Redskins Hip Hip Hooray Again

I'm pretty sure there will be more where this came from. (By Preston Keres - TWP)

Another week, another road game, another hefty Vegas line, another NFC East foe, another win.

Anything else? Oh yeah, there was another "Hip Hip Hooray" chant loudly pouring out from a Redskins team that is about to get more D.C. buzz than any team since the national championship Terps.

I mean, "Hip Hip Hooray" as an official slogan in the 21st century NFL? From a team that, in five weeks, has already given the world photos of pro football private parts, radio shouting matches that attracted national attention and this franchise's best start in a decade? Hip Hip, indeed. There was at least one "Hip Hip" sign in the stands today, and unless I'm crazy there will be dozens more next week. When the history of Jim Zorn's first season is written, that goofy chant is definitely on the first page, and maybe higher.

Two friends have already made piercing reference to the Bandwagon this week, but this isn't about Joe Gibbs, and it isn't about a 20th century gas guzzler. It's about a 50-something guy who wears plaid flannel pullovers in the locker room and twirls quarters on his palm for reporters, a guy who left his players at the end of today's game, asked them to break down the huddle themselves, and then heard them gleefully perform a chant you associate more with elementary school picnics than this billion-dollar enterprise.

Here's how it happened. All the words are theirs.

Antwaan Randle El: "We always do something. Z normally [does] it....He had already broke us down, he was somewhere around there."

Chris Cooley: "I thought Zorn would do it, and they said, 'Someone break us down!' El got in there, and he kind of paused for a second."

Randle El: "I was like, 'Man we've got to come up with something to do.' And then Cooley was like, 'Man, just go ahead and do the Hip Hip Hooray,' so I ended up doing it."

Fred Smoot: "He said, 'Let's just keep everything like we've been handling it, let's Hip Hip Hooray.' "

Zorn (shrugging and smiling): "I just wanted them to break it down. I didn't need them to do it; they just did it. I saw a sign out there that said 'Hip Hip Hooray, Hip Hip Hooray, Hip Hip Hooray.' "

Chris Samuels: "Actually, I seen a little clip of some old stuff with the Redskins, and they used to do that. George Allen. I mean, it's a great thing. They were winning then, we're winning now. We don't care [about perception]. It's silly, but it's fun."

Cooley: "I think it's good to have a tradition. I think it's cool to have a victory [tradition]. Like, it'd be cool if we had a victory song or something fun that we all like."

Carlos Rogers: "Them boys are crazy. Just in general, just copying coach, they're just crazy."

Demetric Evans: "That's the new thang now baby. That's the new thang."

The Redskins DO have a victory song:

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!

What a win!! It was great to see the Skins claw their way back in a hostile environment after being down 14-0. Despite the fact they were hurting, these guys showed a lot of character and a lot of heart. Jason Campbell is just finding ways to get people the ball and the coaching staff made some great adjustments!!

its a rugby tradition invading football.

First the ravens toss some laterals and next the skins are wrapping it up with 3 Cheers.

Awesome hang loose and have fun.

Agree with Matt...want a victory song? Sing "Hail"!! I spoke with a former player (played in 2 SB's) and asked him about it-he told me the players pay no attention and do not know it. Lets change that...

Great finish!!!

I just imagined Dan even more fired up this week headbutting the players as they came into the locker room.

On a nightmarish note, what is up with Jerry Jones giving pregame interviews and spending most of the game on the field. I hope that isn't the new trend for NFL owners. lol

This team and this organization is changing right in front of our eyes. We have a very good shot of winning the NFC East and possibly making the road to the Super Bowl go through D.C. (shhhhhh!!!)

This team really takes "fight on, fight on, 'til you have won sons of Washington" to a new level. Hip hip hooray for JZ and the comeback kids.

Somebody go make copies of Hail to the Redskins lyrics and post it in each locker stall at Redskin Park, it's time for these 'newbs' to learn the proper victory song.

I'm happy for the Redskins - wait, no one chanted "Portis' pockets straight"?

The Skins are playing well, but stop pretending like the Giants game was last season. We thumped you once, and we will do it again. The #1 offense in the league, and the #3 defense. Jacobs will truck Landry again!

wow, i smell a little fear from Giantsfan... coming all the way over here to talk smack.

Jacobs who?
