Tonight's UVA Cheer Sheet

The cheer sheet suggests this guy looks like Seth Greenberg, or vice versa.

With Local No. 2 Virginia set to face Local No. 5 Virginia Tech tonight, the Hoo Crew has already sent out its cheer sheet (sorry, its "Hype Sheet"), which was forwarded on by a tipster. Almost a year ago I published some highlights from a UVA-Duke cheer sheet, which were bad; it seems the Hoo Crew has made some improvements since then.

Headline: Ron Mexico's All-Stars at Virginia

Summary: THE VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES enter tonight's game with a record of 10-6, coming off a 1-point win over Maryland. Tech is undoubtedly the best agricultural research university in the state of Virginia. It is much further down the list in basketball, however, having lost to Old Dominion and Richmond. We all know this is a rivalry game, so let's make JPJ as loud and hostile as possible. Remember to keep sportsmanship in mind though, and don't be too hard on the Tech players. They have to go home to Blacksburg after the game.

Suggested Cheers: "Stick to Farming"

"Bad Newz Kennels"

"Safety School"

"What's a Hokie?"

"Stuff the Turkey"

"Longwood Rejects"

"NIT"

"This is Our State"

When We Shoot Free Throws: Start with your hands in the air. When the UVA player makes the free throw: "HOOS! U - V - A!" EXCEPTION: When Sean is shooting, hold up 4s on each hand.

When They Shoot Free Throws: Everyone start with your arms to the left, and move them to the right as the player takes the shot. Make sure there is a swell of noise right as the player shoots. Timing is everything on these.

Cheers for Hoos: MAMADI DIANE, "Hoos Your Mamadi"

ADRIAN JOSEPH, "Yo, Adrian"

MIKE SCOTT, "That's What She Said"

CALVIN BAKER, "Shake 'N' Bake"

TUNJI SOROYE, "Soroye the Destroyé"

ANDY BURNS,"Let it Burn"

SOLOMON TAT, "King Solomon"

Hokies Fun Facts: AD VASSALLO, Real first name is "Angel"

JEFF ALLEN, Was at one time rated the #1 prep player in the country...yet chose to attend Virginia Tech.

DERON WASHINGTON, One of two Tech players to stomp on an opponent on national TV. The other? Marcus Vick.

CHEICK DIAKITE, His name is Cheick Diakite.

Why does Longwood have to be dragged into this?

Posted by: ScottVanPeltStyle.com | January 16, 2008 10:50 AM | Report abuse

I'd expect more from UVA students, these these cheers are lame and lacking any wit. Check that, this is exactly what should be expected from UVA students.

You know, when you see things like this written down, it just seems pretty lame and unfunny.

Posted by: sjf | January 16, 2008 11:22 AM | Report abuse

If you can't think of your own cheers and have to rely on a cheer sheet, you ain't a fan.

Posted by: ejt | January 16, 2008 11:25 AM | Report abuse

These are ok, when you start trying to keep sportsmanship into it, what you can say is pretty limited.

The stick to farming one is pretty funny, and the longwood comment is too. The rest need work.

The university ruined the football game with all of its sportsmanship crap.

The last time I entered JPJ, I was told, "Stick to Blogging."

Posted by: WaPoLiveFan16 | January 16, 2008 11:49 AM | Report abuse

That list is beyond pathetic. It's one thing to be clever (none of those are), but to copy the style of the dorks at Dook yet come up with nothing amusing is just sad.

Posted by: Markus V. | January 16, 2008 11:50 AM | Report abuse

so terrible...seriously, if you go or went to uva you should be embaressed

Posted by: laughing at hoos | January 16, 2008 12:28 PM | Report abuse

Wow. I didn't think it was possible to be lamer than Dook's cheer sheet, but here we are.

Posted by: Paul | January 16, 2008 12:29 PM | Report abuse

Pathetic. Simply pathetic.

Posted by: Tim | January 16, 2008 12:59 PM | Report abuse

I blame ESPN for the proliferation of cheer sheets.

Posted by: indy | January 16, 2008 1:01 PM | Report abuse

Seriously, if you wrote "seriously, if you go or went to uva you should be embaressed", you should be using FireFox, it comes with a built-in spell checker which would save you from your own embarrassment (see, spelling comes naturally) and from being the embarrassment of whatever technical college you graduated from.

Posted by: Laughing at You | January 16, 2008 1:20 PM | Report abuse

did it ever occur to anybody else that students also think that these things are lame and uncreative? we're embarassed by them too. it's not like we actually say these chants or do anything mentioned on them when they are passed out at the games. it's just wasteful creation of paper trash.

Posted by: perfect10hoo | January 16, 2008 1:38 PM | Report abuse

That was pretty pathetic. I wanted to make jokes and tease Hoos for this, but it isn't worth it. Unless you're a brainwashed Duke fan, I don't expect any individual or group of fans to like cheer sheets although there is always that one person who wants them. I suppose this is better than carving a VT into the court again. Why bring Longwood into this though? What did they do? Please do chant "NIT." That could be inspiration. It's post-season play and it isn't that other tournament. Also, as the two Maryland fans at the last Tech game found, Tech players do better from the charity stripe when there is noise and distractions like when they are on the road. Try not to get in trouble with the reflectors though. Since the Vicks still attend and represents VT basketball, those are still relevant. Also, the conventional answer to what is a Hokie is answered in the media guide.

I appreciate the effort, but the execution ain't there.

The kids in C'vill can be funny at times, though:

This is just embarrassing. UVA fans are becoming more of a laughing stock every day.

I know it's just joking around, but making fun of the agricultural nature of VT is not only elitist, but it makes you sound ignorant at the same time. By the way, Charlottesville isn't exactly downtown Manhattan either.

And I wouldn't be chanting "NIT!" in a making way, UVA fan. The NIT is a very very realistic postseason destination for your team too.

What rhymes with "Thank God we're not playing Xavier tonight"?

so terrible...seriously, if you go or went to uva you should be embaressed

Posted by: laughing at hoos | January 16, 2008 12:28 PM

embaressed or embarrassed?

the stupid cheer sheet doesn't mean anything. i guess everyone loves pilling on number one when they get a chance. now i know how the pats feel ;)

Posted by: hooray | January 16, 2008 3:49 PM | Report abuse

Haha...the hoos are jealous of their better looking twin VT...so stupid, its not even funny. UVA...get over yourself and I'll continue to say that until I see a VT one..

Go Orangemen!

As a UVA alum and Longwood faculty member, I am sorry to see the Hoo Crew feels a need to draw Longwood into the fray.

I'm glad to see that the Hoo Crew has apparently improved since Steinberg's post on the UVA-DOOK cheer sheet, and instructions on when to clap during the cheers are no longer needed.

In fairness, the current Hoos have not always been unkind to Longwood, as this editorial from the Cavalier Daily reveals . . .

Which is worse a farmer or an unemployed man with a degree in Shakespearean English?

" is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

How is this "pilling on number one"? Number one in what?

Does this cheer sheet come with a blazer, or are you expected to bring your own?

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | January 16, 2008 4:44 PM | Report abuse

Lame cheer sheet, but seriously Chokies- who let you scrubs into the ACC?

Posted by: GeauxHoos | January 16, 2008 4:46 PM | Report abuse

No blazer, but it does come with a full set of false teeth should you choose to change allegiances during your beat-down.

The whole state of virginia is lame, no one takes uva or vt's basketball programs seriously. everyone from that state is a redneck some of them just have their great grandfathers old money to lay on. get over yourself state of virginia, the whole state has not done anything relevant since the Madison administration.

"Lame cheer sheet, but seriously Chokies- who let you scrubs into the ACC?"

Umm, you did.

We were brought in to toughen up the nerd-abundant ACC. Alas, I feel it is an uphill battle, seeing as how every ACC fanbase still whines incessantly about academic standards and other weak excuses after a loss.

what the hell happened to this blog? what are all these people doing here?

Posted by: pack4life | January 16, 2008 6:31 PM | Report abuse

Yea, pretty lame for some of those calls.
However, even more lame to bash a community of fans who are trying to coordinate their efforts in order to further support their team during a rivalry game.

Seriously, What do Cheerleaders do again? Oh... yea. EXACTLY the same thing... only they get to practice it.

I have always been a fan of "TECH SUCKS" but that's just me.

Also IF ANY Hokie has something to say, i point you to the AD Plane that flew over the gator bowl. You think coordinating cheers is lame, how about spending tons of money to fly a banner over a bowl game that you aren't even playing in.

Perhaps a "V.A. PRIDE" chant should be inorder tonight.

So, I guess that cheer sheet really worked, eh?
Must've been the pre-game tea and crumpets...

Posted by: Thomas Jefferson | January 16, 2008 10:58 PM | Report abuse

I like the generalizations that everyone makes saying that UVA students are lame for using the sheets. If you've ever been to a game you'd realize that they've never been used before and it boggles my mind why they're even still made.

It's essentially a few students who have standing in the organization that make it, most students hate it and could care less.

Personally I think the fun facts are all that's needed. Giving a brief background on players can be useful. Dan I don't know what your infatuation with them is though.

Posted by: Anonymous | January 17, 2008 12:14 AM | Report abuse

Virginia is lame true.
It's definitely more exciting to live in Baltimore or Washington...you have a 90% chance of getting shot or robbed tonight. It's kind of like playing Grand Theft Auto...GTA 5:Charm City.

All you idiots at UMBC(CC) and UMES(CC) try to get into VT...

No one takes VT or UVA basketball seriously except for Gary Williams over at Garyland. What a joke of a program! you win a national championship and a few years later you are getting beat by those hicks in Virginia. Oh and don't forget those CAA teams in Virginia either...Guess VCU and ODU are pretty terrible as well. George Mason is also pretty terrible, you may remember how short that stint in the final four a few years ago was. Oh and remember that time VCU knocked off Dook in the NCAA tournament?

VT, UVA, ODU, GMU, & VCU are all, with the exception of UVA, better than UMD.

SHUT UP!

Oh if anyone wants to have a non-hatred based conversation with me, lets talk pro sports cause eh Baltimore is my city. Of course this is the post so you'd probably rather tell me how next year is the Redskins' year.
Go Ravens! Fire Angelos!

Anonymous, part of the reason Mr. Steinbog brings them up is because it generates hits and discussion. I think most here understand that it is just a few kids who like it and most students don't. Plus, most of the time it doesn't get that loud in the new arena. It's not quite the drop off from Cole to Comcast, but University Hall to JPJ is more sterile. I'm not sure if it is the arena or the current condition of UVa athletics that fans are dissatisfied with though.
Be careful when you say Virginia is safe. Let's not forget a future Maryland player from DC chose to play in College Park because Blacksburg is too dangerous....

Hey Pack4life, you might try reading the Millwaukee Register's blog, or perhaps the Raleigh Gazette for topics more relevent to yourself.

I think the UVa-VT rivalry in all sports is ready to explode; VT is really picking UVa's scabs lately and this win in C'Ville (in recently Money mag's #1 city to live in, Ryan, and B'Burg is a hole) only makes it worse. The more competitive they get in non-football sports the more heated it will be.

Posted by: jj | January 17, 2008 10:11 AM | Report abuse

I have a cheer for UVa. Scoreboard!
