Meet Your Leader: Jeff Overton

Unshaven Jeff Overton, after his four-under first round.

As of this writing, 25-year old Indianan Jeff Overton--whose best finish this season has been a 25th--is your AT&T National leader, having gone four-under yesterday and reaching seven-under this morning.

I actually listened in to Overton's post-round remarks yesterday, attempting to ask the scruffy pro whether he was growing a tournament beard. He said he was not. But he did talk about his first experience at this golf course.

"It's no wonder why they call it Congressional," he said. "All the Congressmen and stuff play it."

The two-time All-American at Indiana (who said Calbert Cheaney is his all-time favorite Hoosier hoopster) has never played in a major, qualifying for his first British Open just this week, which made big news back home. He was asked whether he typically watches the majors on TV.

"Those are about the only tournaments I watch, especially when Tiger's playing," Overton said. Otherwise, doctors don't like to watch other doctors. I don't know, do lawyers like to watch other lawyers?"

The point he was trying to make was that pro golfers often don't like to watch other pro golfers, preferring to concentrate on their own games, but at a minimum I would guess that lawyers do make a practice of watching other lawyers. I certainly like to watch other journalists. Especially one whose name rhymes with "Bike Fries."
