S. Moss and Randle El Discuss the Fan Tackle
Following years of protocol, the TV cameras cut away from the loony fans running onto the field late in the fourth quarter yesterday. And following years of protocol, bloggers and TV reporters spent much valuable time asking the players about it today, because, let's be honest, it's one of the 10 moments of the game that would bring you out of your seat and make you forsake a trip back to the giant tub of complimentary popcorn.
Will it encourage future fans to get arrested if I post these thoughts? I'll roll the dice. Partial video available here.
Antwaan Randle El: We're getting ready to get the onside [kick], we were just talking talking and I heard the fans start yelling. 'What's going on?' Then I look back at Santana....
Santana Moss: I was winding him up for the knockout. I was just gonna go flush. I'm talking about I was looking right at his chest.
Randle El: I just kind of started creeping. Because the guy didn't see me at first. Santana was kind of closing him down, forcing him my way, and I got to the point [where] I was just gonna grab him.
Moss: Boy, I was gonna [Terry] Tate him. I was gonna hit him so hard. My whole focus was trying to win this game. We didn't need that. I mean, I appreciate our fans for being our fans, but when you get beyond being fans and come on the field and put a lot of players in harm's [way], you just don't need that.
Jim Zorn: I was SO mad. I was so mad. One of the most critical parts of the game, we're all concentrating, and then to have those guys, a couple of knuckleheads out there....
Santana Moss: I was just really trying to make sure he got down, I wasn't really trying to do nothing too wild, too crazy, I was just trying to make sure he didn't continue on running around and making himself look like a fool.
Antwaan Randle El: I just kind of whacked him. I didn't really hit him, I just kind of grabbed him by the little hoodie that he had.
Jim Zorn: I was heading after the other guy behind our bench. I didn't see it.
Antwaan Randle El: There's nothing security can do if somebody's gonna take off running, so you've got to do all you can to protect yourself. If you've got a chance to protect yourself do it, get the guy down, that's it.
Santana Moss: I'm not mad that he was out of his mind a little bit, because sometimes everybody get out of their mind, but when you jump over that gate you're REALLY out of your mind, you don't know what could happen.
