Jim Zorn and the Fetal Position

A non-fetal Zorn argues with officials. (By John McDonnell - TWP)

With the matchup with the 49ers and Mike Singletary looming, Jim Zorn was asked several Singletary-ish questions today. He talked, for instance, about seeing the great "orbs" of Singletary's eyes, back when both were NFL players. To close his Monday press gathering, the Washington Times's Thom Loverro asked about Singletary's unique motivational tactic of pulling down his pants, and whether Zorn had ever done anything similar.

Zorn joked that he wants to rip his shirt off in front of his players. Then he thought for a moment, trying to think of the right story, and came up with the one time earlier this year when he collapsed into the fetal position in front of his players. The story, more or less, went like this:

"After a practice this year I started talking...about all the things that could happen to us, and I started to act like I was getting stiff, and not being loose. You know, every negative thing I talked about, where in the end of it I fell over. And then as I was in the fetal position, plopped over sideways, I was explaining how this is how it could be this Sunday if we play all tight. But if we choose not to do those things...--and then I kind of loosened up and got back up.

"I think while I was on the ground in the fetal position our players were thinking, 'ok, he's lost it.' I didn't get kicked, there was no dog piling. But anyway, yes, I did. I did."

There are several jokes I want to make--including one mixing Greg Blache's Viagra quote with a particular phrase Zorn used above--but really, I should just keep quiet. Once, quite early on in my time at The Post, a co-worker spied me curled up in a near-fetal position on the floor of my boss's office. We all motivate ourselves in different ways. Here's hoping that at least the experience helped Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas learn how to execute a curl.

"My name is Jim Zorn and I am apparently crazy in a good way."
