Caps Fans Invade Raleigh

(All photos by Caps Nut.)

After all the computer cells I killed by writing about Pittsburgh fans in D.C., it's only fair to point out that several hundred Capitals fans showed up in Raleigh for Saturday's loss to the Hurricanes. Who says D.C. fans don't travel? The trip was organized by the Caps Fan Club, and these being Caps fans, there was at least one Crosby Sucks jersey, at least one playoff mohawk and at least one red cape.

Also showing up for the pre-game tailgate: Slapshot, Joe Beninati, Steve Kolbe and Brett Leonhardt. The latter, as usual, signing autographs.

The trip was organized with the support of a 'Canes Booster Club, and the seething subplot included a possible playoff meeting between the two squads, when perhaps they'd be less likely to break bread together. But after so many dang stories about Pittsburghers in D.C., and all the people who hate and are hated by Caps fans, this was just a nice sunny day in Raleigh.

In other Caps news, 289, the official design guru of the sports Internet, has a new Ovie shirt out. Trust me, you want it. See below.

Dan,

you should have seen the turnout from the Caps Road Crew as well. We setup at the top of the parking lot (somewhat adjacent to the Fan Club) and had nearly 200 of our own fans, but no Canes fans to worry about. There was organized street hockey, dodge ball, and cornhole games going on. It was quite the scene, not to mention we had Sam on the horn as usual.

I'm sure someone who had a camera will eventually send you some pics to post..

If only the team showed up in force like we did!

GO CAPS!

UGH. This makes me mad. So many Caps fans supporting the team and they play like CRAP against the Hurricanes..

At least I was already too tailgated to have any lasting memories of it.

And next trip the fan club and the road crew should coordinate. That would've been even better to have all of us in the same sections, even though we were close as it was.

It was a very awesome day. I was with the Fan Club group. So far as I know, the Fan Club and the Road Crew do things differently. The Road Crew, from my understanding of things, tends to be rowdier than the Fan Club folks overall, and everyone's more comfortable with things being as they are. Between the RC, the FC and the regular folks in Caps gear we must have had 1000 Caps fans there. Next time I hope the team actually shows up to.
