Franco Niell is Short

(Photos courtesy D.C. United)

Remember how Franco Niell, he of the 5-foot-4 listed roster height, has that tattoo of a troll playing soccer on his calf? The point being that he's, you know, short? Well, this photo illustrates that a lot better than the tattoo. My goodness, Tim Duncan makes him look like a middle schooler. A very hairy middle schooler, but still.

United's three new Argentine acquisitions hung out with the Spurs and their Argentine stars last night, presumably chatting about how much cooler the Washington Wizards are than the Kansas City Wizards, even though those franchise's fans share an utter aversion to noisemaking and merriment. And if any of that Duncan anti-blog matter seeps off onto the new acquisitions, I'll be quite irritated.

Harsh, but fair

Franco Niell has scored on 3 headers for DC United in preseason, despite being generously listed at 5'4".

I submit that we have our very own Muggsy Bogues in our midst.

Height...or lack thereof...is a weapon. I can't wait to see what this guy can do.

Between Niell and Peralta, I think our roster encompasses the average height of everyone in the US (or, rather, Argentina).

The platform (or steps) that Niell and Gallardo are standing on in the second photo must be over a foot tall.

I like that you can see Niell's knees in that second photo.

=====

DC got their team built about as early in the off-season as you can expect. Planty of other teams in the East (Toronto, RBNY, New England, Kansas City) are still without major chunks of their lineup.

I agree that DC will likely not start out with a bang. But they did not last season either (3 losses in their first four games) and still went on to have the best record in the league.

This season ... I think DC has a chance to be as good as ever. Even a lot of their bench players look like they can make a contribution (when is the last time the team had dangerous 3rd and 4th forwards) and there is a lot of skill all over the field.
