Nationals Bobblehead Fail

Names have been spelled wrong on uniforms. Names have been spelled wrong on bats. So yeah, as an ironic nod to the past, the Nats will naturally stuff a few Rossevelt bobbleheads into their official merchandise emporiums, daring the world to think they're serious. They're not serious, world. They're just messing with you now.

Anyhow, everyone in NatsTown remembers the friendly little hint for how to spell Roosevelt. It's just like the crowd at most D.C. sporting events--twice as many O's as you think there should be.

My source on this one was loyal Post reader Joanne Richcreek, whose eyes were sharpened while working as a newspaper copy editor--"sort of a curse and a blessing," she said.. She had no intentions of buying a $30, extra-large Teddy bobblehead at the store behind section 131 this weekend, but the Rossevelt thing made it irresistible. And, she notes, she purchased this on the day of Ross Detwiler's second start. Get it?

So maybe there was some sort of sly winking going on, like if the Nats started selling Bratworst, Done jerseys and New Error hats.

The actual bobblehead itself says, simply, "Teddy," but the large sticker on the box was hard to miss, and all the extra-large Teddy bobbleheads were similarly mis-adorned. I would say that, unopened, this is an instant collector's item, except at this point the only collector's items are the things spelled correctly. Don't forget, Spelling Bee, Wednesday and Thursday, Grand Hyatt. Figure on a final between Kavya Shivashankar and Stan Kasten.

Still and all, the Rossevelt bobblers are probably less offensive than the Oriole-colored Nats hat, shown on the broadcast and captured by Mister Irrelevant. As one commenter noted over at Nats Journal, "Why not just wear a sign stating 'Please spit on me.' " Anyhow, at least the "W" seems to be spelled correctly.

Nothing says "Memorial Day" like misspelling the name of a United States President. Bravo, Nationals. Bravo.

well if they only hire people that grew up in the DC school system then it all makes sense...

MNMNT,

You are an idiot.

Majestic Athletics of Easton, PA screwed up the jerseys (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4087695) and Dinger Bats of Ridgeway, IL screwed up the bat.

How are the public schools in Easton and Ridgway?

Next time try and use your minimally functioning brain instead of making racist generalizations.

StantonPark,
Last time I looked, when you are an organization/company that order products, especially giveaways; you get samples and approve before moving forward. Someone obviously didn't do that from the Nats organization. It does have the Nationals logo on it, does it not? You get typos from companies like this all the time, and they print what is given to them. The manufacturers don't sign off on the final product. The customers aka the Nats do.

Since you are too narrow-minded to look past that fact I feel like I have to explain it to you.

Don't make me look back but what was the reading level of eight graders in DC a year or two ago? Do you get the correlation now? Or are you too dumb to make that connection?

Commenting about how bad the DC school system has what to do with racism? You idiot. Do you also cry rape when someone brushes your arm?

Also, in addition to that, this is from a 2007 article:
"Thirty-six percent of D.C. residents ages 16 and over are currently functioning at the lowest level of literacy, according to a report released last week by the State Education Agency.

The lowest level of literacy is defined by the State Education Agency, as people who "can perform no more than the most simple and concrete literacy skills." According to the report, over 170,000 people in the District function at this level of literacy."

And also, the bats and the jerseys, who was supposed to doublecheck them and make sure they were done right? Three mistakes, and sure, blame the three different manufacturers, right? hahas. Given the facts, nothing I said was racist and you are a big dummy.

Thanks for making my day.

I used to work in pro ball, you get proofs for everything, including the boxes. The job is in the hands of the person with the team to check EVERYTHING. Everything including the small print on the bottom of the box and the coloring. I think I still have a few proofs of projects I did laying around somewhere. It's not uncommon to have three or four proofs come through before everything gets done correctly.

mmnmt: "Given the facts, nothing I said was racist and you are a big dummy. Thanks for making my day.Posted by: MNMNT"

I wouldn't know about racism, but your arguments don't make much sense.

The persons who manufactured the hats, bobbleheads, etc, are most likely NOT products of the DC school system. Neither are the Nats' FO personnel who vetted any samples (if indeed the company sent them any to vet). So the whole episode is likely the fault of people who didn't go to public school in the District, which renders your remark, well, flat.

mnmnt: "Don't make me look back but what was the reading level of eight graders in DC a year or two ago? Do you get the correlation now? Or are you too dumb to make that connection?"

Hopefully you meant 8th graders. It's my guess that no DC 8th graders were involved in the making or approval of any of the aforementioned products (at least, let's hope they weren't -- I'd rather they were in school).

mnmnt: "Thirty-six percent of D.C. residents ages 16 and over are currently functioning at the lowest level of literacy, according to a report released last week by the State Education Agency."

What state would that be?

Once again, your argument assumes that all those DC residents are products of the DC school system. It's a certainty that many of them are not. So who's school system do we blame for their difficulties?

mnmnt: "Given the facts, nothing I said was racist and you are a big dummy."

The facts don't establish racism. There are alternate explanations. Perhaps you were just trying to be funny, and failed. Perhaps you are not a very logical person by nature. Perhaps you are a product of an inferior educational system.

Or perhaps you are indeed a big dummy.

Lots of anger out there, but thanks MNMNT and Samson for producing such boring text that now I'm ready for a good Memorial Day Nap.

MNMNT is absolutely correct in his assumptions! It is a shame that the clueless stantonpark and samson151 are berating him for calling out the public schools in DC. Funny how any mention of intellect is immediately taken as racism. Nowhere in his post does he mention the appalling scores of minority students!

It was a joke and for someone that has nothing to do but analyze blog comments, wow, good luck at life. and good luck at reading. i got better things to do then to argue with a bunch of sensitive crybabies.

and if you couldn't make the co-relation, then that's not my fault. three typos from three vendors is their fault? and not the Nats.

eighth graders not being able to read. people hired at the Nats apparently can't either. it's not that hard. and apparently you guys can't either.

Didn't accuse mnmn of being a racist -- just (possibly)a Big Dummy, based on the evidence of his silly post. You'd be in the same category.

Good luck rooting for your Nationals. Stealing O's colors, and misspelling bats, jerseys, giveaways. Does anyone even watch the baseball games; or do they just go because they got nothing else to do, or want a good excuse to get drunk? Maybe they should take some English classes instead and pay attention to Vocab day.

Okay, if I were you, I think I'd stop criticizing other people's education. The above makes it clear you're living in a big glass house in that respect.

Steven for Stephen and Strassburg for Strasburg.

Geez, what have we got, Illogic School meeting today? What does traffic have to do with skinheads? On the other hand, a joke about the DC school system can be racist, depending on what the joker involved was attempting to make fun of.

I prefer to think it was dumb rather than racist.

So lighten up yourself, CalHoochie.

I normally would never post something like this, but given the subject matter, I can't resist. MNMNT, stantonpark PWNED you!

Also, the stealing Orioles colors really made me laugh. One look at that "W" and you can obviously tell that was sold from the game guy who sells fake Oakleys after the game for $5.

It was the cap for Hendrix College, who are the Warriors. The school colors are Orange and Black. They only kept it for one year, as it’s ugly as sin. There’re only around 40 out there, so I wouldn’t be worried about seeing one again. Most of them are in Arkansas or Texas, and the one in the picture’s back home in Georgia now.

If it's any solace, the Nats aren't the only ones who goof up this stuff.

In 1997, I went to a game at Fenway Park, and one of the memorabilia stands sold miniature historic Bosox banners; one of them read, "1913 World Series Champions." There was only one problem -- the Philadelphia Athletics won the Series that year.

The people involved in arguing about this on a message board is final proof that how & why the Nationals will never have a decent following! It is the Nationals fault why all these misspelled items made it to the public's eye. There is no way on Earth any of these incidents should have made it that far, someone should have noticed before it reached that point. Why couldn't Zim or Dunn notice the jerseys they put on were missing a letter? The Nationals do hire a lot of people from DC's public school system, they have to, that's all that is available here. They are the worst workforce in America - FACT! DC is the worst public school system in America - FACT! The Nationals & their fans are a joke - FACT!

Dan, I watched the video of you interviewing Erin Andrews. It was worth it just to hear her hand slapping up against her, uh, hips. Good stuff.

3veritas, without a doubt, Detroit PS blows DCPS away in every facet when it comes to ineptness. Not even close. And the Nats don't hire many, if any, from DCPS. Their staffing company they hire to staff the concessions is one thing. The franchise itself? Get a grip. I graduated from a Big Ten school and the team told me to take a hike. And I live three blocks from the stadium. Maybe that's why...

Posted by: MACCHAMPS04 | May 28, 2009 10:59 PM | Report abuse

MACCHAMPS04, I worked for the concessionaire last year, yes you're right they do hire those people, but the concessionaire is an extension of the organization. That's how it works, I've worked for over 6 pro sports organizations, I know. And b/c I worked closely w/ people in the front office (or as the Nats call it "executive office", b/c they have elitism issues) I know that some of those employees are straight from the DCPS. It really is fact that DC has the worst public school system in America, look it up, graduation rate, rate of illiteracy, & of course........wait for it........drop out rate.....wait for it......due to teen pregnancy. And of course teen pregnancy has always been proven to occur in poorly educated areas, therefore, DC public school system is a negative feedback cycle in & among itself. Detroit crime rate is worse if that makes you feel better, but if you went to a big 10 school why is your name MAC - Mid American Conference - CHAMPS04? If you're talking football you may have went to Toledo? If you're talking basketball you may have went to Western Michigan?
