Arenas On His Return

Just saw Gilbert in the hallway of the Verizon Center. He had a large bag of ice (with the Wizards logo) on his knee. The TV folks asked him about Arizona making the Sweet 16, trying to break the ice, so to speak, and coax him into stopping.

"I don't watch," Gilbert said, and kept walking.

As he was going down the parking garage stairs to his car, I asked him about Chris Miller's report.

"It's only true if I play on Saturday," the enigmatic one said. "If I don't play, it ain't true."

I asked if he really told Miller he was playing on Saturday, and he said he hasn't talked to any reporters. Clever man: apparently the message was sent via text. Here's the message, via CSN:

"Ur the first to get the truth. I'm playing Saturday against Detroit. And I'm only playin home games, but I will play in Cleveland. Me and Cleveland fans have this love hate relation."

And here's what interim coach Ed Tapscott said about Gilbert returning tonight:

"No, not gonna go tonight. Again, we've had so little practice time in the last two weeks, we've been playing almost back-to-back-to-back-to-back so many times, that you need practice time. It's extremely unfair to ask people who have not played in a while to go through one or two practices intermittently and then come out and perform at a high level. We've seen the effects of that before, so we want to make sure that everyone gets requisite practice and conditioning time so that when they are able to play, they're able to play fully and with minimal limitations."

I asked him about Saturday, and Miller's report.

"This next Saturday? Again, if we can get the practices in, that's certainly a possibility," Tapscott said. "But not definitive yet. Again, we have some process to go through."

Meantime, Mike Jones at The Times reports that as of yesterday, Gilbert still wasn't sure whether he'd be returning at all this season, while he's apparently told Ivan Carter every variation on his return except "I'll be debuting with the Mystics in July." Would love to get some Vegas odds on the issue.

[UPDATE: Gilbert talks further with both Ivan and Mike.]
