Ovechkin, Green Dye Hair Red

Pre-red, unfortunately.

Because there really wasn't enough excitement yet in this town about that color....

So Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green went on XM 204 yesterday afternoon to accept their fan-voted "Espo" awards during Phil Esposito and Mike Ross's "In the Slot." The hosts asked Green about his mohawk. Satellite radio magic commenced.

"Yes," Green said, "we shaved up a real mohawk this morning."

"Did you make some color?" Ovechkin interrupted excitedly, while the hosts laughed.

"Ovie, I'm at the hair place right now doing it," Green said.

More laughter.

"I do it already," Ovechkin said.

"You got yours done?" Green asked, at which point it became clear that they were being serious.

I would have just kept quiet and let them keep talking. The hosts didn't exactly understand what was going on, though, so they came back with another question about whether the team was embarking on any playoff insanity together.

"I'll let Ovie answer that," Green said. "Ovie tell them what we're doing for the team, like you, Feds, me, Backstrom....."

"Yeah," Ovechkin said, "me, Feds, Greener and Backstrom, we just make some color in our hair. So I made some red lines, but I don't think you can see right now it's red because I have black hair and it doesn't look like red. So maybe next time I'm gonna put some all red, I don't know. But Feds put some all white (?), and we just try to be together as a team. And some guys don't have lots of hair in the head, but, you know, they're supposed to."

If I were Phil Esposito and Mike Ross, I would have asked about 600 follow-ups, but they moved right on to asking whether Backstrom can grow a beard.

"Little bit, you know, little bit," Ovechkin said.

"He's got like three or four strands now," Green said.

As if it needed to be said, the hosts then asked about team chemistry.

"Really tight," Green said. "Over the last year and a half we've really bonded well and it's really showed on the ice, and the good thing is that we do have a younger team. Guys can hang out together and we have the same interests and. We've just had a blast over the last year and a half, that's for sure."

FWIW, the Espo awards aren't all fan-voted. Actually, there's only one "Fan favorite" award. All the other ones are chosen by the show.
