our rain. More than your team will.

I'm glad we have the #12 flag, because it gives the announcers one thing to talk about regarding that isn't Sean Taylor.

did you know Jerome Bettis is from Detroit?

First of all, don't let a couple of idiots (Skins Suck & Ref Hater) get your knickers in a knot. Unfortunately there's always one or two in every crowd suffering from serious mental obstipation*. Your team's loss was felt by anyone who truly is a sports fan.

That being said, what a self-aggrandizing* group you Skins fans are. Before you take all of your self-patronizing*, puffed-up*, overweening* to seriously, a little history from the past 5 regular and post seasons:

REGULAR SEASON WON/LOSS
Wash. 35/45 (.4375%) ... Sea. 51/29 (.6475%)

COMMON OPPONENTS
Wash. 11/11 (.500%) ... Sea. 23/3 (.885%)

DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS
Wash. 0 ... Sea. 4

WILDCARD
Wash. 2 (3rd place x2) ... Sea. 1 (2nd place)

POST SEASONS
Wash. 2 ... Sea. 5

POST SEASON GAMES = EXPERINCE
Wash. 2 ... Sea. 7

Since you don't believe that fans can have any impact on the outcome of a game it's too bad that, unlike the Seahawks #12, you won't be able to help your Skins.

Have fun and may the best team win.

GO HAWKS!!!

I sure hope that at some point, Redskins fans will allow Sean Taylor to rest in peace. His death was a tragedy. It should not be marred by using it as a tool to amp people up for a football game.

Posted by: antediluvian | January 4, 2008 4:37 PM | Report abuse

I've always wondered what kind of people were actually Redskins fans and now I've found a blog where there are several species. Seems like a disdain for the facts is a key commonality.

I think Seasoned Hawk brought the stats on like the Hawks D is going to bring the sack on.

Keep up the informative blog posts!

I think that old Danny Boy secretly is a big Seattle Fan, he just isn't ready to come out of the closet yet.

Posted by: Hawk Fan | January 4, 2008 5:04 PM | Report abuse

Okay so I must say that I have been pretty impressed with the Redskins run lately, in fact it has been a great story to see them rally behind a fallen teammate. But for everyone who thinks the DC will win isn't looking at actually football matchups. So without futher ado lets look.

During the last 4 games the redskins have played a lot in fact mostly cover 1, which has worked great because against the Bears, Vikings, and Giants (teams that both depend on the run game) they have played mostly with only 3 DB's allowing them to have a extra LB or DL in the game and win they did play with 2 safety's usually 1 of them was in the box, why because none of hose teams could spread you out.

So now they play the Hawks who don't care if they run (although since making a blocking scheme change they have run for over 300 yards in their last 2 games) but will spread the Defense out with 4 wr sets. So that leaves the redskins with a desicion do they go back to playing a lot of cover 3 like they did against the Pats and GB (which they got burned) or do they stick with what is working a play cover 1 and blitz. I bet they keep playing cover 1 and blitz. But now they have their #3 CB covering Engram who had 94 catches for 1157 yards this season with no help.

I'm not sure how anyone could like that matchup.

Posted by: Ballgame | January 4, 2008 5:14 PM | Report abuse

Seattle's 12th man will be out in force, as usual, and are hoping for a great game from the Redskins. It's nice to see your city has taken a tragedy and used it as a reason to rally behind your team. I'm disappointed however to see this blogger stooped to attacking another city's abundance of team spirit. It reeks of jealousy. This type of public reaction however only fuels our spirit even more. See you at Qwest field! Should be an awesome game.

Posted by: justanotherhawkfan | January 4, 2008 6:26 PM | Report abuse

Good points laid about offenses. I will credit the Skins for having a very good defense. Probably the best defense to come into Qwest Field this year (apologies to the Ravens and Cardinals). If the Hawks can have some balance, just by being able to run the ball against a 7 man front, they're in business to do some special things. If they can't, they'll have to deal with a tough day.

I think they'll be able to run it enough to keep the Skins honest. Its tough to stop a decent running game with only 7. the Hawks have shown they can be decent, maybe even good at running the ball. Shaun Alexander looks like he's as healthy as he's been all year. Add to that I actually saw him use his broken wrist to fend off a tackler last week. First time since the injury he's done that.

ON the other side of the ball, I'm afraid the Hawks will rise to the occasion. Sorry Skins fans. But the Hawks D is probably a top 5 Defense when playing at home. And the Skins offense is not the best we've seen here, sorry.

One more apology. Sorry for taking over this blog.

Who cares about this Sean Taylor guy? I mean move on tards.

Posted by: gary | January 4, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

let me state; out of the both teams coming into this game a Qwest Seattle has the slight advantages is Qb Play, WR Play, O-line play is a push (redskins have a little better run O-line but i think Seattle has the edge in pass protecting, I would give the edge to the Redskins in RB and TE. On Defense Seattle has the edge on D-Line Play, LB Play and secondary hencing 15tds thrown against us all season special teams very slight edge to seattle with a slight edge to redskins on punting. the real advantage on the contrary to Mr. Sellers is the srtength and noise of the 12th man. granted has had a good run (credit where credit is due) but runs come to an end and playing in the biggest game if his career with the pressure and blitz packages coming at him and the loudest place to play in the NFL i have a feeling he may get rattled and make a few key turnovers which will seal the fate for the redskins i believe it will be near end of the 2nd quarter when trying to rush a play to squeeze out a few points before the half which will turn into 7 or 3 for the hawks and extend our lead and then again trying to get the game close middle of the 4th quarter we he realizes time is running out and again that will lead to hawks points and a 2 possesion game the skins will score near the end of the 4th quarter to bring it close again but just a little much to late. hawks win 31-27
PS the game will be close but the gifts from a rattled Collins will aid us into moving on to Green Bay. All in all this will be the best game of the weekend. fyi all the mumbo jumbo of stats last year, 2yrs ago 5yrs ago. these teams statistically this year doesnt mean a damn thing......the only thing that Matters is Saturday and preperatition

In review

X-Factors - Redskins QB Collins if he does managed to avoid my predectitions they have a very good chance of winning.

X-Factors - 12th Man and second we need to find a way to keep the very stought Redskins run D honest and on their heels enabling us to run for 100yds we do this and we win. we know Matt is going to throw the ball

I am a hawks fan predecctiting a win but with respect and my honest view of the game. if we lose i will back here right after the game wishing the skins luck against dallas......
