Maynor Wears Title Belt While Snipping Net

(By Steve Helber - AP)

Hmm, what was that around Eric Maynor's waist as he snipped his piece of CAA championship net last night? Oh yeah, it was his personal championship belt, presented last week. That just has to be the goofiest gimmick going in March Madness--yeah, goofier than the repeat of last year's March Madness vasectomy gimmick. If Maynor doesn't wear his belt to every single NCAA tournament press conference, the VCU sports PR boss (and Nats blogger) should lose his job.

But that apparently isn't the only highlight for the Rams as they wait for their tournament opponent. According to some terrific reporting from SI's Luke Winn, VCU also features a fan who dresses like Rasta Maynor, a fan who dresses like Yoda, and a fan with a massive "Larry Sanders Has a Posse" banner. Plus Sanders. From Winn's entry:

He followed college hoops so sparingly that he was unsure what he was even committing to play. "I didn't know the CAA from the SEC," [Sanders] said, "and when somebody asked me, are you going D-I, I was like, is that the highest division?"

From that dude--who liked art better than basketball--to the championship belt--which actually says CHAMPION in big letters--VCU is a lock to be among the most popular first-round upset choices. More importantly, I'm nearly ready to award the Rams the 2009 Atlantic 11 title, with the accompanying bracelet. (Can't afford a belt.) It would take a massive American upset, or some serious ACC escapades for us not to crown our first-ever non-BCS Atlantic 11 champion this year.

As a VCU student I'm happy to watch my school in March Madness during my senior year.

I only wish VCU could be in a major conference. Richmond is a basketball town, and if VCU were in a major conference, I could only dream what they could be like with stronger recruiting and chances to shine on the national spotlight.

Amen to that. Richmond is the same size as OKC...who now have a pro team. It could totally support a bigger program.

Why is "Win" in quotes on the belt? I think someone needs to read this:
