The YouTube Legend of Joe Beimel

beltwayjoe.jpg

Co-worker Cathy aka Miss Chatter checks in with a truly amazing story concerning Nats closer-in-waiting Joe Beimel.

(Excuse me while I cartwheel through the bog avoiding getting stuck in the muck while shouting Woohoo!! Checking name at bottom of post - woohoo!!)

Ok, now that I've gotten that out of my system, moving on to the topic at hand. Steinz encouraged me to add Nats-related goodies to the Bog a while ago, but I never felt I came up with material up to Bog snuff until Saturday night. Unlike other D.C. sports teams, the Nationals just don't seem to have quirky players willing to let that quirkiness hang loose. Now they have Joe Beimel, a left-handed reliever signed to a one-year contract a couple weeks before the 2009 season began. Beimel's addition to the team was encouraging enough with his thus far team-leading 1.23 ERA (until he went on the DL, of course). The nugget he dropped Saturday night proved even more valuable.

When I met Beimel at the annual fundraiser gala for the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, he and his girlfriend suggested I Google "The Legend of Joe Beimel" to discover a YouTube fan cult of sorts. Being a good blogger, I did. I found troyfromwestvirginia's profile and watched his original and most recent tributes to Beimel and posted a short story.

Apparently I didn't dig deep enough, having only scanned the titles of the rest and gathering there was a fan movement about a bobblehead giveaway with the Dodgers. It was the weekend, I was feeling lazy. Mike B. from Dodger Blues sent me an email with some background on "The Legend" and expanding on the story (as well as the image above). More investigation was clearly in order, especially after learning Joe Beimel was part of the video responses....

Lots of snickering and laughing in the background of this first reply, The Legend of Joe Beimel Part 2 by "jjbenj". Then suddenly at the end, Beimel himself makes a cameo! Whoa!

The Legend Continues... 'jakkpot', who it turns out is a good friend of Beimel's, posts The Legend of Joe Beimel 3 "became a Devil Rays fan - don't like to admit that one. Joe Beimel was there..." Golden! (I'm not sure what those flashes of images are during a couple spots). Beimel does not appear in this video, but it's relevant, particularly for the next video.

And the best one, again by jakkpot. The Video of the Ballad of the Legend of Joe Beimel.

So legend has it (according to Mike) that Troy from WV's original YouTube tribute to Joe Beimel was received with many guffaws and rib shots. Troy stuck up for himself and took it. He thought Legend 2 was made to make fun of him and no one was quite sure the cameo was the *real* Joe Beimel (it was). Since then it's all love and kisses between Troy and the Dodger Blues folks and they all teamed up to stuff the ballot box with the Dodgers to produce a Joe Beimel bobblehead. It worked!

Joe Beimel is so cool, he even mentioned his odd fans in an ESPN Mag story. Gotta love a player who engages with his fans -- through YouTube even! Innovative! I may need to get a Beimel jersey. Too bad it's only a one-year deal. Coincidentally, his slated return date from the disabled list is on May 6. The first day of the Nats-Dodgers series in L.A.

This has been all over the blogs for at least a year, hasn't it? Troy from WV is definitely not new...

I'm sure it has been (Troy's first video is from 2008) and certainly with Dodgers fans, but the it's new to most of us here in DC.

The comments on Youtube aren't too nice to Beimel. Maybe this guy isn't exactly a fan favorite...

Miss Chatter, Joe Beimel is a left-handed reliever. Which, in the baseball universe, means "quirky" is to be expected. It may even be genetic.

The Legend of Joe Beimel hit the message boards the day he was signed, but it's new to most Bog readers.

As far as finding Bog worthy items about the Nats, how about the Nats marketing department making threats and demanding restitution from DC101 based on comments made by Elliot in the Morning, or how about the family of Walter Johnson boycotting the statue unveiling? A good portion of Steinberg's posts are based on interviewing wacky fans, plenty of people hanging out at the Red Loft with lots to say about the state of NatsTown. (I guess these items would not be well received by the Nats.)
