Morning Look: A Rookie Touchdown

Wait, rookie second-round picks are allowed to score? (By Al Bello - Getty)

"Beating a dead horse" doesn't begin to describe this. More like "stomping upon a mangled, bloody, decomposing equine carcass that has been lying on the road for four months and is covered by maggots as the sated vultures bid adieu and the public works employees get ready to shovel the entire mess into a garbage bag."

But still. This photo is of rookie defensive lineman Philip Merling. Remember him? Here's what Vinny Cerrato said about Merling a few weeks ago, when explaining why he wasn't worth a Redskins second-round draft pick:

I mean, it came down to Phillip Merling, people say that we maybe should have taken. He has seven tackles right now for Miami....So to take a guy like Phillip Merling, then you'd be asking me, 'Why isn't Phillip Merling playing or making any plays?'

Merling finished with 26 tackles, three fewer than Jason Taylor, who was worth a second-round pick plus. But more than that, as you can see above, yesterday Merling was making a play. In fact, he caught a Brett Favre pass and ended up scoring a touchdown.

That gave Merling one more catch than the Redskins' three second-round picks combined for yesterday, in their meaningless try-out-the-rooks finale. That also gave Merling one more receiving touchdown in his rookie season than the Redskins' second-rounders, combined. They play receiver. Merling weighs 290 pounds.

Oh, and maybe you heard, but the Dolphins won. They finished 11-5. That's pretty good. I hear the guy who runs their team likes linemen or something. Last year's Dolphins draft: OT, DE, QB, DT, OT, RB, OG, RB, DE. That's six outta nine. Ah, must be a fluke.

(The Dolphins also have someone competent in charge of player acquisition, someone who appears to be looking for a change in scenery...Snyder must be licking his chops...)

Anybody realize that after all of this, Cerrato's pockets still straight?

Anyone who still believes that the front office isn't the problem, look no further.
Look at all those draft pics spent on lineman by the Dolphins. When will the Skins get a real GM?

Is little vinny still doing his radio show in the offseason? Can someone e-mail this to him or call and ask him this question?
