Just A Regular Joe

Co-worker Cathy aka Miss Chatter checks in with a truly amazing story concerning Nats closer-in-waiting Joe Beimel.

Sorry to interrupt all the Caps posts (great win last night!), but this was too good to pass up. Joe Beimel may be the most bloggable Nat since Dmitri Young and his black fingernail polish. I can't think of anything cooler than having a little fun with the fans in a sport that often keeps a pretty big cone of silence hovering overhead.

Beimel very nicely answered my deeply probing journalistic questions on The Legend, the trademark robe, and the ballot-stuffing campaign. It turns out the lottery-winning picture that Drew drew was a joke made up by his good friend Erik Krieg in the Legend 3 episode. Drew probably does draw, but he is also Beimel's son -- born in 1997 (just like my son!) -- and that's why he chose that jersey number.

The Robe: "The robe was sent to me from a former teammate, Johnny Gomes. I got on him for getting into a fight on the field and since he felt that he was a baseball player-slash-boxer, he needed a robe with his name on it and sent me one, too. I ended up wearing the robe during our celebrations at Dodger Stadium for winning the division and winning the NLDS. This winter I decided that I should probably send it to troyfromwv because he would be excited to have it and it, and just my way of saying thanks for making last season so fun for me and my family and friends. Plus the robe was stained with champagne and beer from the celebrations. By the way I now have a Nationals robe hanging in my locker that Johnny sent to me a few days ago."

Bobbleheads: "The bobblehead thing was pretty crazy. The fans got to vote for the last bobblehead of the year online, so troy started a campagn and the website [forum not censored, so some PG-13 language] jumped aboard and voted a lot for me. My parents and relatives also were a HUGE part of it and cast a lot of votes. My dad had eight other brothers and they all have a ton of kids, so the Beimel family is huge! In the end I won and they made a bobblehead."

Inquiring minds want to know if the bobblehead comes with tattoos ...

Videos: "The guys in the other videos are friends of mine from my hometown: John "Benj" Benjamin and Erik Krieg. I showed Benj the original video and he was like, "We are making one right now! And you're going to be in it!" So we did it, and we couldn't stop laughing. Krieg just made his video on his own after he saw ours. All of the YouTube stuff has been really fun to see and be a part of. I never thought it would blow up the way that it did. I'm just a regular guy that likes to have a good time and can appreciate someone with a good sense of humor."

Beimel looks forward to returning to the mound tomorrow after "a long boring two weeks." Dodger Fan Mike B. emailed me to express enthusiasm for Beimel's return to L.A. and said if the Nats do end the Dodgers' streak, he hopes Beimel is on the mound to record the final out. Yes, Mike, I'd be happy with that too!

Have you seen that a group of Red Sox fans are promoting the idea of voting for Lastings Milledge as an All-Star? I say instead of getting defensive about our last place team, we buy into the idea and run with it. What would be funnier than seeing AAA Blastings Thrilledge represent the Nats?

I had heard of that - Mets fans kind of had the same idea. You know "Catherine" (my real name) means 'pure', so I have a hard time bringing myself to consider smudging the all star voting like that. OTOH, the devil on my shoulder (I am a Gemini - split personality and all) thinks it would be pretty entertaining... So I'm going neutral on that one!

Enjoy your time with him, he's a great guy. It's rare for a player today to acknowledge his fans, that's what makes him a Legend to me.
