Crosby Objects to Hats on Ice

(By Toni L. Sandys - TWP)

If you're one of the best hockey players in the world, and you have a potentially undeserved reputation for excessive complaining, and you're asked what you were discussing with a game official following your rival's game-clinching playoff hat trick, you could potentially say, "Oh, it was nothing." Or, if you were feeling frisky, you could venture further afield.

"People kept throwing hats," Sidney Crosby said tonight. "I was just asking if he could make an announcement to ask them to stop. I mean, the first wave came and then I think they were all pretty much picked up, and then more started coming. So for us, we just wanted to make sure we kept kind of moving and kept the game going, wanted to try to get back in it. So wasn't complaining about anything."

Depends on the definition, I suppose. And I can't imagine any rambunctious Caps fans will start preemptively throwing hats on ice Saturday night. As for the stellar Simeon Varlamov, Crosby was suitably effusive.

"I mean, yeah, he's made some timely saves," Crosby said. "I still think we can do a better job of burying the puck and capitalizing on our chances. The difference is a few inches, but he battles and he competes, and there's times where he's out of position but he finds a way to get a piece of his body on it. So as a shooter you have to make sure that you bear down, and we have to really correct that quickly. I mean, there are times when he's kind of swimming in the crease and we've got some loose pucks and we've got to put them in."

Might as well keep this train rolling. Here's Crosby on Ovie and the hat trick.

"When it comes down to it they got a big goal there on the power play when it counted, and that's the difference. I don't see anything else but that. We had opportunities, I mean, the last two games we can honestly say we did some really good things but we made a few mistakes that have hurt us. That can be a good thing to look at as well, knowing that we're that close and these are things that we can easily and change quickly. But we have to do that."

This makes me hate Crosby.

He complains about hat trick hats and he doesn't ever give Varly any respect. Varly gets no respect!

What a whiner. I hate him so much.

Posted by: Ovechwin | May 4, 2009 10:48 PM | Report abuse

Epic. Bylsma just needs to grab him after games by the scruff of the neck (what scruff? He can't even grow a beard), and drag him to the locker room. I can't possibly imagine better bulletin-board material than that, besides a big picture of Kunitz cross-checking Varly in the throat.

Hope they chartered the "Waaaaaaambulance" to cart Crosby back to Pittsburgh.

Good Lord, that is just bizarre. Crsoby's a great player, but he really needs some work on the whining.

Why didn't Clark complain when one hat got thrown onto the ice after Crosby's third?

Posted by: chrisd3 | May 4, 2009 10:50 PM | Report abuse

Chrisd3:

Why didn't he (or Ovie) put it on and skate back to the bench wearing the lonely little hat?

honestly you're supposed to be the 2nd best player in the world and you whine about hats on the ice? seriously Cindy, get over it.

Posted by: TheSuperhoo | May 4, 2009 11:01 PM | Report abuse

Crosby is just an awful human being. He reminds me a little of Bill Murray's character in "Kingpin"; so arrogant, so many deficiencies in his personality, but the media just keeps lapping him up, insisting that he's not only the best player in the game, but a nice guy to boot. BS, he's a tool!!

Posted by: Hatfield223 | May 4, 2009 11:04 PM | Report abuse

Maybe we shouldn't announce when Crosby scores at the Verizon. It distracts from the play on-ice

Posted by: austinsteve | May 4, 2009 11:04 PM | Report abuse

I think you missed the end of his quote - "I mean, there are times when he's kind of swimming in the crease and we've got some loose pucks and we've got to put them in. Oh, and we have to keep cross-checking him in the melon. Turns out that's really effective too!"

Whining must be part of the guy's DNA.

Posted by: WCAPS1 | May 4, 2009 11:10 PM | Report abuse

Steinberg, you write for the Washington Post, why are you conceding to a game 5? Anyway, I'm just gonna go ahead and assume Cindy Crosby has to say this stuff on purpose, to try and be funny. Either that, or he's a mental midget.

What a little whiny piece of crap. In the words of Gary Thorne from the last time Florida was in the finals: Forget the rats- Throw the Hats!

General rule of thumb: despite Bettman destroying the game, hat tricks are still rare. Hats should be throw. Crosby shouldn't get his panties in such a bunch.

*Been there, done that. "Surprisingly" there weren't nearly as many Pens fans on the boards as usual. Can't figure out why....

did anyone watch the interviews? talk about making comments sound worse than they were.

Great dive at center ice by Ovechkin tonight, talk about being a girl. Both players were unreal, but Ovechkin's dive and faking at center ice make a stupid post game comment look pretty mild

Posted by: southhockey | May 4, 2009 11:30 PM | Report abuse

(1) The other comments weren't a slight at Varly or Ovie. Both had stellar games. His comments were about how the Pens played a poor game.

(2) It is amusing to see the Caps bandwagoning since Ovie has joined the NHL. I remember going to Caps-Pens games in the 2001...there were consistently more Pens fans than Caps fans in the stadium.

Yeah, I remember when Attendance was so bad here, they almost moved the team to Kansas City.

SERIOUSLY?! This is amazing. Like it almost seems fake because it's just too good to be true. And to add to it, Crosby got a hat trick and a couple (3 I hear) hats were thrown for him. Think he was pissed at that too? It's like his PR man is secretly working for us... maybe he's russian...

CANNOT wait to see what signs/outfits Caps fans come up with for this....lets get cracking!

I hear Cindy began a petition trying to get the Red Wings' to stop their octopus tradition, citing an allergy to old treasured hockey traditions.

I was a Caps fan when Gary Green was a coach.

Complaining about hats on the ice -- classic whining moment. He has earned his reputation.

You know, I don't mind so much the comments about Varly. He was spectacular, but if he wasn't such an acrobat, he does leave a lot of room at times.

That said, the Caps need to clamp down on the traffic in front of the net. Namely Crosby.

Exciting game for sure, but there are some holes that need to be plugged by the Caps.

I wish Semin would stop taking retaliatory penalties. He's a gifted athlete but not a very smart one.

Posted by: sasha_206 | May 4, 2009 11:41 PM | Report abuse

Crosby's complaint is moronic. The longer the break, the less likely the fans were to continue going nuts. The Penguins should have been milking that gap, discussing matchups, and generally using the delay to their advantage.

Posted by: Chest_Rockwell | May 4, 2009 11:47 PM | Report abuse

Are these the same Pens fans who were there supporting their team with 9,000 in attendance in 2003-05?

Posted by: Sonyask | May 4, 2009 11:51 PM | Report abuse

I can't believe we keep having this stupid argument about "real fans"! You know who is a real fan? The guy I met at the CVS on Saturday. He started talking to me about how great Varly's save on Crosby was and then admitted that it was the first game he'd ever watched and he couldn't wait to see more. Who cares if it's your first game or your 1,000th? Some people need to get a new comeback to "your team just got beat". Seriously.

Posted by: amberlynne | May 4, 2009 11:54 PM | Report abuse

What does he think, Ovechkin has a closet full of hats somewhere? I read somewhere (someone please confirm this?) that the Caps donate the hats to charity.

So until the Capitals organization tells me to quit throwing my hat when a Cap scores a hat trick - and BTW, Crosby, the tradition of throwing hats onto the ice predates you in the world - it started in the 1970s. So shut your pie-hole. I'm sure Penguins fans throw hats for you, too, when you score a hat trick....

Oh yeah - that's been Malkin more than you this season, hasn't it?

Posted by: irockthered | May 4, 2009 11:57 PM | Report abuse

It was great watching Mario Lemieux standing there like a statue grinding his teeth in frustration. Speaking of statue, I guess Gonchar is still wondering how Ovechkin used him as a human shield. I hope Erskine comes back real soon and give Crosby a "special" knuckle sandwich right down his throat to make him shut up. But by openly stating "how lucky" Varlomov is, Sid the "id" must be having Russian nightmares these days.

Too funny. What an idiot Crosby is. Lets really think about what would happen if that announcement was made.... Even more hats would come flying.

I'm so tempted to go to a Pens board and ask them to justify:

1 - Crosby hitting the guy in the pom-poms

2 - Crosby jumping the guy in the
face-off circle

3 - Crosby complaining about hats when
there's a hat trick

In a nice way of course; I really wonder how they still respect him..

southhockey - The PLAYERS voted him the biggest complainer. He got more that 50 percent of the vote and the next guy got, like, 8 percent. The guy whines. It's a FACT! But instead of learning from it and maybe growing as a person or something crazy like that, he just flaps his yap more. He's a talented guy but he's been given the "benefit of the doubt" his whole career because everyone wanted him to be The Next One. Eventually, he's got to SUCK IT UP and SHUT IT! Maybe when Yzerman names him to Team Canada, he can teach the Kid some Captain Manners.

Honestly, its not his fault. Crysby was ditched at a young age and Mario took pity on him. Let him move in his basement(keyword).... So after months of letting the...kinda-sorta great-one coach him....own him....parent him... he has somehow turned out to be a whinning little brat.... Ovechkin on the other hand moved across the world... came to America... I believe Danius Zubris helped him out a bit... How are the steel-workers rallying behing this little whinny kid(I have chosen to hold back most of my favorable adjectives in an attempt to not get erased)...but for god-sakes...Crosby is talented...if he could only shut the **** up!

Normally, a statement like that is true- it's impossible to prove something like Crosby is a whiner. But then Desu comes up with a survey, by players who ARE on the ice with Crosby, and he gets more votes for biggest whiner than every otherplayer in the NHL combined. That's right, out of 690 players Crosby gets more votes than the other 689 combined. Busted! Incontrovertible. Case closed. Guilty as charged!

This is great. I was looking for a reason to hate Crosby and this one's definitely it.

You really gotta be a whiner for other NHL players to call you out in a survey. Most athletes don't even want to get near that kind of a question.

We gotta get Erskine back and tighten up the D in front of Varly so he's not facing 30+ shots per game, and we've got this series. Cindy can go watch Steelers OTAs.

I would hate for Crosby to be on the Caps. He doesn't seem to be a team player and he cant grow a beard! Really you play hockey your supposed to be able to grow a beard and look somewhat ugly/mean. Wow. If Crosby keeps this up, it won't just be fans of Penguins rivals that thinks he's a cry baby. Let him keep it up and maybe the league will start focusing more on OV instead of Crosby. Heck, even on the Penguins message boards I read some Pens fans saying that they think OV is better after last night's game.

Regardless, last night was a great night for hockey. This sport still needs to grow and last night was a big boost. I'm curious to see what the ratings are for game 3.

I love Pens fans. I love Sidney Crosby. Why? It's just a reminder that in another part of the world, there's a sad excuse for a hockey player who manages to forget that he's got a youtube video of him socking someone in the nads. And then there are a bunch of fans who insist that in the face of "adversity" (the technical term for "s*ckiness"), they converge on the opposing team's message boards to f@rt around their enlightened message of team "unity" (the technical term for "dumba$$ness").

Sorry, Pitts fans, you're in our house. What'd you expect?

Btw, I'm hoping this was a joke because for someone whose hockey skills are overlooked because of his immaturity, shows a breakdown in their hockey organization. I almost feel sorry for that nutbuster. Almost.

Caps, take it in 5, please! =)

Posted by: greggwiggins | May 5, 2009 11:05 AM | Report abuse

I really dislike Crosby for all the reasons most non-pens fans do. In a way I understand him, I think. He is a very young man who had been annointed the next "Great One" in Canada from a very young age. He has been hyped by the "Canada is the only place great hockey players come from" North American media. He expected to be the next Gretzky. It isn't working out that way. OV is by far the more exciting, popular, energizing player. Crosby is a highly skilled player but in a very conventional manner. OV does things no one has ever seen before, over and over again. Crosby is having a hard time dealing with that, even to himself, and his comments reflect that. By the way, does anyone else think that, especially with his mouthpiece in, Crosby looks just like the donkey in Shreik?

"so one sentence in a post game comment > diving on the ice and grabbing your face and faking?"

He must have gotten his diploma with honors from the Crosby School of Diving.

If the announcers could even have been heard, asking people to stop throwing hats would have only incited them to throw even more.

And this is the type of player the league wants kids to look up too?

This chump (Crosby) is the biggest baby in any sport right now and I hope The Caps sweep the series.

I want my son to play the game like Ovie and would take away his hockey stick way if he cried like Cindy Crosby.....

Crosby is such a whiner. I say we throw cheese at him during the game on Saturday. Either that or tampons. Oh wow, that would be the greatest. And make lots of signs that ask if he's on his period or PMSing.

There is not going to be a game on Saturday.
Caps in 4!

It seem that Caps fans are more into ripping apart their opponent rather than praising their own team. I'm neither a Pens or Caps fan, but am simply amazed at how immature a large chunk of the caps fans are, and the comments in this blog are good example of that. It doesn't surprise me though, as a large portion of them come out of the woodwork once every ten years when they have a good team to jump on the bandwagon, but probably never played hockey or know much about the inner workings of the sport. They probably don't know of the constant prodding players (and especially captains) give officials during a game for any given reason. No one knew the context of his comments to the officials, if it was in a whining voice as most assume; just as most assume he was against anyone throwing the hats out period(many people stated he was against the hat trick tradition, which is obviously not true if you read his comments, he was talking about the extended delay in the game over). The bandwagon mantality that this team has, and its annoying bandwagon fans are why I simply can't cheer for them even though I've lived in the DC area for the majority of my life. Talk to most people living in DC, who moved here from places like Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago and Boston....that actually still play hockey at places like Reston and Rockville, still cheer for their home teams for like reasons. It's like deja vu from 11 years ago, maybe the Wings will sweep the Caps again, and the people will go back to cheering for the Wizards.

Cindy Crosby = Barry Bonds

More like A-Fraud imo. Self-absorbed ninnies, the two of 'em.

In Russia, hat throws YOU.

We have taken care of Ovie. As a Slav he will know the what has been placed on him the next two games at the civic arena. We fellow slavs were there this weekend to instill the Legend. He will be looking over his shoulder most of the game anytime he gets near the goal. Myths and legends from Slavic lands.

@mikeodigbmx - If Crosby had been going to the officials to get an explanation/protest a penalty, or a no goal call, or something along those lines it would be one thing.

he complained about fans throwing hats after a hat trick. Kindly step down off your high horse and stop making general assumptions about Caps fans. If you have this wealth of hockey knowledge that you seem to think you have, surely you'd know that nothing occurred out of the ordinary with regards to the hats being thrown.

I am also willing to bet that is the first time in league history a team captain has complained about fans celebrating a hat trick. Crosby's complaining and whining is a joke, as was your attempt at holier than thou commentary.

As a Flyers fan im loving every bit of this. All series long we had to hear about our fans crying and whining and now look.....Your captain is crying again. hahahahaha. Go Caps!!!

Attitude is 90% of any success. I guess we can see who has the winning attitude and who has the whining attitude!

Posted by: coopersmom | May 5, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

@SombreroGuy,

I completely agree with you that nothing out of the ordinary occurred during the celebration of the hat trick. I just think it is ridiculous that instead of praising your own team, and celebrating your win...the majority of Caps fans have nothing better to do that rip on their opponent. I also find it ironic that the majority of comments on here are calling Sidney childish with immature childish comments of their own. The pot called the kettle black?

I am not generalizing all Caps fans, I know full well that there have been die hard fans here in the DC area for a long, long time; but to deny the fact that there are many new fans here who have hopped on the wagon without any real knowledge of hockey and its traditions (traditions outside of hat trick celebrations) would be pretty short sighted.

I especially enjoy how my assumptions put me on a high horse but you assume no one, in the history of hockey has ever complained about hat trick celebrations. During games players complain all the time about any number of things to officials, and I wouldn't rule this out as one of the subjects of said complaints. Your assumption is just as much of an assumption as my own.

Immaturity and Bad PR these sound like words to describe a guy who openly admits to taking his car up to 180 mph on DC roads. Before all you fair weather Caps fans starting ripping 87 look in the mirror at your own superstar.

doing dances over your stick and diving is hardly sportsmanship. I like both players but crosby answers a simple question in a press conference and its a big deal while ovechkin can get away with murder. To say there isn't a double standard is insane.

Instead of trying to compare Ovy driving 180 on the highway, maybe if all you fairweather penguins fans actually voiced diplseasure concerning crosby's antics. instead of looking the other way and making excuses for his immature, classless behavior.

Quite a good number of Caps fans were not happy with Ovy's "hot stick" celebration, for instance. Unlike penguins fans, we didn't make excuses. (see penguins fans regarding the nutpunch and cheap shot in the Florida game)

Pot, meet kettle.

Stop acting like Crysby never dives. YOU can't get over the FACT that Crosby's peers voting him the most whiniest player in the league.

See my reply above concerning the hot stick. Unlike most of you penguin fans, many fans were embarrassed by that display. How about showing some integrity and admitting that crosby is a crybaby?

Posted by: Chase4 | May 5, 2009 4:01 PM | Report abuse

Going back to the diving thing you are so obsessed over: Forsberg, of all people, called Crosby a diver. And the fact that he STILL dives doesn't bother you.

Waiting for any pens fan to actually stop making excuses for the biggest "C" in the league.

Posted by: Chase4 | May 5, 2009 4:04 PM | Report abuse

forsberg said it after one play in 2005 when he slashed the dudes skate. Why doesn't ovy get called out for moaning after the semin call in the 1st. that was the most obvious display of crying in the game. its a double standard thats all, 87 isn't a showboat , hes completely vanilla and p.c. in press conferences. he gets criticized for everything, I'm sure caps fans didn't like the ovy celebration, thats great, I couldn't care less about a 2 second celebration. Doesn't change the fact that if crosby did a dance it would be talked about forever and if ovy said he asked about hats on the ice everyone would laugh and just think he is being goofy.

did anyone watch the interviews? talk about making comments sound worse than they were.

Great dive at center ice by Ovechkin tonight, talk about being a girl. Both players were unreal, but Ovechkin's dive and faking at center ice make a stupid post game comment look pretty mild

Posted by: southhockey | May 4, 2009 11:30 PM | Report abuse

Great dive by Ovie? Yeah, Ovie is known for "diving". Never has Ovie had his nose broken, then him get right back out there nail the dude that broke his nose then score a goal immediately after. Yeah, Ovies the girl.....

To mikeodigbmx -

The blog is about Crosby's comments. That is why we are reacting to them the way we are. We have praised our team plenty, and in this particular case we are responding to the subject matter of the blog. I don't think it shows immaturity. I think it shows relevance.

I'd draft Ovie 10 times out of 10 over Andy Samburg. I like his comedy way more than his hockey play. Go Caps!

The NHL does not want the CAPS to win. Not a big fan base in a southern city to support merchandise. The coach looks like uncle fester the only amusing part of it. He was doing some whining in between periods. not the face of the NHL.

lol. The Washington Post Live crew had a great discussion on this. Wise made a reference and said "the crowd is too loud, and you please tell them to quiet down a little bit." haha.

What the heck? That's not right. Caps fans and Flyers fans don't cross paths... you can't be a Flyers fan and a Caps fan, sorry. But I can understand why you love our team so much. But still, I could never even make myself say I like the city itself. But Crosby is making me hate PIT more than PHI.
