Penguins Fans' Latest Target: Chris Cooley

Having already succeeded in making me all frowny this morning, Penguins' fans have moved onto a new target: Chris Cooley.

That's right, because Chris's brother Tanner wrote a blog post poking fun at Sidney Crosby, Pens bloggers have gone right back at Cooley, calling him a "meaningless" and "no-name" tight end, suggesting repeatedly that he's gay, arguing that "nobody in Pittsburgh really cares" about "Caps fans and their inferiority complex," mocking his blog traffic, making fun of his wife, picking on the Redskins' postseason record during Cooley's time in D.C., and suggesting repeatedly that he's gay. Plus there was some homophobic stuff thrown in. And gay jokes.

Oh, and adding clever things to his Wikipedia page. Like this one.

In February 2009, Cooley jobbed Sidney Crosby on his blog. Crosby was unavailable for comment, but a Pittsburgh Penguins representative did say that Crosby can't hear Cooley, since he has fame, fortune and popularity clogging his ears.

Plus Photoshops. Lots of Photoshops. Suggesting that Cooley is gay. Whee-haw. That's why we love Western Pennsylvania.

By the way, reader Jon sent along a recent post from 'Cuse blog Hoya Suxa, quoting Chuck Klosterman on the difference between a nemesis and an archenemy:

You kind of like your nemesis, despite the fact that you despise him. You will always have drinks with your nemesis. You will attend the funeral of your nemesis, and--privately--you might shed a tear over his or her passing. However, you would never choose to have a cocktail with your archenemy, unless you were attempting to spike the gin with arsenic. If you were to perish, your archenemy would dance on your grave, and then he'd burn down your house and molest your children. You hate your archenemy so much that you keep your hatred secret, because you do not want your archenemy to have the satisfaction of being hated.

"It fits perfectly with Philly and Pittsburgh," Jon wrote me. "Philly is the nemisis and Pitt is the archrival. Philly I respect, but Crosby could be relagated to complaining to ECHL refs, and I wouldn't be at all sad."

Anyhow, as part of my weeks-long struggle for all D.C. teams to be considered a take-it-or-leave-it package for local fans, it certainly helps when out of town hockey teams decide to target the Redskins.

Um isn't Pitt one of those cities in the running for most likely to be burned to the ground and no one noticing?

Alex, where were you on the cooley blog. We could have used your cleverness last night

Posted by: cooleyfans | February 24, 2009 4:34 PM | Report abuse

remember when the caps didn't sell out their games? I love loyal fans!

Posted by: mmcconn2 | February 24, 2009 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Wait, the most powerful city in the world has an inferiority complex? That's bad news!

Don't even get me started on how inferior Pittsburgh people are. They make Baltimore's inferiority complex stigma look insignificant.

Posted by: O-V-P | February 24, 2009 4:41 PM | Report abuse

It seems a little ironic considering that all the people posting photoshopped pictures in order to shows AO and CC as being gay actually have to go to gay sites to find the pictures to do it on.

Remember when the Pens talked about moving to a better arena in Kansas City? I love crappy cities.

Posted by: BillyBeane | February 24, 2009 4:50 PM | Report abuse

Gosh, it seems that some Pittsburgh fans have put quite a bit of thought into possible indicators and manifestations of homosexuality. Perhaps they might also want to look into research that posits a link between latent homosexuality and homophobia. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Posted by: natsfan1a1 | February 24, 2009 4:57 PM | Report abuse

Where were your "loyal fans" in 03-04 when the Penguins averaged 11,000 fans? Enjoy your polluted city.

Posted by: GTownHoyas | February 24, 2009 5:01 PM | Report abuse

@mmcconn2: Please, could you and other Pittsburgh fans stop using this "well, you didn't sell out so obviously you're not good fans" argument. Because back in the early 1980s, before Mario arrived, the Igloo wasn't exactly packed either. Please. (Oh, and in the first part of this decade, pre-Crosby, the Caps' average attendance consistently exceeded the Penguins.)

Look, the judge of a loyal fan isn't whether he or she buys season tickets and attends 41 home games a year. Some people can't afford it, some people have jobs that won't allow it. I've never had season tickets, but I've been attending games, watching the rest on TV and following the team for more than 30 years. Don't tell me I'm not a loyal fan

Pittsburgh is just a crappier landlocked version of Baltimore and we all know how great Baltimore is.

And does anyone else get the feeling that Ovie hooked up with Crosby's girlfriend with they way that Crosby seems to personally hate Ovie. Even if he hasnt you know Ovie could if he wanted to, he is a big russian machine that never breaks.

Posted by: peteywheatstraw | February 24, 2009 5:14 PM | Report abuse

Crosby is still living with Mario Lemieux yet Cooley is the one that's gay?

Posted by: VegasCapsFan | February 24, 2009 5:15 PM | Report abuse

""nobody in Pittsburgh really cares" about "Caps fans and their inferiority complex," "

a.) Then why the hateful post?
b.) No Caps fans care if the hate is reciprocal. As a Caps fan, I'm fine hating the sh*t out of Pens and their fans and their Crybaby goddess whether or not it's mutual.

Posted by: ThisGuy | February 24, 2009 5:30 PM | Report abuse

Why is Baltimore dragged into this?

We're on your side, you maroons!

Posted by: StetSportsBlog | February 24, 2009 5:36 PM | Report abuse

Stay in your box Baltimore you are barely a step on Pittsburgh, if not for the Bay, crabcakes and the Aquarium, Baltimore would be compared to Camden NJ.

Posted by: peteywheatstraw | February 24, 2009 6:21 PM | Report abuse

Pittsburgh is just glad to have an easy target like the Redskins. It's just too much of a thought process to come up with anything remotely bad to say about the Caps.

Posted by: ccd3m | February 24, 2009 6:28 PM | Report abuse

Hey look, Im from DC but I dont see why we're putting B-more in the same category as that hillbilly s***hole called Pittsburgh. Hell, they probably hate Pitt as much as we do.

And I totally agree with Jon. As much as I hate Flyer fans, I do have a little respect for them. Pen fans? Lets just say Crosby's crybaby attitude represents his fanbase perfectly.

Posted by: cc415 | February 24, 2009 6:30 PM | Report abuse

As a Ravens fan I'd say there is more than a little hate for Pittsburgh going on in Baltimore...

Posted by: Wiked | February 24, 2009 6:43 PM | Report abuse

When your caps win a playoff series,Then you a**hole fans of ovie can talk sh*t, until then shut the f up, because crosby has done that already.

Posted by: ASHLAS1 | February 24, 2009 7:04 PM | Report abuse

we'll shut up when crosby stops crying.

Posted by: pecdec8705 | February 24, 2009 7:12 PM | Report abuse

you guys must love crosby hell that is all you worry about, what dont you worry about making through the first round dumb a**

Posted by: ASHLAS1 | February 24, 2009 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Wow! The maturity of some fans will never cease to amaze me. It's part of sports to talk a little smack. Big Deal! But wow, just wow. Pulling out the homophobic comments - people still do that? Seriously? Bet someone from Pittsburgh will now call me fat (that's the standard male to female insult). Wow.

Posted by: suzannepdc | February 24, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

are you fat?

Posted by: ASHLAS1 | February 24, 2009 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Sadly I have been taking care of a sick gf. Otherwise I would be there defending Cooley. Because Tanner and Chris are good guys when I ordered some stuff from the sight Tanner emailed me personally to ensure it got there.

I am up there now to help out.

I mean they are still pit-blathering but I guess when you have had no work since the internet came into existence thats all they can do.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 24, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

Just wondering how many butts hurt from bumping up and down on the Caps bandwagon.

Listen, old school Pens fans really don't care about the Caps. The new Pens fans that started liking them last year are the ones who talk smack.

True people from Pitt don't care about DC or Baltimore. Sorry to break it to you guys.

Posted by: mmcconn2 | February 24, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

mmcconn2, fair enough.
ASHLAS1, we don't really care about Crosby, we feel like he is overrated and a crybaby as does the rest of the NHL... including his own team according to some reports.
Most Caps fans recognize that Malkin is the true talent on your squad and have a healthy respect of his abilities.
Crosby is good not great, and he acts like he is entitled to special treatment and calls... not really his fault he was pecked to be the NHLs poster boy and pushed into the role. Ovie on the other hand earned it, all his hype he created himself and with little help from the NHL media machine until maybe the last few seasons when they recognized his marketability.

Posted by: pecdec8705 | February 24, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

So what's the target date on a Sidney Crosby/Santonio Holmes/Jeff Reed Photoshop rebuttal?

Posted by: Section117 | February 24, 2009 11:53 PM | Report abuse

If you have ever spent any time with or worked with anyone who is from Western Pennsylvania you would understand all of this. While they have traditional values and are fiercely loyal to their own they also are incredibly stupid.

Posted by: MKadyman | February 25, 2009 8:43 AM | Report abuse

It's funny to see Pittsburgh fans making fun of Caps' attendance. The Caps haven't been last in attendance in the last decade. Pittsburgh has. The Caps never declared bankruptcy. Pittsburgh has.

Posted by: FlyersSuck | February 25, 2009 9:18 AM | Report abuse

"Crosby can't hear Cooley, since he has fame, fortune and popularity clogging his ears"

Didn't Patrick Roy use that same joke like 15 years ago...lame.

Posted by: BradP | February 25, 2009 9:34 AM | Report abuse

"True people from Pitt don't care about DC or Baltimore. Sorry to break it to you guys"

What do you mean "don't care about?"

They all live here because there's no jobs in Pittsburgh.

And the bandwagon fans thing is meaningless comming from a fan of a team whose fans were so bad, the team almost folded up shop to move to the Hockey Mecca known as Kansas City.

Posted by: VTDuffman | February 25, 2009 9:56 AM | Report abuse

you insult all caps fans as bandwagon, then say old school pitt fans don't care, but pens bandwagon fans do.

1) you just admitted that the pens have lots of bandwagon fans (judging from all the hate on your precious pensblog).
2) once again, if you don't care, why post here?
3) the main argument i read from pens fans is "caps fans are all bandwagon fans and know nothing about hockey." so by admitting you have bandwagon fans, you take away from your own argument.

Forget pittsburgh, who cares about that aging steel mill. Does anybody else see that the Klosterman quote is the perfect synopsis of Maryland-Duke compared to UNC-Duke. They can have the nemesis, the Terps want the arch-enemy

Posted by: jpfterps | February 25, 2009 11:05 AM | Report abuse

Cooley's blog had a juvenile post that trash-talked about the Pens and Crosby. What did you expect? The Pensblog community said enough is enough with the obsessing about the Pens and Crosby. So they jobbed the Cooley site. Quite cleverly, I might add. Even got on DC local TV last night about it! Say what you will about the 'burgh (who's doing the trashing talking now?), but Pittsburgh fans are powerful and intense. The DC population is what, 5x that of the 'burgh? You think you could incite that kind of passion here?

Posted by: hockey23 | February 25, 2009 1:39 PM | Report abuse

Remind me again...what team has filed bankruptcy and almost got sold to Jim Balsillie and relocated to the Toronto 'burbs (all during this decade)?

And yet, Pittsburgh- still a steaming cultural backwater (beloved, yet abandoned).

Posted by: jcurrin | February 25, 2009 2:03 PM | Report abuse

Steinberg-- Yeah, I know it's a Pitt-related article, but why single out Western Pennsylvania when the entire state sucks the big one?

Pennsylvania is America's garbage can. You guys can eat me.
