El Muneco's Likeness
Maybe you've seen this Screaming Eagles sign paying homage to Marcelo Gallardo, aka El Muneco, which is variously translated as "The Doll," "The Puppet," or "any doll bearing the likeness of a young boy."
I showed this photo to several of Gallardo's teammates on Sunday.
"That's not very flattering, is it?" Ben Olsen said.
"He looks like Marcelo!" Gonzalo Peralta said.
"Oh my God," Fred said. "Damn! Looks like him."
As for Gallardo, he had seen the banner before, even autographing it, and he laughed when shown the image.
"I'm a good character, I'm not as fierce looking as that one is," he said through an interpreter.
Why is he called El Muneco? Some sites say it's because of his doll-like proportions, but he said it's because he broke into professional soccer at the age of 15 or 16.
"And I had a little baby face, like a doll, so from then on they just started calling me that," he said. I asked whether the name carried some implication of mischief or evil-doing, as with Chucky.
"No, no, no, no, no, no, no," he said. "After that, they started comparing me with all dolls around the world. Any doll that I ever saw, any doll that ever became popular at the time, they started comparing me....[The poster is of] a bad Chucky doll, but I'm not bad. I'm ok with that, but I'm actually a good person inside."
As for the not-yet-complete homage to Clyde Simms, "It's close," said Simms, who said he had never before seen a portrait of himself in the stands. "It's much better than I would have guessed if someone would have told me, for sure."
