GW's New George Washington Mascot

New Little George. (Photo ripped from The Hatchet's Ryder Haske)

As if the new, fiercer Jack the Bulldog mascot at Georgetown wasn't spice enough for our local cadre of furry friends, comes now a new and more intimidating "Little George" costume, depicting the father of our country as a jovial neighborhood bully with fire in his eyes, a sly grin on his lips and creases in his brow. Reports the GW Hatchet:

After cheering on GW's athletic teams for 20 years, the University put its aging mascot to rest this summer and introduced the modern and more aggressive "George" to incoming freshmen during the first Colonial Inauguration session.

"We want him to look intimidating, not old and creaky," said Nicole Macchione-Early, Spirit Program director.

The new George sports a new tri-corner hat, a furrowed brow, and a confident, heated demeanor. His head and hair are made of felt, a stark contrast from Little George's papier-mâché casting. It is the first complete replacement in 20 years, though Little George received annual repainting and cleaning.

Old Little George.

I mean, any mascot who needs to be repainted every year is clearly in some degree of distress. And the old Little George, truth be told, seemed like a fading dandy who perhaps had downed a few too many slugs of brandy back in the library while reading Locke and Hobbes (and Hobbs, I guess) and warding off the ague. He always seemed vaguely lech. GW's venerable VP of Stuff Robert Chernak, compared the departed Little George to Estelle Getty from "The Golden Girls," according to the Hatchet, which has to be an insult to our first president, the DAR, every current and former GW student and Estelle Getty.

(It should be pointed out that, the Hatchet reported, a blog helped do Old Little George in.)

Regardless, with Gunston's future still in the news and Jack and Little George now fully refreshed, it's clearly time for a "fiercest college mascot in D.C." competition. Next week, children, next week.

Colin Cowherd approves - all "Little Georges" are not created equal.

The new one looks like an Asian chick with her hair bleached and wearing a Colonial Anime costume (if such a genre existed). With all due respect to Asian chicks, I'm not sure this is ratcheting up the intimidation factor.

Sam the Minuteman says, "Been there, done that."

Why is the Minuteman mascot gray?

It looks like he's been dead for about 12 years. Oh wait, he has.

At least George is GW's true mascot and has been for years. The bulldog mascot for the hoyas was stolen by GU from Georgia (UGa.)
