Mike Green and Tom Poti Talk Playoffs

Mike Green in the playoffs. (By John McDonnell - TWP)

What's that? You're stuck at your desk for one more hour, and have decided that you'd really like to pass the time reading more canned quotes about what the playoffs are like, plus watch a video featuring my head and nearly inaudible Capitals fans dressed oddly? Well, this is the place for you, for sure.

"Sometimes as the game goes on, the game slows down a bit, guys get tired," Mike Green told me this week. "But in the playoffs, nobody gets tired."

Which, again, suggests that possibly the regular season doesn't always merit a full expenditure?

"Not at times," Green said. "Yeah, you work hard, but it's a long season. But when you get to the playoffs, it's about passion, and that's what carries you. Even if you are tired, your adrenaline is running so much for your teammates that you don't really get tired. I mean, yeah, you'll come off the ice and huff and puff, but you're ready to go back out there and skate as hard as you can until you pass out. That's just what it's about."

I wondered whether this carries over to off days, or whether the pain comes back on Thursday morning.

"Oh, yeah, probably more," Green said.

"For sure," Matt Bradley later agreed.

"The playoffs is just different," Green concluded. "Everything about it is different."

"I think it's a complete 180, to be honest with you," Tom Poti said a few stalls down. "The electricity and the excitement in the building is pretty special. It's something to cherish, and something you're always gonna remember. Just an exciting time. Finally--not that the first 82 games don't mean anything--but these games just mean so much more. Every play is so important, such a key factor in the outcome of the game, that you can't help but be sharp. For players, it's what we wait for all year, and it's exciting that it's finally here."

I said to Poti what I had said to several other players: that this implied the regular season could sometimes be a drag, for lack of a better word.

"Yeah, there's some down times in the season, where you're kind of like, 'Let's get this over with and get the real games, the real fun started,' " Poti said. "You definitely go through points of that in an 82-game season, but we're all professionals and we make sure we're ready for every game. But for the playoffs, it's just that much more exciting. It's basically the reason why we play."

As for the fans dressed oddly, see below, I guess. Don't bother turning the sound up. The guy in the screengrab said he was impersonating an angry zit, which was nice imagery.
