Ross Detwiler, the Caps and Old-School Hockey

When I shared my Web traffic woes with one Nats player today, he told me that he had a Caps hat at home and volunteered to bring it to Lost in Space Coast Stadium for some hockey talk. It's an offer I'm considering.

In the meantime, young left-hander Ross Detwiler was proudly wearing a Quebec Nordiques hat around the Nats' spring training complex yesterday. A teammate then asked him whether he'd had any luck locating a Hartford Whalers hat. Detwiler said he was still looking.

So with my Web traffic in need of a Caps-related jolt, this seemed worth investigating, in convenient question and answer format. Detwiler, as you might have guessed, is a dedicated hockey fan.

Why?

Well, we grew up in St. Louis, watched the Cardinals in baseball season, and when hockey season comes around we'd always watch the Blues games.

Did you ever play?

Just kind of here and there, not really too organized. I worked in an ice arena sophomore year of high school, so I saw a lot of hockey players come in and out. We hosted college games, so I got to see a lot of good hockey, and I became a fan that way.

Any favorite players growing up?

Yeah, Pavel Bure when he played for the Canucks, and then pretty much Brett Hull, Brendan Shanahan and Curtis Joseph, when they were all on those Blues teams. When I was in the fall league this year we lived right across the street from the arena, so we went and caught three or four Coyotes games. I actually saw the Capitals down there; that was the first time I had seen them play.

Oh, really? What'd you think?

I mean, Ovechkin's just amazing. It was a good game, it was fun to watch. There was a few of the Capitals that came out and took BP in 2007 when I was up, and it was fun to see them swinging in the cage.

So what's the thing about collecting old hats?

I don't even know how it started. I always wear hats, and I always wore baseball hats. Can't really wear them any more, so I've got a Blues hat and a Canucks hat. I always wore my Canucks hat last year, just kind of found one online, and then I started looking for the old-time hockey teams.

So what do you have now?

Let's see, Blues, Sabres, Canucks, Oilers, Jets, Nordiques, Capitals...I'm missing one. I'll think of it....

But they're all the old logos?

Not all of them. The Blues have had the same logo throughout. [For the Sabres] the old-school one, with the Sabre and the two crossing swords.

What about the Caps, new one or old one?

The Caps one's weird, it's the newer one with the bird on it and kind of the outline of the Capital.

Yeah, they call it the Weagle. So would you say you're still a Blues fan?

Yeah, still a Blues fan, and they were actually laying the Rangers on Versus, so I got to watch the game the other night at my house. That was nice.

Are you gonna try to pick up the Caps as an Eastern Conference team at all?

Yeah, I've kind of followed them a little more, being in Washington now. And when I'm up there--hopefully when I'm up there, if I'm up there--I'll get to go catch a couple games. Because they're one of the fastest teams out there. It's exciting to watch.

Do you have old-school jerseys too, or just the hats?

I think I have three Blues jerseys, and they're all different, two older ones and then the new one that just came out. Kariya's the only one that has a name on it, the other two are just blank on the back. Let's see, I've got an old-school Crosby jersey, the blue one with the Penguin on the front. And then just the regular Ovechkin jersey. I was looking for one forever, and I finally found one at a mall down here somewhere, same place that had the Crosby one.

What do you think about the people who have a blank jersey and put their own last name on the back?

You know, I kind of see that as ok for younger kids and whatever, but I like the [real] names on them. And if I get a blank jersey I wouldn't put my name on the back of it, because that's kind of something you earn. It's for some people; it's not for me.

You can get Whalers stuff on ebay.

So you're wondering why your traffic is down? Maybe it's because none of the Nats fans knew you were down there? While I appreciate good humor and good writing, I don't frequent your blog because I was sick and tired of your Nats-bashing. So, I was unaware that you were down in Viera posting regularly. And there is nowhere on the Post site that I can find indicating that you're doing so. If it weren't for NatsNut posting over on Chico's blog, I would never have seen this.

And on that note ... GREAT JOB!! I've loved each and everyone of your posts from Viera. Keep it up (I know I will be checking back all the time now).

There's a guy I always see at Nats games wearing a Hartford Whalers t-shirt, maybe he could help him out.

that can't possibly be it. it makes too much sense to be the problem.

It's obviously because the Nationals have no fans and everyone in the DC area hates baseball.

that's GOT to be it. it's the only possible reason.

Might make for some good fodder to ask the guys about superstitions (AKA "routines").

First of all, that Quebec logo was just atrocious. You'd have to be a real fan to put that thing on your head.

But seriously, I can't even tell you how cool it is that we have a media presence who can drop the line, "Yeah, they call it the Weagle" - in stride - in an interview with a pitching prospect.

Now ask him which hat he expects to be wearing first: Winnipeg Jets or the curly W.

Now that I know he has a Crosby jersey (in baby blue, no less!), I will boo him mercilessly.

If he becomes a Caps fan, Detwiler needs to burn the Crosby jersey to prove his loyalty.
