Pittsburgh Media: Still Chippy

Svrluga and I cruised into Pittsburgh air space just in time for some 10 a.m. sports talk radio. The show began with an observation that if any team could blow a 2-0 series lead to the Penguins, it was the Caps. Then they said that Washington's new fans--"nouveau riche," they called 'em--probably don't even know the history.

Then they referenced a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review story this AM about anthem singer Jeff Jimerson, who some fans believe to be good luck. From the story:

While the perception is the Penguins fare better when Jimerson performs, the numbers are mixed. Since last year, the Penguins have a .694 winning percentage (34-15-6) when Jimerson sings and a .718 clip (28-11-2) when someone else takes the stage.

With good luck like that, who needs curses? Anyhow, the chippiness isn't limited to the radio crusades against nouveau riche hockey fans. Remember Maryland native Jory Rand, he of the "bad karma will smite the Caps since they deny free soda to media members during the daytime hours" blog? Well, he's back today, focusing on something lots of media members were actually grousing about: key figures from both teams talking to the media at the same time, some in hard-to-reach locales. The above photo was Bruce Boudreau addressing the media. He was hard to reach.

Here's Jory's latest complaint:

Another head-scratching move by the Capitals PR staff who decided to scrap the customary post-practice press conference with the head coach and stars, opting rather to stick Bruce Boudreau just outside the Caps dressing room before their practice, during the Penguins practice, just as their locker room was opening to media....

Back to the Caps, who pulled head-scratcher #2 for their Alex Ovechkin press conference after practice. Rather than bring him to the nice, spacious podium with it's multiple audio hookups for the 50 members of gathered media with at least 10 tv outlets, a dozen radio outlets, all looking for audio and video designated for instances just like this one, the Caps PR stuck him on a riser in a hallway outside the Caps locker room What makes this the most comical is it was no less than 100 feet from the podium itself! It's almost as if they're attempting to make covering them as difficult as possible. Needless to say the gathered media from Pittsburgh, Washington, Canada and Russia weren't too pleased.

Not that I'm on the payroll, and lots of people seemed irritated, but there is this:

The Washington Capitals media relations staff is the 2007-08 recipient of the Dick Dillman Award for the NHL's Eastern Conference, given annually to the team judged to be the best in media relations by the members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association (PHWA).

Ah, well. It wouldn't be a best-of-seven series without controversy, I suppose, even of the riser-vs.-podium variety. In any case, here's one area in which the Caps are clearly deficient: Penguins water. "Enhanced with minerals for taste." As Ovie would say, that's sick. No Crosby image, though.

What a whining little piece of crap.

Is Jory one of Sidney's parents?

It'd almost be worth Brashear taking another suspension to shut Rand up.

wow. almost missed my chance to call it "whine flu"

Caps press scrum photos are a little like playing "Where's Waldo?" except with out favorite web guru-turned goalie star for one night.

WTF is wrong with Pittsburgh? Put your big girl panties on and deal with it!

Then they said that Washington's new fans--"nouveau riche," they called 'em--probably don't even know the history.

My guess is pittsbrugh radio jocks don't really know what "nouveau riche" means.

What the hell is in that water, tears from thousands of babies? Don't drink it, Dan! You'll start complaining about getting paid to do a job MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WOULD KILL FOR!

Posted by: amberlynne | May 6, 2009 3:14 PM | Report abuse

Is that what they do with all the tears?

I'd much rather the Pens media fan base were whining rather than crowing. Far from the whole Pittsburgh blue-collar theme, these guys, and an awful lot of Pens fans, are acting like the guilded guard of self entitlement who have problems breathing the same air as the troll upstarts from DC.

they'll be lots more water to bottle when they have to melt the mellon arena ice on saturday morning.

What has happened to the media in these series? New York and now Pittsburgh media have taken the place of the fans when it comes to whining and complaining. I'm sure New York fans would have been much better off and better represented if their media hadn't intervened. Now Pittsburgh media is doing their team and fans no favor. Nobody was talking about Pittsburgh's recent attendance and financial problems. All the Washington media wanted to bring up was the Skins game, but Caps fans came out. Pitts media could have been using the same thing. They missed an easy opportunity.

After you heard that did you push the DJ over and then rub his face in the sand box?

It's the Crosby Effect. Everyone around him now has that whining trademark. First, the hats. Then, Cooke and Bylsma saying Sasha tripped Cooke on Ovie's PP goal. Staal says there are illegal picks for Ovechkin. Fleury and others, one being Crosby, say Ovechkin has an illegal stick. We can't forget the wonderful reporters and writers for Pittsburgh. Complaining about soda fountains and standing on a podium versus outside the locker room. Pittsburgh isn't "Steel City." It's the City of the Abundant Whiners. Please, put your Pampers on and act like big kids.

Is this all you people in D.C. do all day is blog about some radio hack that no one listens to in the 'Burgh? No wonder nothing of substance ever gets done inside the beltway.

Your newly adopted Caps (since no one went to the games until this year) will follow Caps history and start the choke job tonight. Think of the money you'll save on playoff tickets....

Posted by: harrythewhale | May 6, 2009 4:43 PM | Report abuse

I am just hoping for a good game. This is not the same caps team that lost over and over again to the Pen's, and this is not the Jagr/Super Mario Led Pen's either. Losing to Pittsburgh at home would not be a choke. This is what happens in the playoffs. If the games play to form I am happy with winning four games at home and letting the Pen's fans have fun with their team winning at home also. Of course if Varlamov stands n his head and steals one tonight, or if a few of those post ringers make it behind Fleury, that would be ok too. LETS GO CAPS!

@ harrythewhale:

Glad you could take a moment to hop of the whaaaaaaambulance rolling through Pittsburgh now to join us!

Yinz wouldn't know a pahr play if it bit your leg. Any more of this "chirpy" trash talk and we'll unleash Mark Madden on yuz.

they can kiss my "nouveau riche" arse and be thankful for the privilege.

Posted by: gatsu | May 6, 2009 6:34 PM | Report abuse

"whine flu" is a good one, DC media should run with it.

Posted by: gatsu | May 6, 2009 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Seriously Pittsburgh is closing in on Dallas as the worst fans in the country. There's a reason there are so many Steelers fans that live in DC... Pittsburgh SUCKS!!! If you dont like the Caps or the Skins get out of our city, we dont like you. Pack your families up and head back to the coal mines and complain about black lung.

Posted by: murphyz | May 6, 2009 6:49 PM | Report abuse

murphyz for cryin out loud there are no coal mines in Pittsburgh. And yinz don't even have a dialect. Hell, you don't even have a *state* ! To make matters worse, you have the only team in MLB which makes the Pittsburgh Pirates look better than, oh, Dick Cheney in drag.

Any self respecting place oughta have a dialect. That, a good fried fish sandwich, a tartar sauce without sweet pickles in it, and a lot of neighborhood bars is what makes a place worth living in.

I'm sure that every displaced yinzer stuck inside that horrible beltway of yours dreams of the day he or she can go home.

If nothing else, they miss the potholes ;)

Go Pens!

In 50 years of sports watching, I have never seen all the constant whining and complaining from the Pissburgh Penguins and now their media. What a bunch of wussies.

Jory wasn't that good down here in Richmond. How did he get another job?

Posted by: Randy_Hawkins | May 7, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Did you really have to ask, Randy_Hawkins?
Richmond + Central/Southern Virginia > Pittsburgh

"And yinz don't even have a dialect."
"Any self respecting place oughta have a dialect."
Dialect, I don't think that word means what you think it means.
