The Unleash the Fury Couple

(I'm chatting now. Ask me questions. About this, even. Or anything else. Or just revel in the conversation.)

If you've watched any Comcast SportsyNet coverage of the Caps this season, you've no doubt seen the happy couple sitting just a few rows above the ice wearing those "Unleash" and "The Fury" practice jerseys. As a TV image for use in one of those pre-break edits, that's about as good as it gets. It also conveys to the owners one (1) D.C. Sports Bog photo-op each season. Here it is.

So the lucky couple is Susan Duer and William Conway, and they're from Bristow, Virginia. He's originally from Ireland and has loved hockey his whole life. She's originally from the U.S., and just got into hockey within the past year. That's a quick edit, huh, from not-a-fan to one half of Unleash The Fury?

"We kind of went Whoooooooosh," Susan admitted, of their fandom.

So they started watching games together last Spring. Susan bought William season tickets for his birthday. At that point, she had never been to a game. Then they started thinking of what their first sweaters should be. With the big-screen's "Unleash the Fury" montage growing in popularity, he suggested one of them could be "Unleash," and the other could be "The Fury." The response from the hockey neophyte?

"Awesome," she told him. "Do it."

I'll have more on the creation of the actual movie montage at some point this week, and the elevation of Unleash The Fury to unofficial fan motto. In the meantime, these jerseys have turned Susan and William into two of those quasi-celebrity Caps fans, like all their "Crosby Sucks" and "Suck It Crosby" siblings.

"Random people stop us in the street everywhere," Susan told me.

"Standing on the Metro," William said.

"In the giftshop," Susan added.

"My co-workers say, 'Oh, we see you on TV all the time,' " William concluded. "And they don't see my face. They see my shirt."

They had them made on practice jerseys, being economical, but now you don't even have to take that initiative. The in-game retail stores recently started selling actual Unleash the Fury shirts, for a mere $25 or so. Anyhow, this couple's transformation has been complete. Their basement is now filled with hockey jerseys, sticks, photos and posters. Their presents to each other are hockey-related. They've already renewed their seats for next season. William's trying to get custom-made "Puck Philly" and "Crosby Sucks" sweaters to add to his collection.

"These are new ones!" he said, brightening, and lifted up his "The Fury" shirt to show me what was underneath. Him and hers. Should have figured, I guess.

In the first picture, "The Fury" guy looks a lot like Steinberg.

So that explains why they are so obnoxious at games. They don't actually know anything about hockey.

"Susan Duer" looks a lot like Sally Jenkins, except Sally never leaves NYC.

Interesting, maybe you should read or take reading lessons, he has been a hockey fan or should I say "I" have been a hockey fan for years. And as to me being obnoxious maybe you should go to Philly and see how obnoxious their fans are. Anyway I am lover of the game and all fans at least we can agree, flyers suck
