Giant Skating Presidents to Skate at NHL Game

(Photos courtesy the Washington Nationals)

"George Washington and Teddy Roosevelt, the oversized racing presidential mascots from Nationals Park, are on the ice right now here at Kettler," colleague Tarik El-Bashir wrote yesterday. "People are taking pictures. Don't ask. And, no, I'm not asking, either."

Me? Hell yeah I'm asking. That's my lot in life. And with Giant Racing President tryouts this Sunday, the timing couldn't be better.

So, what's the deal? Believe it or not, the Giant Skating Presidents will be featured during the second intermission of Monday's President's Day Islanders home game.

The Kids Day Too event will feature mascots from around the NHL--including Blades the Bruin, Stinger the hornet and Tommy Hawk, plus the Islanders' own Sparky the Dragon. The Islanders' game-day crew had thought about bringing in the Skating Presidents for the first Kids Day event this fall, but the President's Day tie-in was too perfect.

"It's President's Day and they're the presidents; we think they'll be pretty entertaining for our fans," Michael Sciortino, the team's game operations manager, told me. "If there was Sausage Day, maybe we'd fly in the Brewers guys."

Sciortino knows the busy appearance schedule for that foursome, and was pleasantly surprised that they were still available for President's Day. He also knows well the record of Giant Teddy, and said he hopes that continues as the mascots complete two scheduled laps around the rink. I expressed some concern about the Nats' mascots not showing allegiance to the local team.

"We're not really thinking about it in hockey sense," Sciortino said. "This is more entertainment for our fans. I don't think we're going to play the Washington Capitals angle at all."

Which is all fine, until he told me that the Isles will be facing the Penguins on this day. Because if there's one thing I know for sure, it's that the Giant Skating Presidents just can't stand Sid the Kid.

How much more popular would Teddy be if he threw down with Crosby at intermission?

So they didn't invite George for some cherry-picking?

BTW, October is national sausage month. Guess that he'll have to eat his words now:

I'm an Islanders season ticket holder and this past Tuesday night, the Nats' logo and the Presidents appeared in a scoreboard promo for Monday's game. I'm not sure how many people knew what it meant, but I was hoping they would let Teddy win at lest just once. Alas, I guess they won't let Teddy have more wins than the Islanders!
