Ryan Plackemeier: Not Your Average Punter

Ryan Plackemeier, with Seahawks fans.

This isn't the first time it's been said, but when you look at Ryan Plackemeier, the first thing that comes to mind isn't "punter." Maybe "backup H back." Or "truck driver." Dude's listed at 6-3, 247. That would make him the second heaviest punter in the league, behind only 265-pound Eagles punter Sav Rocca. More importantly, that means the Skins have gained one inch and 43 pounds of punting flesh over the last 24 hours.

Naturally, Plackemeier's teammates have welcomed him in the most hospitable spirit possible: with jokes about putting him straight into the trenches.

"The lineman were making fun of him, like 'All you need to do is put a 4 on that jersey,' " Rock Cartwright said.

"Isn't he the backup left tackle now?" Kedric Golston asked.

"Sure, why not," Plackemeier said. "I mean, obviously I'm a big punter, bigger than a normal guy. So you're gonna get comments. You just kind of go through them week one, then let your punting take care of all that. You don't have to ask for their respect, you just kind of earn it."

The line talk originated from Randy Thomas, but when I asked him about Plackemeier's prospects at guard, he became diplomatic.

"Hey, I like the guy," Thomas said with a wink. "I mean, he's got a nice...he's got a great personality."

And on the line?

"Emergency situations," Thomas said.

Plackemeier, by the way, was a double major with communications and religion at Wake Forest, and likely would have entered the seminary had football not worked out. His grandfather was a chaplain, and he still plans on working in the ministry when his playing career ends. He also referenced religion when discussing his new head coach.

"Spiritually, he's a great man of God," Plackemeier said of Jim Zorn. "He's a real neat guy, and I was real excited that he got this job, for one. I was pulling for the Redskins all season just because of him, and to be here with him is real exciting."

Seminary? I'm surprised Gibbs didn't try to sign him last season.

Gotta come clean - at first glance couldn't tell which one's the punter - still not 100% sure...
