Suisham's 110-Yarder and Football Fans

By now you've no doubt seen the Shaun Suisham 110-yard "field goal" whose presence has burned up the Internet like sun on a bare-shirted Barra Brava chest. Literally more than a million hundreds of thousands of people have viewed this in the past few days, and a few of them appear actually to be sentient beings. A few additional details:

* The video was done by the marketing department at WUSA-9, and was made to promote the Redskins' preseason games, which are shown on WUSA's air. "I think it was meant in the spirit of summer fun," said WUSA sports director Brett Haber, whose division had nothing to do with the spot. Of course, the YouTube version seems to have purged the WUSA promo, which kind of defeats the purpose.

* Is it real? "Yes," Haber said. "So is the Easter Bunny."

* The WUSA marketing department was flooded by a "voluminous" amount of e-mails, with approximately 30 percent of the e-mailers evidently believing the kick was fo' real. "Which is frightening," Haber pointed out. "Draw whatever conclusions you want from that."

* While the news department was independent of this marketing promotion, Haber will address the video during tonight's 11 pm newscast, and will also announce a "making of" clip that will appear on the WUSA Web site.

* Your official mythbusting moment: with about two seconds left in the clip, as the camera follows the football down and the ground comes back into view, you can see a football lying there on the ground. That was apparently the first football that Suisham kicked, post-bounce. You'll note that it didn't quite make it 110 yards.

Suisham, how about making a 30 yard field goal in the playoffs against Seattle?

Well, this certainly is an exciting moment for them--oh, wait, it isn't real? So sorry.
