Gilbert's Million-Dollar Pool: The Pics

UPDATED: These are confirmed as being photos of Gilbert's pool. And, retroactively, he told the Wizards he was ok with them appearing on my blog. More importantly, it's crucial to note that this is far from the finished product, that it will eventually look MUCH more impressive, that the project is already far past the point pictured here, and that finished-product pics will be available eventually. So this is just a taste.

Just in case the trio of Fred Smoot, Chris Knoche and Steve Czaban weren't reliable enough sources on the fabulousness of Gilbert Arenas's million-dollar pool, which Czaban claimed will be one of the largest residential pools in America, I bring you alleged pics of said pool, courtesy of a regular Bog reader and diehard Wizards fan who recently visited the work site with one of the crews.

The reader provides some facts, which he gleaned from one of the contractors:

* The stone for the "mountain" cost nearly half a million dollars.

* There are three different fish tanks, one going in the "grotto," one in the front hall, and one in the basement. Their normal retail price would have been about another half-million.

* The tank in the basement will have a recess with a couch in it so Gil can "relax and look up at the fish."

* The work is scheduled to be finished in August.

No word on whether the pool is big enough to host a Fred Smoot-sponsored cruise, but it's gotta be pretty close.

Anyone else think that posting these pics is an invasion of privacy? Did Arenas give you permission to post them?

Posted by: Arlington VA | July 29, 2008 12:52 PM | Report abuse

I heard the workers had to come back and re-fill the pool with water after Wizards equipment manager Rob Suller did his infamous cannonball trick.

Posted by: YKH | July 29, 2008 1:10 PM | Report abuse

I think it is an invasion of privacy to post the pictures too! Especially since it wasn't Gil who sent them to this blog. But hey, that is the world we live in. Nothing it appears is off limits if you are in the public eye.

Damn, it's not like he can get alot of use out of that. This is the eastcoast where we have more colder months. that pool belongs in FL or somewhere in AZ.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 29, 2008 1:54 PM | Report abuse

When he post his next blog this will be a link for him to show off his pool, he said back in Nov that he would post pics of his Hugh Hefner style pool, without the bunnies. believe me.. Gil will have some bunnies in there... that pool isn't built for toddler's to play up in there.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 29, 2008 2:02 PM | Report abuse

The mountain looks like a blast! Any idea how deep the pool is around Mt Gil? Maybe not very kid friendly, but as a kid I was always looking for the highest, sketchiest place to climb up to and JUMP! Who wasn't?
As for not getting use, what do you think Gil's gonna be doing in the Summer once it's all done?
I'd be swimming in that thing twice a day, grilling steaks and doing flips off the Rock.

Posted by: Dadryan | July 29, 2008 2:03 PM | Report abuse

Man Gil you did it all the way BIG with this one here. Can't wait till you have a pool party. If it is half as big as your 25th b-day celebration I know this will be nice. Enjoy your riches black man!!

Posted by: Anonymous | July 29, 2008 2:10 PM | Report abuse

No way, the pool is not that deep to be jumping of the cliff. Thats how DJ Swift from 92Q died last week, she broke her neck diving into the swallow end of her pool.

I immediately had the same thought. Not sure that's Stein's problem, since once the photos are given to him he can use them, but I imagine that whoever the contractor was who allowed them to be taken might want to check with a lawyer . . .

Posted by: Andy | July 29, 2008 2:38 PM | Report abuse

If you're going to spend that kind of cheddar on a pool, at least make it attractive. I say send him a subscription to Architectural Digest so he can learn from people with money how to spend it tastefully.

Yeah I'm a little curious myself what rights the Washington Post has to post photos taken INSIDE someone's property without their permission?

I mean they are cool pictures, but...doesn't this cross a line? The person who posted the photos likely has no right to post them online, nor give them to the media. And the contractor who allowed them to do so would surely not get my business.

Posted by: Dave | July 29, 2008 4:33 PM | Report abuse

wow, his pool is nice but yeah, hope he doesnt get upset of them posted online and all. He did say it would be better than Hugh Hefner's (on his blog) so perhaps he's not really too phased either way. One thing Gil doesnt spend a lot of money on "bling" and stuff like that. I notice he doesnt wear jewlery like that and armani suits and all that designer high price looking stuff. so he puts his money like that toward his pool. Plus, i'm thinking Gil has the sense to invest well, vitamin water and all.

Posted by: washwiz | July 29, 2008 6:02 PM | Report abuse

Wow there had to be an update - that's crazy! I'm confident that you read your comments Dan, so I just wanna say this: at first you had to grow on me; that took some months, because I thought that you were one of those white-collared a*shole (excuse my French) d.c. journalist - much like ball players have their assumptions about Milwaukee (ok, I've been trying to get over what was said about Milwaukee for days now) - much like I would never ever want to move to a superficial city like LA...I'm sure you're probably getting the point by now. But as I started reading more of your sports "bog," I can't guarantee that you're not an a*shole, but what I can guarantee is that I like what I read; like I wrote once before - you make things, even boring things, more interesting to read. With this all being said, I hope that you keep up the great journalism!

Privacy is an UNDERSTATEMENT with a new-found contract and being a franchise player and all...unless, you're someone like Bill Gates (who puts the "low" in front of key ~low-key~)

It's a safety requirement to surround a swimming pool with some type of fence. Do you think a wealthy celebrity athlete like Arenas should have gone with chain link?

With all of the people in this world that are starving this man spends a million dollars on a pool. How stupid can you be, personally I think thats slave mentality. How often is this man going to be home to even swim in this pool. Does his kids have a college fund set up? Did he build a community center or something cause that MILLION dollars could go along way and not just 9ft deep.

If your boss offered to pay you that much, i'm sure you would take it. I hope he does some community good-will as well, but as far as the pool goes, i would have one if i had the bucks. Isn't it a bit silly to pay someone $100 million dollars to play a sport but pay Teachers, along with other people who do jobs that make us better, smarter, safer etc., salaries that a quarterback would laugh at if offered the same amount to do his "job". Yes they put their bodies on the line and are amazing people(some of them), but isn't a person who can construct a house that is safe enough for your children to live in just as amazing? Can you build a house? Would you work sun up to sun down to do a job that barely pays the bills? Would they play their sports from sun up to sun down for the millions they get now? I doubt it. People want autographs from sports figures but don't care about the doctor at the hospital saving lives. They don't think about how special someone is who puts their life on the line to protect our country or someone who spends an entire lifetime teaching our future leaders and sports figures for little more than a few thanks here and there. People do know the stats of their favorite player from birth, though!! KINDA BACKWARDS IF YOU ASK ME, BUT THEN AGAIN YOUR NOT BECAUSE I DONT PLAY SPORTS. Let's give the MVP of the next NBA playoffs a whole state to build himself a Man-Cave. He deserves it, he put the ball in the hoop, and he even did it in overtime to win!! He played overtime and still shot the ball well, AMAZING!

I guess it's ok these days for our children's role models to be thugs, huh, true.
The NBA is sickening, a bunch of uneducated criminals showboating and running their mouths in interviews like some gang banger. It's a shame that people hold these street thugs in high respect. Let's face it, if most of the NBA players weren't playing basketball, they'd be snatching chains in clubs. And if you're offended, good, that's what I was going for. NBA SUCKS RAP SUCKS HIP HOP SUCKS. AND YOU PEOPLE THINK A WAR IN IRAQ IS THE PROBLEM!!!!!! The biggest problem is what influences our children. I mean...please...A dude in a gangster suit next to a pit bull in front of the white house. Sounds like a thug to me.

All you haters asking whether he has helped his neighbourhood, saved Sudan, patched the holes in the Great Wall, that he is wasting his money, etc... It is HIS money, let him spend as he wishes - If you make $100 thousand, and build a $10,000 pool, are you wasting your money? Extrapolate!! I wonder what percentage of YOUR money goes to worthy causes. Talk to the Man in the mirror first...

Putting money into schools is called politics.

To be a superstar you need to be born and bred a superstar.

Congratulations to Fifth Grader Matt Davis from Thomas Hardy Elementary School for the prize winning mural. Matt will reproduce the work in the grotto area of Mr. Gilbert Arenas's pool. While the original sketch was done in crayon, Matt will change his medium to the "air brush" variety. According to Matt "the air brush allows for finer detail work on the diamond collar on the pitt bull." In reward for his efforts Mr. Areana will donate a brand new set of "DUB's" to the schools bus garage. "It's a win-win situation for me and the community" said Arena. No word as to which bus will be rollin' on 20's yet.

Thank you, Lady B.. That was my point. The minority makes the majority look bad. Media portrays blacks as pit bull fighting thugs, especially NBA players, and because this is the way they are portrayed, a minority of them engages this type of behavior. Unfortunately, those are the ones you hear about and the ones who end up being role models for our children. But the whole point is that the NBA is an outlet for the media to make African Americans, all of them, appear as thugs. After all, that is how they are portrayed in all media, movies, television and music. What we need is truth, morality and respect for our children.

I am in the millitary. I dont do it for money. My mother was a teacher. She didnt do it for the money. Your everyday techers and workers ( the ones you call from sun up to sun down) sit back and watch these people play. It is entertainment. They sit and watch and pay, instead of spending their freetime "making money", which is okay.

I really just want to say no comment.

But here i am.....

So i am just hitting the music aspects and your nba views.

So you think it sucks... you are entitled to your opinion. but i wouldnt suggest you say that to the other couple hundred million to billion people who watch sports in general.

Hip hop and rap sucks? What are you the all knowing entertainment professor. I have listened to more music genres than you have probably heard of and hip hop is way less offensive.. I mean even country and metal can be offensive at times. I dont know what kind of hip hop or rap you claim you listen to but thats not what hip hop is about. i think there may be a little more to it than just what comes from the NBA or Rap.

Perhaps racial preferences, prejudice or jealousy?

All just suggestions.

I'm not a basketball fan but I don't care what they make or what they buy with what they make. I do however wish that they only made positive role models for our future leaders. To finish my comment, I can not believe so many people have nothing better to do than to comment so nastily on things that really do not affect them anyway. If you do not like the NBA, try the NIV (Bible, that is). It's a great way to pass the time that God gave you. And you might actually learn something helpful, like where you and your loved ones may spend eternity. Smoking or non?

Patski, McHammer went broke because he didnt keep track of his money and payed his friends to come around with him and play barber. you can really go broke when you have a hundred people working for you on a salary and they arent making you any money.

Dan dont start with that deserving crap. For the players its not about the team and thier statistics. its about what the team and what they are willing to pay. There arent very many people with the skills who just want to play for the sport any more.

Posted by: Khree | July 30, 2008 2:19 PM | Report abuse

Actually, Khree, if you scroll down, you'll see my point. It's not about entertainment, but influence. And I have listened to plently of rap. Of the 160 GB of music on my hard drive, 65 GB is rap, the rest....blues, jazz, motown, classic rock, classical, standards....Basically, I do know my music and rap is offensive. Claiming it is not is just an attempt to defend what you like. For that matter, the NBA is offensive, too. The last thing I want my kids watching is some spoiled brat whining about how he lost and how it is the fault of his team. Just because it's the majority doesn't mean it's not what we see most often, because it is. To deny that such things are negative influence is simply the unwillingness to see things as they truly are....F'd up.

Who said rock and roll was so great, and if you are calling rock and roll devil music, then you truly are ignorant. rock and roll is a mixture of gospel and jazz, not devil music by far. But really, if you want to listen to truly good music go back to the 60's and 70's and listen to some of the greats like B.B. King, Ray Charles, Stevie Ray Vaughan, that's music. If Boom Boom tick, get high, go to the club and exploit women is what you want, then I'm sure you like this newer cRAP. But if you want real rap, go to the 90's, when gangsta rap got big. Yeah, it's evil, but, musically, it's the best.

I say that it is very stupid and a tad bit ridiculous to do such a thing. It is not required that someone with this amount of money should share it with others because it's is. There are no laws to mandate how one is to spend their earnings(who would want to live like that). I think what shocks the world is that he did not give this amount of money to the poor. Yes, it makes since to those who are poor 'cause they would be on the recieving end. But if you think about the person who is to give their money, it no longer makes since. Who is to say that he has no family and friends? If he is now taking care of his mom, dad, grandparents, siblings, in-laws, friends, and of course those new found people who just show up when you get money. Then he deid help his "hood" out. If you think about it that's a lot of people to help. You can't save the world. If he wrong and selfish the lord will make sure that he isn't able to enjoy this money. If he is a good man who bought himself an expensive gift, but was deserving of it, then we can not judge him. I think that anytime anyone with money buys outrageous things that since they have so much it's not really that crazy to them. If you see later on the news facing bankruptcy then maybe it wasn't ment to be. But give the man his privacy and let him live. Maybe if we didn't torture the rich by following them, and exploiting them, and stalking them, and degrading them, and let them live normal unposted lives. Then maybe they would share with the world. He needs that pool to be that big. He can't go and swim anywhere else. If the man doesn't have privacy in his own backyard to take a swim with out the world taking pictures and being nosy (cause they don't have it like that). Then to enjoy life you must buil your own oasis. We have forced the rich to buy such big ignorant homes. The only way you can be comfortable is in your home(and now you have people taking pictures of you in your house). So who wants to spend all day in a shack? I wouldn't. Leave the man alone.

Because you BIG TIME PLAYERS make them think that without a big house, car, POOL, and a lot of money they are nothing... So how do you suppose that they learn values???? Anything can be made offensive to anybody who wants to find something offensive with it. Not all Hip Hop and rap is actually bad.. and no i dont support all types of rap. And my favorite genre is actually zouk..

it all goes back to who influences our so called superstars and then the most important fact...what sells.. If we dont buy it, then they wont sell it.

its hard to find a good loosing team anymore, but its all about winning these days. so however an individual perceives
certain entertainment is up to their personal point of view. I however do let my kids watch the NBA. I accept the fact that its there and i accept it as a motivation, but i teach them right from wrong and then its up to them once they are out of my house. As a parent, its my duty to teach my kids the right way to do things. Not waste my time trying to make sure they arenot exposed to everything. There is no way t filter everything i dont want them to know. sometimes you just have to use the role models we have and shape them into something else. And sometimes its just what tv says they are.

Everyone leaving comments about giving back to the community. I agree with Greg about these stories not being shown, and its not like most of these people leaving negative comments give back either.

Maybe it is true Athletes in the top 100 dont give back as much to charities but they still give more than alot of people could afford to give. Besides they need money to finance their "anti-scandal" defense. Just because someone hasnt given money back specifically to your community, doesnt mean the havent given back at all.

Posted by: Khree | July 30, 2008 2:45 PM | Report abuse

I find it funny when people say that athletes shouldn't make so much money and that teachers and doctors deserve more that athletes. They don't. A teacher gets paid to educate, a doctor gets paid to heal, athletes get paid to entertain. How many people do you know that will spend money to watch teachers and doctors do their jobs? Athletes get paid obscene ammounts of money because people want to be entertained and will gladly pay for that entertainment. Those athletes generate billions on top of billions, and I don't think making $111 million is too much to ask when you consider how much money he generates for the team and league.
It's the same reason actors and musicians make so much money.

Posted by: checkie | July 30, 2008 2:47 PM | Report abuse

Look, I like alot of rap, that doesn't mean that it's not wrong to put most of it in the hands of our children. I think that children should be taught teamwork, and that popular team athletics should reinforce the idea of teamwork. That's just not the case. Someone says Cleveland, you think Lebron, LA Kobe, but someone says Boston or Detroit, what do you think...Celtics or Pistons. Rap music is an extension of our me first society and does have a negative impact on our children. I guess the biggest thing for me with the NBA was, a few years ago, they stopped requiring kids to attend college before entering the NBA. They don't have that period where they learn media responsibilities and that their off-court behavior affects the entire team or why they should even care about what effect they have on the team. This is all missing, these days, and I think alot of it is due to the influences on society, particularly rap music. But it's the medias portayal of African American Society that lies at fault, not the music itself. See, you hit the nail right on the head: "the most important fact...what sells." I've enjoyed our conversation, btw.

I read a comment about how it is not fair that When people like a basketball player can make so much money from playing a simple game, when police officers risk their lives for pennies. True as it is last time i checked we helped make these basketball players so rich. Just like singers, and rappers, and actors, and so on. When people like your music they buy your cd, and money goes to the artist. They go to the concert and buy tickets and money goes to the artist. They make shoes, clothes, and perfume and again we buy it. We give these artist all our money. We pay thier bills. We allow our kids to fall in love with these people and then we spend our last dime to please our kids. Then we sit around and get mad at them for making millions for a slam dunk. Why? we bought his jersey, tickets to see him play, his books, his shoes. The basket ball team didn't give him 111 million dollars we did. If we didn't spend our money on their products and produtcs so we can look like them maybe they wouldn't be worth so much. We give them all our money and hype them up, but when they spend that money on themselves instead of giving it back to us now were angry. We gave them all this money and power. These people are nothing without their fans. Im sure there are people who will give up their rent money to go to a Britney Spears concert. But when the rich and famous go and buy a million dollar platnium mailbox flag then were outraged. It's backwards you can not fault someone for what they make if it done legally and respectably. If you have a problem with it don't waste what little money you have on adding to their millions. This is the america we created. When was the last time you saw a rich police man. No one will skip their rent payment to donate the money to their local police dept. to ensure they can get better equiptment. People will go to Mcdonalds and spend their last 5 dollars on a meal before they give that same amount of money to the local fire station. It's sad but it's true. It's our own fault.

If you think this is rediculous stop supporting it... Its the fans that keep this kind of shtuff happening. Seriously !

Atletes drain money from everything. They go to high schools and coast through because the play ball well, go to college for free (which HELLLO you pay for by paying higher tuition fees), and then get these athletes get out of college and play ball for a few months out of the year for MILLIONS (which you pay for because HELLO have you seen the feaking price of tickets???) or in more $ to your cable company to aire sports. UGH !
Wake up people , push yourself away from supporting this - where does it get you anyway ???
Turn off the TV and LIVE your OWN life and stop supporting garbage like this.
He is ONLY able to spend 11 million on projects like this because YOU keep tuning in.
Life is too short to live it infront of a TV.
GET OUT THERE and get involoved in what is directly around you, your family, your job, your community, whathave you . Just think what a better earth we'd live on if we all could stop supporting giant hypocrasies like this and used the time somewhere more effective.

Most of the parents have been influenced by the same things, and this is one of the biggest problems, the parents. Alot of us have only one, many none. These people seek out role models elsewhere. So, rappers, NBA players, and movie stars raise them. The thing about it is, these used to be the minority, but now, children being raised with one or no parents are getting out of hand. Where rubbers, people :)

Gil does give back to the community - even his coach was on the radio last week commenting on how much he gives to the community, that's not even publicized. And this area, greater Wash. knows how he gives to the schools and even has the team owner matching his contributions. He's earned it, so if he wants a nice pool, go for it! It's also a great form of exercise for him, since he's an athelete. Gil enjoy that pool! DC loves you!

I can understand why you accept cetain points of views. And actually i believe you must finish at least one year of college before you can enter the draft now.

The thing is, we just dont have the most positive influences out right now, but we cant blame that on an entire league all the time. We have to either embrace what we have or create something new.

"Agent 0" is so appropriate for his dumb behind. I would think he would be more practical with his "new wealth" (hood rich)considering his humble beginnings and his mother's struggle to care for the family. I guess the NBA wouldn't teach the value of saving for the "not-so certain future" to today's players...yet they remain ignorant... until that career-ending injury happens and they're BROKE and lonely. Perhaps all this money can help "His Royal Dumbness" come up with a MARRIAGE PROPOSAL, BIG RING and a WEDDING DATE so her can finally marry "Her Fertile Highness" (aka Agent 00-IQ). They can wed by that obnoxious, non-kid friendly pool at HIS house OR she and the 2 kids (and a possible 3rd on the way), will continue to live HER house that's NOT TOO FAR from his. Between babies she can run to the mailbox and pick up the check...they'll be one big RIDICULOUS family.

But, I'd venture to say that most people find repetitive use of the "n-word", exploitation of women, glorification of drugs and violence and a ridiculous amount of profanity offensive. This would be about $500K and is not as impressive as a $1M pool should be. Nice, but these athletes get taken for rides based on the price tag. That pool will need to be remodeled in 5-7 years.

You don't know what reason or why the mural was done. So to make comments about things that we don't know all the facts is a waste of time. Are they overpaid yes. But to say it is up to them to pay for schools and other things in the community is wrong. It is up to the goverment if you want the systems to change then get out and vote for change don't blame the athletes.

This is for all of the people that seem to have a problem with the way that Gil spends his money. Jik made a very good point when he stated..

Posted by: Jik | July 30, 2008 1:59 PM

This should be a very eye opening statement. It is true. Just how many of us can say the we sacrifice a percentage of our salaries to a worthy cause? He who is without sin may cast the first stone. The cost of the construction of his pool is irrelevant. Who cares, really? Whether Gil spent the money on the pool or not, none of that money would have gone into OUR pockets! We should all spend a little more time thinking about how we, OURSELVES, can make a difference and less time whining about those that may not. Whining does not make things better and it does not make a difference. Chew on that! Also... to those who made and continue to make the negative remarks about African-Americans and referring to them as thugs, uneducated, etc. It would behoove you to know the difference between The White House and The Nation's Capital. I'll give you a hint... Gil is NOT standing in front of The White House. Instead of posting ignorant comments on a website spend more time educating yourself and less time pontificating on how and why Gil spends his money. Green (jealousy) doesn't look good on ANYONE.

2. There are plenty of wealthy, white businessmen out there spending ridiculous money on wasteful things. But somehow Gil is a classless, tasteless, thug who should be ashamed of himself. Too funny.

3. For those who somehow think he's an ankle or knee injury away from being broke... sorry but he just finished up his last contract which was for $65 million plus he's gonna get that $111 million even if he gets hurt. Such haters.

What a person spends the money they earn on is thier buisiness. I say, If it helps the Wizards win games' realyzing the party is at Gill's after the championship all summer long; I don't have a problem with his personal creativity at home and the cost.

We all wish we could afford it, SO DON'T HATE.

Dosn;t mean I would spend it that way, but how nice it must be to afford it!!!

A bit of wisdom, don't hate over what others have and can afford, because they are blessed and no matter what anyone thinks, every player in the NBA is blessed. (Those salaries}

I was raised to be happy for the Joneses and your turn for blessings may come.

So many haters, WOW! Hollywood star's spend more for a birthday party, come on at least he has a pool for everyday if he desires!

This is ME, and what I believe, PEACE OUT!

First of all to Whitey:

DO YOU HAVE A JOB?? Because if you do, you must don't spend much time at it because you making too many comments here to be doing any work at your job.

NIGNOGS: Why does it always have to be about smoking crack?

QUE: I like that in you.

As far as class for those of you that think Kobe has so much of he did he would never have to buy that "I'm sorry ring" after he f@$d up and cheated on his woman. I guess that was a classy move huh? Does anybody remember that?

STOP THE HATE, Obviously the man is worth something if they paid him the money. If it were you, the money would get spent on whatever you choose.

I say spend that money if you got, and donate to whomever you please, if you please. As some of you said, what are you doing with your disposable income.

I am jealous though, only because I can't swim in that beautiful lagoon.

I still cant believe the blatant prejudice still going own.

Ever heard of if you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all.

Yefah, It's not about hating rap music, hip hop, or anything like that. It's hating their influence on society that was my point. I actually like rap music, and for that point, all music. Even though I like it, I hate what I see our world becomming as a result of its influence. Those of you who are blinded by principle need to open your eyes and see it's not black and white, but right and wrong, moral and immoral, love and hate. We should embrace our diversity, teach the good that comes from this diversity to our children. But, if people who are involved with this modern hip hop culture don't accept it's obvious influence on society, then they are simply denying the painful truth.

I own my business, other people do my work for me. I've been checking this post regularly on one of the 4 computer screens in front of me. When I get stuck on a design, it helps to concentrate on something else. If you don't like me or what I have to say, good. I don't want you to like me or what I have to say. In fact, my goal is to anger people, or to make them think. If you are blinded by your preconceptions, then you will be angered by my posts, but if you have an open mind, then you will look at what I've said in whole and realize that I have a point...a good that everyone else is afraid to say.

Wow. Sweet. The guy has worked hard at something he loves for his whole life. If he wants to have a sweet pool, good for him. People should not be telling him how to manage his money. I'd be in that pool from sun up to sun down with bar-b-q on the grill, a fridge full of drinks, and a "few" ladies.

As far as the "in debt o/u age 40" deal, he definately will not be. It's not like he's buying a 10 mil dollar pool, a 50 mil dollar house, or taking a 20 mil dollar vacation to Europe/Hawaii/where ever.

The United Way
The United Negro College Fund
The Fraternal Order of Firefighters
The local Christmas toy drive
there's a couple more.
but i never said anything about donating, I just want to point out that what we covet and allow to influence us, particularly young people, is shameful. and to someone to get angry over a millionaire spending a million dollars is also shameful. And I think the pool is really cool and is going to be nice as hell.

I must say I truly respect your point and hey no hard feelings from me. I would consider a Uncle Tom or a House Nigga for posting what I said but its cool I'm not taking no one side but the truth is the truth whether its stereo-types or how people are. I just think alot times we spend our money on some crazy stuff but thats what he probably always wanted so hey if thats what he want he can have it. but if 10years come from now and he is in FORECLOSURE then sad on him. Another commenter mentioned that plenty of white guys are probably building pools and additions to their houses that are just as huge and over the top. I know this is true, I live in Gil's neighborhood. Whether these people are doing as much for charities is an open question. They may well not be.

I agree before its all over most of the sports guys will be in soup kitchens because they have no common sense or have not been educated enough to take care of what they have. Their talent and the people around them took advantage of them and pushed them into being trained like a bear, horse or monkey. Poor guys just don't know any better.

Posted by: Corina | July 30, 2008 4:45 PM | Report abuse

Enough with the "starving children" comments! If you people are really concerned with the growling bellies of the poor, then how about you pawn the very computer that you are posting these blogs on, and use the money to buy the first homeless person you see a nice steak and lobster dinner! I surmise that less than 10% of the people that has posted comments about the money being better spent has actually, himself, done something to help the poor, hungry, or less fortunate. I bet the last time you wanted to spoil yourself with a pricey pair of jeans or a designer purse you didn't say "You know what...instead of buying this item that I want but really don't need, I will save the money and give it to the poor." We all spend money on things that we can do without. What's the differnce between the average "Joe" that makes $50,000 a year wasting $1,000 of it on recreation and things that make them happy and Gil, who makes $100 million a year, spending $1 million on a pool?
I'm sure none of you are concerned with the poor when you want to go to see the latest Blockbuster are you? Or when you want to go to that concert that costs $100 bucks a ticket. No you are not!
If his salary enrages you that much then stop being faithful patrons of the sports industry. The fans are the ones responsible for these ridiculous salaries. If no one gave a crap about sports and no one attended games and other sporting events then these atheletes would not make a fraction of what WE pay them. So my feelings on the matter is this....Embrace the monsters that YOU, the fans, have created and everything that comes with it! Including $1 million pools.

Their salaries only represent a small portion of the capital that is generated through its operations. Please believe that the players are taking home a smaller piece of the pie than the "big dogs" you cant name. Wake the h*ll up. Personally, I wouldn't be as extravagant as Mr. Arenas but then again I don't have a fraction of the scratch he has. Where does a nine foot guy go to hang out in the afternoon?

In this case he goes to his back yard. I think it's great. I hope he enjoys it all the time.

Pools are great for relaxing and relieving stress. I wish I had a pool in my backyard.
Good job. And think of the property taxes he will be paying every year on that monster.

All he needs now is a pond for Carl (Spackler).

P.S. I wouldn't know him if he introduced himself.

Posted by: Where in the world is Gilbert Arenas? | July 30, 2008 5:35 PM | Report abuse

Gil, Its your dough, use it the way you want to. He donates a lot of money to charity, maybe not a huge percentage of his salary since he gets paid to much, but still a lot.

Posted by: BRulz | July 30, 2008 5:37 PM | Report abuse

The problem with Arenas is his audience. He is rubbing the public's nose in it and they are complaining when all they have to do is stop buying his sneakers, and other stuff that allows him to disrespect them in this way. In the old days there would have been a line around the arena at every game until attendence drop so low that the Wizard's would be forced to trade him. Black folks should have the traffic so tied up downtown that the games would have to be played someplace else.

Agree, these haters! Why should Gil have to feed every hungry person in the world, that's surely not his responsibility. Does Donald Trump feed every hungry child, and he's a billionaire, comes from money. Gil gives to the community, charities, etc etc. He even waited for the busload of Katrina evacuee's with groceries and all at the DC armory, after the few 100 New Orleans evacuee's were brought to the area (how many sports figures would do that; even though LaVar Arrington, ex-Redskin at the time helped also. We have great atheletes in this area who do support the community and they do things that a lot of richer people wouldnt do. Mind you, these are young men also. Gil even helped a child that he saw on the news whose home caught fire (and his mother died from the fire)...just from looking at the evening news. So before these haters pre-judge, please know your facts.
Also, as far as agents, Gil didnt need an agent - he negotiated his own contract. Mind you this was his second contract, first one was for $65mil. So i think he can treat himself to a nice extravagant pool in the comforts of his own personal dwelling.
One more note - Gil even gave back $16 million off of the offered contract BACK TO the Wizards...yes, he was offered the max $127mil. And mind you, he didnt have an i think he's intelligent enough not to go bankrupt, e.g. Hammer, Evander.
He also has addidas contracts, spalding, other endeavors, he even spoke of his vitamin water stock on his blog. He's no dumb athelete, like these racist posters are trying to portray.

What a waste of money! There are millions of people who work hard and can't afford the basic needs of life. This guy plays a game for a living. He could do so much good with that cash, but instead builds a million dollar pool and has a portrait of him self painted in front of the White House. Only way he'll ever get to the White House I guess. Doubt he'll ever be there by winning a championship. Seriously does someone who play a game deserve $111 million dollars. This country has it's priorities so screwed up. Let the teachers struggle, don't praise the doctors that allow these guys to get back on the court quickly from their knee injuries, but treat a bunch of overgrown kids playing games like GODS. It's totally disgusting and I understand why the rest of the world hates us.

Posted by: NotaFan | July 30, 2008 5:39 PM | Report abuse

lets break down 111 million.... first comes his agents 10% about 15 million. after taxes he will receive about 50 million over the life of the contract. Then add in family, moochers and his entourage, girlfriends and anybody who knows him he will be lucky to save anything for his mortgage.

I totally agree about politicians, if every politician including judges and district attorneys had to take a polyagraph test, America would be in horror to really witness all of the lies, it is a time for change alright, but it is not with any of the politicians running for office now.
Back to Gil, hey you know here is what people are suppose to do and not do, If you are so freakin rich from greed , maybe players dont need 111 million dollars to play the game that they love, further more its not hate, its common sense when little children cannot go to the game because it is too expensive. Owners are responsible as well, its not all of the players, "ITS GREED" and based on the playoff series with the CAVS, maybe some trimming is needed. I do think that there is a reason why most rich sports stars end up completely poor in the end is due to the fact that the education regardless of whats on paper is not there, only classy players like Michael Jorden will always be financially secure because they are educated and dont spend money on million dollar pools.

I agree 100% with Kell and Mustang about the 'slave' mentality that these ghetto NBA players are portraying. they grew up with no money, and now that they've all of a sudden got all this money they spend it on useless things, instead of helping out their less fortunate 'bros'. This isn't about race, but more about a state-of-mind.

Well this is really a surprise, a NBA star who does'nt spend his money on drugs! But then again a million may be just a drop in the bucket! These guys make their money off of the work of other players. The only pros in sports who really earn thier money is there is a sport where one is really demanding on ones talent. Plus you pay for nearly verything you do in the sport, coaches, trainers, green fees, etc.

Once again we recieve CNN watched only comments about our President. Yopu know no one here is saying the man is perfect, but you never know how tough it is being a leader unless you have been inside that bubble yourself. We cant possibly blame the countries problems on one man, "ALL" of our belived politicians have been selling us out for years. I keep hearing how wonderful Mr. Clinton was, well the free trade agreements that were put into place while he was in off really have destroyed things as well, and we are all forgetting that we were in more UN sponsored military operations then any other president under clinton. I think it is safe to say all of our representatives stink, and until there is an FBI type orgamization to keep politicians hinest, it will continue to be the way things are.
I Just think that sports stars make entirely too much, which "WE THE PEOPLE" have financed. same with politicians, "WE THE PEOPLE " vote them into office. When it becomes a time when people stop going to games then we will see a reduction in the criminal salaries that players make, only then when "WE THE PEOPLE" stop supporting these sport stars and really help them realize that it is the sports fan that makes them who they are. Baseball is seeing this effect, attendances are down, because people are tired of baseball and all the drama. The Press are partially responsible for fueling sports drama.

They get paid that much because they have special God given skill and they worked hard to achieve their goals. Do I think it is fair? No, but that is how America works. Its hilarious how many posters make comments out of pure ignorance. Consult the facts before you attempt to "judge" this man for his expenditures. For those who say he does nothing for the community, why don't you look up his Zer0 2 Her0 charity? "Wait, HE has a charity? Surely you jest!" Not to mention the fact the he donated $100 for every point scored in a home game during the 06-07 season. Said donation went to, wait for it... his "local DC area schools". He even convinced team owner Abe Pollin to match him penny-to-penny. That's 41 games for the third leading scorer that season. Google it. He also makes bets with other players in which the money goes to charity. Don't pay attention to the fact that the "so-called do-nothing-for-charity guy" has a few webpages set up for ,unbelievably, charity, notably . Google it.
For the ones who say that sports players are overpaid, I agree. So are actors (many who make more per film than the average player salary, hi Will Smith), musicians, oil and other big business execs and many politicians. I don't hear anyone say "Will Smith didn't deserve to make $80 mil last year. I hope he falls in his multi-million dollar home (". If you're gonna complain about the amount that athletes make, don't ignore those who do the same amount or, gasp, less work.
Finally, try not to compare an athletes salary to that of a civil servant. Yes, teachers, policeman, fireman and others deserve more. You know what? Pay them more. Athletes, actors and the like only make exorbitant amounts of money because we voluntarily pay their salaries. We watch their programs, we buy the tickets and we buy their products. No one is making you do it. But ask yourself, when was the last time you complained about increasing taxes? When was the last time you voted "for" the latest tax hike? How quickly we jump on the side of our "low-paid" civil servants, only to ignore the fact that the only reason English Teacher Ms. Doe didn't get her raise is because we voted against proposition so-and-so. We volunteer to pay for needless entertainment but complain when the government makes us pay for necessities like education, law enforcement and "the guys who drag me out of a burning building". Give me a break.

Well comparing doctors to sports players is a little extreme. For Doctors and other professionals out there , they had to go to school for years. so I believe they deserve the pay they get, However sports stars are made on ratings and TV, no education required, and half of the sports stars cant even do basic math and english.

Nice, very nice. You all are a "bunch" of haters. He does not owe it to the world or anyone else to spend his money any other way than on himself. for the person who commented on the starving do you know that he is not helping out in that department? What do you suggest that he do? Send all of his money to the needy? You wouldn't do it if you had that kind of money. STOP BEEN HATERS. he doesn't have to be at home all of the time, but when he is there, he has a pool to enjoy. he has enough money to enjoy someone else's pool when he is away.
Gilbert, you played hard and earned your money. Don't feel guilty about spending it. If you want to use it to wipe your behind when you go to the be it. It's yours.Just remember to always give thanks to the one who affords you this opportunity. Folks...STOP HATING

One more point, someone mentioned that these ball players make so much money and the tickets are so expensive that the poor kids cant see them play. Well, Gilbert even goes to the low income neighborhood and plays for the community, kids. That's one of the reasons why he goes there...he said so that the kids can see him and close up..closer than any game at the arena. And the kids loved him.

I bet you anything that the million dollar man doesnt pay into anything because his high dollar accountant has showed him the art of write offs, Further more that charity thing that was mwntioned was purely a write off..........please
Oh you mentioned entertainment..............Key word
Entertainment is what "WE THE PEOPLE" subscribe to, once again I say if you dont like it, "STOP GOING TO THE GAMES"
I think we should have a system that sports players, Actors and anyone else in the entertainment business should get a large tax that goes directly to pay for our cival servants who to be inspired and motivated. I agree with the earlier writing suggesting that its not only sports stars that make entirely too much.
My answer to the problem is , dont go to any of the games and stop watching actors like will smith if you disagree. Although I really like will smith as an actor, I agree on the criminal 80 mil made last year, and these people should not be able to hide there earnings by way of write offs ect, unless they give money to support our teachers, fireman, policeman, military veterans and so on.

The average American who works an every day job gets about 40% of there paycheck takin away for social security, taxes both federal and state, and medicare, I mean seriously I know a person that is a cival servant that gets half there paycheck takin away to pay for these programs, now this is where the 111 million dollar playes need to fit in, instead of paying useless charities and wasting the money on what the accountant says they should do, none of it should be a write off or tax shelters unless they match that money to the civil servants and start relieving the average american of the burden of paying for these social programs that are failing anyway.

Quick hits after reading all the comments:

1) First Hibachi does give to charity. Could he give more yes, but so could all of us. Gil does donates to community, remember him calling out Jefferson for his Arizona donation or giving money to charity for how many points he made that night to name a few , so if wants to spend his money on a pool, let him, whether he goes broke or not is not our concern. Were ppl up in arms when you bought that new computer or video game system instead of donating that money.

2) The pool pic above ARE NOT THE COMPLETE PROJECT...Stein said so as much so before ppl rip the man on pool design and whether he could of paid less for it, let see the final project first.

3) people complain about the money athletes get but as long you support the industry like you do, they will get the money, if you don't like it, try to change it or just don't support it. It like complaining about politicians in office but not voting to replace them

4) To say that some of the comments did not have racist undertones is honestly ignorant, Whitey said in best in on of his about how he hated ppl who share his view point were making some messed up post, not implying all the comments that attacked Gil did but lets not fool ourselves in thinking that there were no racist undertones at all today. I feel sorry for Dan Stein and the regular commentators here today because if this was your first time reading the BOG, you might come away with a different impression then what this blog represents.

5) Lastly Arenas isn't hurting for money anytime soon,so forget the broke comments anytime soon. Forget he signed, sans agent, a $111 million dollar contract. Add in endorsement deals, stock in companies and the fact with his personality he is going to get a TV gig when he is done with NBA, I think he is good on the money front.

So while you can bash or question Agent Zero on a lot of things, don't just make blanket statements that can make you look bad in the end.

I make 60K a year(decent living) and my wife and I did some upgrades on our home that cost about 25K.(granite counters, cabinets, island in kitchen, new doors and light fixtures So i spent about a 1/3 of my yearly salary on my home. So am I "ignorant". Am I "idiot" for spending money on my home.
WAKE UP people, the home now is worth a million more. And my house is worth 20K more.

So should the goverment put a limit on the amount for a car or a home, should the goverment make the rich give thier money to charities and to the ppor and to schools. THAT WOULD BE COMMUNISM, and since we are a free society and country a man can use his cash for whatever purpose as long as it isnt hurting others.
This is such a topic becasue it's a BLACK ATHELETE doing such a thing. Hugh pool has NEVER been a problem. No one has ever seen his house and oppulance as a problem.( nor the several wioment aht live with him) Liberace had pianos ( in the 70's) that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and never was looked upon negatively.
WHY WE DOING THE BROTHER LIKE THAT. God forbid he has more than one female living with him ( like Hugh) He will be called a PIMP then, but we all know HUGH the best pimp of them all.

First, very cool pool and enjoy. The White House pic with a Pit Bull is SOOOO Ghetto and ridiculous. You are a basketball player who is rich because of your ability to put a round object in a metal rim 10FT off the ground. You're NOT Obama and quite frankly one is enough. Have some class and respect for the office. Its not the THUG HOUSE for godsake!

Amazing how much jealous hating is going on here...
1) Gil deserves every penny in that contract. He's a top 5 point guard, and he fills the Verizon Center seats.
2) Remember, he gave up $15 million when he signed this deal. Who among us would give 10% of an offered salary back to our employer?
3) The money for this pool he'll get back and then some when he sells his house 3-4 years from now when the market is booming again, so it's not only a cool pool, it's an investment.
4) Nothing wrong when a man shows he loves his dog, except when it's a black man and it's a pit bull, then the racist haters come out the woodwork.
5) I bet that based on % of salary, Gil gives more money to charity than anyone of us.
6)" can take the man out of the ghetto..." this idiot doesn't realize Gil never even lived in the ghetto. He just assumes because he's black and a baller... Ignorant, racist, underachieving and envious is a sad way to go through life, no?

Posted by: Bill | July 30, 2008 9:24 PM | Report abuse

hey maniacsyko i have an argument for 3 out of the 6 points you tried to make here.

1)[maniacsyko] Gil deserves every penny in that contract. He's a top 5 point guard, and he fills the Verizon Center seats.

1. wrong. nobody in hell nevermind planet earth, deserves that kind of money for doing something they love, and besides the best point guard [chris paul] doesnt get that kind of money.

2) Remember, he gave up $15 million when he signed this deal. Who among us would give 10% of an offered salary back to our employer?

2. your right that none of us would give 10% back to our employer, but also none of us is getting 111 million over six years

3) The money for this pool he'll get back and then some when he sells his house 3-4 years from now when the market is booming again, so it's not only a cool pool, it's an investment.

3. no argument

4) Nothing wrong when a man shows he loves his dog, except when it's a black man and it's a pit bull, then the racist haters come out the woodwork.

4. no argument because thats true, and im white for the record

5) I bet that based on % of salary, Gil gives more money to charity than anyone of us.

5.if i was getting 111 million over 6 years, i would give generously to charity

6)" can take the man out of the ghetto..." this idiot doesn't realize Gil never even lived in the ghetto. He just assumes because he's black and a baller... Ignorant, racist, underachieving and envious is a sad way to go through life, no?

6. no argument

so you see.....all of these points would be valid if we were making anywhere near as much money as he was thats all im saying

Are you people serious? He earned that money so he can spend it how he pleases. One pool will not cause him to go broke. The comments posted by most are racist and malicious, which is more frightening than Gil going broke. I don't hear any one complain when he gives away a jersey after every game, $$$ to schools for each point he scores, or free shoes to dc housing projects.

you reap what you sow, whether you have something personal against someone or you simply dont like the idea of showing them respect because they came into this world looking different from you, eventually it comes back to bite you in the ass one way or another. if you like being treated with respect by others then its very likely they would like the same treatment from you....and don't put a label on people just because of others behaviors, its disgusting......this is to all the unecessarily racist comments....especially the condescending ones makes me sick to my stomach!

btw....i wouldnt build a million dollar swimming pool, and if i was making $111 million, 100 mil would go intro trying to make the world a better place for someone else less fortunate than i am especially those who sleep without a meal....its sad to see billions on top of billions being spent on killing other people or on needlessy lavish spending just so the rich can get richer and stay satisfied......i mean really....if your worth a billion or a hundred million you can still live your lavish lifestyle without being extravagantly selfish and ignorant. i give what i can alot of the times and uneccessarry crap at times bt i wouldnt put out a buffet meal on my table and indulge in it all by myself when there are starving children who have done nothing to deserve dying of hunger........whether they are right outside my door or halfway accross the world......try putting yourself in that position and imagine how you would feel if you were dying of hunger and someone was indulging selflessly and wastefully across the street from you.....the hunger is hard enough to deal with by do what you can and give what you can afford, it more than does something it says something too.

ps..gil has earned the right to decide whatever he wants to do with his money....whether I or anyone else disagrees or not

2 Things to say:
1. If any of you believe that sports stars and actors make too much stop watching their work products (games, movies and entertainment), and stop buying the products they support. I for one like the entertainment and therefore will not gripe about how much their job pays.
2. If you want to help the homeless with your money or time, no one is stopping you. There are plenty of organizations that will take all the time and money you can give them. In America we have freedom to live our lives how we wish which includes how we spend our own time and money. The same is true for people at all levels of the personal financial spectrum.

While I would not spend 1 million on a pool, I am thankful that I live in a country that allows individuals the freedom to make that choice. Good for you, Gilbert.

I've gotta say it: sweet pit bull guy- walking cliche. Just one question for people who know more than I do about Gilbert, does he have the obligatory tattoo of a basketball on his body that every basketball player has? That's as original as his narcissistic mural that portrays him as the leader of DC.

Posted by: judge | July 30, 2008 10:49 PM | Report abuse

Name one. If you can name one person that is starving from Katrina, have you helped him or her lately? It sounds as if you are assuming that Katrina has caused some sort of unreported famine, but would rather someone else do something about it.

Is that correct or is it just easier to spend someone else's money than to make the sacrifice yourself? If you think there are folks starving from the impact of Katrina, get off your bu++ and do something about it by using your talents and your money.

It is all relative. He gets a larger paycheck than you or I, but his obligations are also much larger. Think of the taxes, agent fees, attorney fees, etc. All of that eats up more than 50% of that contract. Then there is the extended family that most of these folks support. It all adds up. That isn't to say that he is still not rich, but even with all of that I would be willing to bet that Gil gives away a much larger percentage of what is left of his paycheck than does the average person.

Don't sit in the backseat and dictate how someone spends their money. If you see someone hurting, get up and help them with the talents you have. Do not rely on the excuse that someone else should do it because he or she has more money than you. That is the lazy way.

Tizzle, I agree with you completely.

Wow ! a million dollars on a pool that most likely will only be used a couple of months a year. A whole million so this guy can be entertained. This is what's wrong with humanity. Utter selfishness. These athletes think they deserve more for some reason. They really think they're better than the rest of us. And the sad and disgusting thing is that the majority of people don't see anything wrong with those guys' life style. On the contrary, most people think these athletes actually deserve the millions they make and that they're entitled to it. Well, with this kind of mentality on both sides no wonder this world is such a miserable place. Some people are stealing our moneys and the rest of us are cheering them on. What do I get from this guy and the rest of those suckers playing a game and throwing a ball around ???? Absolutely NOTHING. They get to play and enjoy their time and get paid millions at the same time while the rest of us can barely get by. Wake up you dumb people and stop wasting your hard earned money on these arrogant guys who wouldn't think twice about letting their body guards beat you up if you come close to them forgetting the fact that it's YOU people who have made them filthy rich. I hate all athletes. They do nothing for us.

I was in the military for 12 years and did it for about 35,000 (or less) a year without complaint. I did with my money as I wish. I am now a disabled Vet with a retirement of about 1200.00 a month and don't expect Gil to do anything about it. I continue to work in a bank to make more money to provide for my family.

There has been so many of you talking about he should donate to charity, or save the poor people and hungry children. He should give back to the community and schools- its sickening.

There was even one guy talking about how he bust his butt for $80,000 a year...HOW MUCH DID YOU GIVE BACK? Its not his job to help poor people, maybe those poor people should bust there own assets and help themselves.

He makes more than a Doctor, Teacher, a councelor or just about any profession in America because we are willing to pay it. Not the Wizards, we are.

As a side note: Do some research prior to posting and you will find, Gil has donated money even prior to getting this lucrative contract.

EXCERPT: Arenas donated $100 for every point he scored in each home game during the 2006-07 season to local D.C. area schools, while Wizards team owner Abe Pollin is matching that contribution for each away game. He also mentors a D.C. boy who lost his family in a fire at age 10. Arenas takes him shopping, bowling, got him a job as a ball boy for the Wizards, and acts as a brotherly figure towards him.[19]

Everyone has something to say about what this man should do with his money.

He made the money and just because you don't see him giving millions of dollars to charities does not mean he doesn't.

Everyone does not want the world to know what they do for others.

Even if he didn't... People are always so concerned with other peoples business (mainly celebs), we can't even take care of our own

Plus there will always be starving people here in America, Africa and everywhere else!!! I pray God blesses him for the things WE DONT SEE HIM DO!!!!

Well, so much for the cool $50 million the DC Government gave to owner Abe Pollin in January so his Verizon Center and Wizards managers could effectively give it to Gilbert & Antawn as a salary bump a few months later.

And no wonder to this day DC's Office of the Chief Financial Officer here in Washington will NOT agree to provide -- after repeated Freedom of Information requests -- the $50 million Verizon Center "Approved Project Plan" DC Mayor Fenty was supposed to o.k. that was specifically written in the tax legislation.

Maybe this personal pool was in the $35 million which was not yet even identified firmly when the legislation was passed in 2007. Remember as DC Council Members Evans, Catania and Graham will recall from the non-videotaped "public hearing" that only $15 million was firmly identified at the time, and the remaining $35 million was in Verizon Center "upgrades" was to be determined (TBD). I guess TBD means the public never finds out where incremental and precious tax money goes.

I am so sorry: What civic suckers we are in DC for granting such implicit mass subsidies to a few individuals and families in town. We have recreation centers for kids, teens and the elderly who in critical need of healthful exercise that prevents myriad diseases. These centers which close EARLY (including their pools) on Saturday afternoons and are totally closed on Sundays. Rampant HIV requiring more education. At last report 36% functional literacy. Can you believe it? And the best our government leaders can do with a precious excise "sin tax" opportunity which even Council Member Mr. Evans admitted would be largely paid for by Marylanders and Virginians visiting DC is to rebate it right back to an already wildly profitable private party which had already received DC's largess to fund 25% of the original project. That's about $100.00 for every man woman and child in DC. Staggering.

I get it, 25% is not enough for initial infrastructure government funding and land for the original then-MCI Center 10 years ago. Oh no. The Lerners got 100% for the Nationals stadium and the DC Council corruptly wanted another 2nd city skybox to watch the Wizards, so the fix using the public's money was on. Almost criminal. Mr. Evans was the principal architect. And the entire Council should be ashamed, it pains me to have to say it.

I wonder if excellent players Antawn J and Gilbert A even know this kind of kiting using public money is going on. They seem like fine fellows and I don't think they would want the money at the expense effectively of the poor and needy in DC. Especially the kids and elderly in the summertime.

I wrote to Mr. Pollin and his Verizon Center/Wizards team last March and asked they donate $50 million in turn to support DC's recreation centers and crumbling libraries. Mr. Pollin wrote back said he would look into it. Thusfar, no word back.

Looks like MC Hammer's pool to me. And we all know how that story ended. Perhaps he should have built a $100,000 pool and invested the rest...or better yet, follow Bill Gates lead and give the other $900,000 to people that need it. Nothing exceeds like excess!

just let them do whatever they want with there money for one main reason, its theres.. If they want to waste it on a pool or whatever its there right. But not ALL people in the public eyes waste there money, ( I know, that does not make for a good conversation). But if they do, nobody forgets it... Just look around and you will see MANY everyday people wasting there money on (pharmaceutical drugs, street drugs, drinking, mortgage and cars. Shall I go on?? If only people would live there oun life and not worry about others this world would be alot better place to live. PEASE-LOVE-SPARKLE

As others have noted, it was questionable for the Post to publish unauthorized photos of a celebrity's home (even if the Post was let off the hook after the fact). It was an invasion of privacy not to mention an action worthy of a supermarket tabloid rather than a once-illustrious newspaper.

More disappointing is the fact that numerous crude, racist, and offensive comments have been left intact here, despite the policy stating that entries containing inappropriate comments or material will be removed.

Next, I know a great deal about charitable donations. To start, I give the bums on the corner at least a dollar everytime I see one begging to pay for his (or her) heroin needle. Also, I buy plenty of charitable shots at the bar for those less fortunate that can't afford The Goose. I gots to get my drank on. Finally, I upgrade to the premium gas because the gas companies will make that extra $.30/gallon that I know they need. I gotta treats my Escalade like it deserves.

Finally, I find it pathetic that all of you get so riled up with this talk about a man's pool. You are never going to see it, you don't know him, so why the f#ck do you care. I eat pieces of sh!t like you for breakfast.

really i think he should spend his money the way he wants because i am sure if any of y'all made as much as an NBA player you wouldn't remember about the starving kids and anyway he donates money and time for needy kids so y'all can stop hating. If y'all had such a big problem y'all donate your money and stop watching other people and their money. He works hard for his money and deserves it because y'all are practically paying him so y'all are to be blamed. Just look at it if you donated to a charity instead of buy tickets to see NBA matches and buying their gear they wouldn't have that much money to waste on their selves.

So do not buy designer clothes or expensive clothes and buy cheap which you can have money to donate. Peace and love to all that read this and decided to donate money, food or clothes

ok i do believe that he should spend his money and all, but he should also consider spending his money in charity. He is a such greedy person, only thinking about his needs wtf maite, but there are times to spend your money for your self and enjoying for all the hard work. Well all im saying is that those whom become rich like this NBA Player (fagot), should considere those that are fortunate for this harsh economic living.

He earned his money... I do believe sports atheletes today are way over paid but all in all he earned it. So he is entiled to spend it how he wants and like stated in some of these posts he did help victims of Katrina so lay off the guy and let him live his life the way he wants.

Here again we keep hearing this crap : "it's his money. So he can spend it any way he wants". You know, all who say stuff like that and don't see what's wrong with that mentality should NOT be called "humans". You're disgusting. I'm sure you reek of selfishness. I'm sure if your spit were to cure a sick person you wouldn't spit so he wouldn't be cured. How someone could say stuff like that without any shame is beyond me. His money !! No, it's NOT his money and he doesn't deserve a fraction of what he makes. And neither do any of those selfish bastards that we call athletes. No person should be making tens of millions for throwing a ball around or whatever. It is just crazy and ridiculous the amount of money that's being spent on sports. What the hell do we get from all this crap ??? Nothing. Oh yeah, some idiot will say it's entertainment. Oh yeah, I forgot that. How could I have forgotten that ? Entertainment !! Wow !! Such an important thing in our lives. I tell you what idiots, entertainment isn't a necessity. It's something we can live without. And we certainly don't need to be spending billions of dollars on entertainment when there are 47 million Americans without health care - a basic necessity. We don't need sports to survive, but we do need hospitals... I dont get it. An emergency room doctor who spends 10 years of his or her life studying and who saves 100's of lives every year makes under $ 200,000. And Mr Tiger Wood gets a little ball in a whole and he makes $ 100,000,000 !!! Isn't there something wrong with that ?? If you don't see it then you're f**ed up in the head.

Steinber, see what you caused. You did not have to print what Gil paid for his pool. What he paid was his business! I really feel bad for Gil because people are making him out to be some type of selfish idiot and that is so far from the Gil I know. I hope you are proud of yourself Dan and I hope you never get another interview from Gil. If it was me, when I saw you, I would go the other way. What a classless man you are Dan. Way to go! And all of you other haters, leave my man Gil alone.

This dude is going to be out of cash and ala Spreewell style he will proclaim that his "family has to eat" when he rejects his next offer in his later years.

What a waste of money. He is no financial planner, that is clear. He will be agent "0" in no time.

He will end up just like Jose Canseco, Latrell Sprewell, Evander Holyfield and all the other athletes that don't know how to spend money, in foreclosure!

Say, unless someone is posting pics of the invoices, how does anyone claim to know the cost of the pool? Regardless of the actual price, though, at a time of economic collapse, Arenas is spending that money back into the local economy. I bet all the tradesmen going home with it in their pockets are happy about that.

And aside from that, maybe it's a gift from Antawn Jamison for the help with his contract ... or maybe it's a gift from the Wizards for him not maxing out his own contract ... or maybe it will be a gift from the player they pick up with the money he left on the table for the team?

The mural is a bit goofy, but it also makes it clear that Gil is proud to be associated with the city he plays in - and that is in the privacy of his own home, not just when he's out in public. That should be something the fans are happy about. Plus, maybe he really want to be an agent when he finishes his hoops career and is just picturing himself in the Secret Service on duty at those places. He'd be the only Bullets-franchise player ever trained to take a bullet in the line of duty, no?

And for the racism in here ... it used to be that 'only the shadow knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men,' but with the ability to post anonymously, we all get to see that evil plastered out in public. Disgusting.

& again, thank you BBP for bringing some perspective while also interjecting humor! Nobody knows the ins & outs of this pools actual cost. What "hook-ups" are happening, whether or not a corporate event (thus re-couping the cost) will be thrown there upon completion etc etc.

Unbelievable how sad this thing called the internet is!

I have to agree with Whitey. Contemporary hip hop is quite disturbing. It used to be about getting a decent message out. Now the message is simply to tell people how much money an artist has. Of course this is going to affect our youngsters.

Furthermore, yes, teachers and police officers do more important work. But regardless, it's not work that generates billions of dollars, so where would you get the money to pay them as much as a basketball player? When you pay for basbetball tickets, you pay to watch them play. That's it. Do you ask your grocer what he does with the money you pay him? Or your butcher? The guy at the clothes store? No. So why does a basketball player have to explain to anyone what he does with his money?

The pool is excessive, I'll admit it. But in the end, it's his money.

And I'd rather invest in a project that would make sure all those starving kids and high schools wouldn't NEED further donations. Attack the problem at the source, fighting the symptoms will only get you so far.

Agree with above, I smiled when I saw Gil's mural (in his private home) and thought how he probably likes politics and all. I've heard him speak of the secret service and I remember reading an article a few years back, question and answer about what he liked about Washington, and his answer was ...."it was cool to see the president drive by with the motorcade"....I think he might really think being an agent zero really is cool. And I read some of Deshawn's article in Slam (a quote) and Stevenson said this city has Gil's back - why would you want to go somewhere else and start over. DC does love you Gil.

Posted by: Washwiz | August 3, 2008 5:55 PM | Report abuse

and one more note - what he does in the privacy of your home, as i stated earlier, is your business. if you want a nice pool, thats cool. It's probably probably something he has dreamed of, or wanted, since childhood since he is from L.A. (Hef's pool and all at the L.A. playboy mansion). I think it's cool to finally probably be able to make a childhood dream/fantasy come to fruition. congratulations.

I do not want to be american anymore. Why cant someone build a hedonistic party pool and not be called tacky for it. Gaudy...ostentatious...over-the-top...yes. Tacky would be having that beautiful house and putting an above ground pool in because it was cheap. Also, the pool pics you see are not the finished product. It is a canvas for the details. Also, Gilbert is an amazing player. His knee injuries were un-fortuitous. I remember how the initial one happened: Clotheslined in the knee while going up for a bucket. Also, if you read his blog he has been slowly investing in the pool for sometime...not just throwing his money away. Gil seems to be a genuine, if not perfect, person. I just hope someday I am invited to his pad for a swim.

WHat is wrong with Pit-Bulls? Anyone with a brain understands it is the dog, not the breed, that should be held responsible. And then, really, it is the owner not the dog. Pit-Buls are probably one of the most loyal, gentle, charismatic and, yes, powerful breeds. It isn't just athletes who own them...why aren't we more disgusted that rich white women always have a small yuppie dog in a bag that is actually horribly mal-adjusted. Learn something other than the gross generalities about dogs and shut the @$%! up!

Eighty percent George? Show me the source of your stats and yes . . . you are a racist.

Anytime a person makes a derogatory statement about an entire group of people (i.e., black athletes) and backs it up with nothing more than "that's my opinion" or "everybody knows it's true" they are a racist.

Jerry Lewis went broke, Donald Trump went broke and recently Ed McMahon went broke.

McMahon built a big house in California that he couldn't afford and nobody batted an eyelash. He says he can't get work because he hurt his neck, more sympathy.

Nobody is calling any of these men fools, in fact, there was a public outpouring of sympathy, best wishes and even money for McMahon.

Arenas still has his money, his job and his house but somehow he's a fool for building an expensive pool and he's a poster-child for excess.

Is he eccentric, yes. Does he walk to the beat of a different drum, yes. Does he like the limelight, yes.

Does that make him a "ghetto fool" who will "soon be parted from his money", not at all.

So what's the difference between Lewis, Trump, McMahon and Arenas? Oh yeah, that's right. . . how could I be so naive.

P.S. - The mural relates to one of his nicknames "The Black President".

I'm glad Gilbert is (belatedly) ok with the pics. They shouldn't have been taken, but if he's ok with it than that's his decision. I know I'd still be mad if I were him.

Anyway...on to the pool. He got that contract because of his ability. It's not his fault he got injured and wasn't able to lead the Wizards deeper into the playoffs. It's HIS money, he can do with it what he likes. As somebody else posted, it's not like Gilbert isn't extremely active in the community and charitable with both his time and HIS money. Even if he wasn't, that's still his decision to make.

Pool's aren't my thing, but if they were I'd absolutely build something like this if I had the money he does. One day I hope to have enough space and money to build the Mother of All Home Theaters. Excessive? You bet it will be but as long as it makes me happy, I could care less what others think.

The only thing I ask of Gilbert Arenas is to PLEASE play some defense this season. Anything he buys or does with his money off the court is none of anybody's business.

Can we help Gilbert beat Wade in this week's NBA Gauntlet? He's losing 71%-29%.
