D.C. United Makes Cuts
Within the last 12 months, I've filmed Caps defenseman Mike Green as he got his mohawk shaved, talked with Caron Butler about his own head-shaving designs, stopped Marcus Pollard in a back hallway to take photos of his logo head, helped land Alex Ovechkin a sponsorship deal with the Hair Cuttery and talked with D.C. United midfielder/barber Dan Stratford about his hair-cutting skills. If anyone in this town has written more about the intersection between sports and haircuts, I want to meet that intrepid soul.
Which is why I was so pleased to get this note from actual hairdresser and D.C. United season-ticket holder Karen Hennessee, who works at Salon Enclave in Springfield. She had read the Stratford barber item, and had some thoughts:
I would love to be the official (or unofficial) hairdresser for the team. I know I am better than Stratford. I always felt it was a silly thing, but now that I see you reporting on it I know it's a Serious Issue. Do you think they are looking? And you know people always give the dirt to their hairdresser, so maybe we could work out an information exchange? What do you think?
I know, crazy, right? What kind of question is that? I mean, obviously I think it's a perfect idea, duh. Two weeks later, I'm in the bowels of RFK, listening to loud Latin music booming from the weight room and awaiting the start of D.C. United Haircut-Off '08, a truly bizarre event in which Karen H. will cut the hair of United's Dane Murphy and Jeremy Barlow, Stratford will cut the hair of his teammates Zach Wells and Pat Carroll, and then....well, I'm not sure exactly what happens next. Cheap aftershave and white barber shop powder, I guess.
Regardless, check back soon for results from the latest major hair event to wash over the D.C. sports landscape, and if you have any interest in becoming D.C. United's Official Team Furrier, Official Team Vintner, Official Team Cobbler or Official Team Maître Fromager, please do let me know.
