A Fire Karl Hobbs Site

(By John McDonnell - TWP)

What happens when a middle-of-the-pack Atlantic 11 team goes on a three-game losing streak thousands of miles from home, capped off by a 26-point loss to Hawaii and a narrow decision against a previously 1-10 MEAC squad whose only W came against Wilmington College? Well, among other things, the coach of that middle-of-the-pack team will be honored with possibly the first "FireThisCoach.com" Web site in Atlantic 11 poll history.

And so, meet Fire Karl Hobbs!, which was launched amid yesterday's Coppin State disaster, in a frenzy of pre-New-Year's cheer. Six posts in eight hours on Dec. 30! Pace yourself, guys.

But apparently the site is filling an ardently desired, if niche, demand. Yesterday's message board threads included "Disgrace," and the evocative "Some one should start the Fire Hobbs movement." Done and done.

In fairness, Coppin State, as usual, was playing an absolutely brutal pre-MEAC schedule, with one road game after another against massive BCS-conference powers. So maybe they were just due for a neutral-court win against an average to above-average DI school.

On the other hand, Coppin's one previous win, against Wilmington, by 19? Well, the Wildcats also have a 16-point loss to Felician, a 35-point loss to Kutztown, and a 39-point loss to West Chester. So if Kutztown is 16 points more dominant than Coppin, and Coppin is six points better than GW....well, I don't want to steal all of FKH!'s thunder.

"an average to above-average DI school"

The nicest thing anyone will say about GW this season.

I hate those Fire so and so sites.

I think another big reason this site came about is the utter lack of transparency from the program. Rob Diggs, by far the team's best player and rebounder who scored 25 against Vermont, didn't play at all in the second half with hardly any explanation. As a result, GW was crushed on the glass. Wynton Witherspoon, probably the third best player, has been benched for the last three games. Hobbs doesn't like to talk to the press or describe what he's doing, and that rubs a lot of people the wrong way and makes them assume the worst. Me included, to some extent.

Let's see if this love translates into next week's Atlantic 11 standings.

And by translate, I mean that Coppin actually gets a vote.

It's trivial to set up a web page on blogspot.com. It's only slightly less trivial to set up an actual website.

There's about as much news here as there would be if you reported that someone had scrawled "Fire Karl Hobbs" on a bathroom wall somewhere.

Hey, I'd like to think that my Fire Jim Fassel blog (and countless other online protest sites) had some kind of effect back in the day.

There are plenty of teams and coaches I don't like, but I have a level of respect for most of them. I have no respect for Karl Hobbs. He is one of the dirtiest and most disgraceful coaches on the collegiate level. GW is lucky the NCAA isn't paying attention to him and that program for violations.

And your posting allegations you can't prove on a website....disgraceful is correct.

Here's hoping Hobbsie does get fired at GW and gets a much better college job!

Was that post in response to my post, caphcky? It's pretty well known and accepted that Hobbs has used some questionable recruiting and tactics to get freshmen and transfers(mostly who he has dealt with).

"Pretty well known", yet you have charged somebody with what appears to be a crime without bringing forth any evidence.

Pretty well known fan tactic. He's dirty, but you don't know why.

In a postscript, the Fire Hobbs blogger appears to have been bounced from posting on GWHoops.com, apparently for annoying the more experienced GW alumni fans.
