Fred Smoot on Christmas Lights and Halloween
It occurs to me that there's just way too much stuff from my visit to Fred Smoot's house to cover in two parts, as I originally intended. So as a brief interlude, consider Fred Smoot's theory on Christmas lights.
This came up when I approached his Great Falls abode and realized that there were still Christmas lights hanging from the roof. I turned to Smoot for assistance.
"Christmas is always on the way back around," he explained. "We ain't got, what, like three, four months to go?"
Then he paused.
'It was like that when I had 11 months to go, too," he admitted. "Why pull them down man? Christmas coming back."
I also asked Smoot whether he holds parties at his house, since such a revelation probably wouldn't surprise the sporting public.
"No man, that was the young Fred Smoot, years and years ago," he said. "Now this is a real quiet, family-type house."
Like, not even any dinner parties?
"I have dinner parties, most definitely, most definitely," he said. "I'm thinking about having a good Halloween party, you know, a Grown-Up Halloween party. I might come as Rick James."
Fred Smoot dressed up as Rick James? That wouldn't get any Web traffic, huh? While I began writing that post in my head, I asked Smoot for previous Halloween highlights.
"The best costume that I ever had? You know what, there was one my mama made for my heart when I was real young," he said. "I had this Freddy Krueger sweater, so I put it on. I didn't quite have the gloves, so she went and got me one of my daddy's work gloves and taped plastic knives to it, and it was the best costume I ever had."
Fred Smoot roaming Mississippi with a striped sweater and cutlery-laced work gloves? Sounds scary.
"You know, those plastic knives, they don't cut too well," he pointed out.
(Part I of House Tour here, Part II to come later today, don't forget to watch the video version on Comcast SportsyNet's Washington Post Live this Friday or on CSN's Redskins Kickoff show Sunday morning. And please see also Smoot's video blog and YouTube channel.)
