Mike Hinckley's Beard

When Jason Bergmann was detailing some of the Nats' offseason beards the other day, he mentioned Mike Hinckley as a candidate for best in show. Hinckley showed up at camp clean-shaven and respectable, but luckily, the left-handed receiver had preserved the images on his phone. He graciously agreed to share one in this space. And with many of his teammates in the clubhouse.

"It's pretty sick," he offered as a warning. "Prepare yourself."

"Jeez, Amish," Collin Balester said.

Others put hands over mouths.

"Look at this," Hinckley said to Josh Towers.

"That's solid," Towers said.

The beard grew from October until January, and was by far the longest of Hinckley's life. Why did he shave?

"No way I was gonna walk in here like that," he said. "I wanted to walk in looking businesslike, ready to go, not shaggy. As a respect issue, I couldn't have."

But he enjoyed showing off the images. His father-in-law, a preacher, joked in church that his son-in-law was turning Amish. His wife, he said, "stinkin' loved it."

"It was just something to do," he said. "I've never done it before, so I just decided to stinkin' do it."

I approve. See also: Luke Scott.

"Others put hands over mouths."

Please tell me that didn't happen.

If he grew his hair out, too, he could start a modern-day House of David team.

In other news(paper), I hear that Adam Dunn is a fan of MMA. Might be worth a look-see.

heartily approve - too bad he chickened out and shaved. there's not nearly enough good beards in baseball. we need more ballplayers who look like Cousin Mose.

That's what mine looked like until a few days ago, too.
