Jim Zorn on Potato Chip Boxes

When I listened to Jim Zorn's 1979 commencement address, one phrase stood out: potato chip boxes. Huh? Here was his full quote, mocking his own relative fame in the city of Seattle. At great, great, great, length.

"I play with the Seattle Seahawks right now, and for the last four years our city and our team have been going absolutely berserk. We are going WILD. It is so much fun to be a Seattle Seahawk and to live in Seattle. We have a team of 45 guys and we're all pretty young, I just turned 26, and we love it up there. We're BIG-time up there. Oh, I'm on potato chip boxes, I've got football cards out, I've got TV commercials. Oh, I'm all over the place, I'm sharp up there. I walk down the street, 'hey what's happening, Jim.' In professional football, there's a lot of success. I make a lot of money. Well, you know how that goes. I've got two houses. Oh man, I've got everything. I've got TV commercials, you know what I'm saying? I've just got it all. I mean, what more do I need?''

Laid it on pretty thick, right? Just setting himself up for the knock down. Anyhow, there's that phrase: potato chip boxes. I was unfamiliar with any potato chip boxes, much less '70s era potato chip boxes featuring long-haired football players. Well, that right there is what a Jim Zorn potato chip box looks like, and you can get it this week with bids starting at $29.95.

That's hilarious! He looks like that long haired kid in the Bad News Bears. Amazing job playing in the NFL if he was really as small as he looks in that picture.

$29.95? Michael Phelps would pay double that.

$29.95 with or without the chips? That box looks like it's been opened - if I can't have a 30-year-old generic-brand Zornchip, what's the point?
