Maryland Dropout Wins WSOP Event
With local sports being what they are, we'll take champions where we can find them. (Hence, the sudden surge in College World Series coverage. Yay Cavs.)
That's why we should all take a moment to celebrate Brock Parker, the Silver Spring native and Maryland dropout who yesterday won the $2,500 Six-Handed Limit Hold'em event at the World Series of Poker, topping Daniel Negreanu to win about $225,000. Silver Spring natives and Maryland dropouts now have approximately as many WSOP bracelets this month as the Nationals do wins.
Parker, a poker pro who had never before won a WSOP event, spoke to the dearly departed Sunday Source about his profession in 2004, explaining that he got into the sport in '98, when he was 18 and Rounders became a hit among his friends.
I was going to the University of Maryland, but I stopped after a year because I wasn't doing well. I was playing too much poker. At first, my parents didn't like it at all. My mom still doesn't like it much. But once they saw me making money, they respected it a little more. Honestly, though, I don't have big plans for the future. I just want to play....
This year I went to Bermuda, Aruba and Vegas. I'm thinking about going to St. Maarten in a couple of days. People are like, "Oh, you get to go here and there!" But I've gotten jaded. It's stranger now for me to be home in Silver Spring than to go on the road for a couple of months. I'll probably move out west soon -- that's where all the big tournaments and casino card rooms are.
All the stars get jaded, don't they? Anyhow, add Parker to the list of Springbrook alumns gone big-time--Shawn Springs and Folarin Campbell spring to mind--and we can officially take a 30-minute pause from bemoaning the sad state of D.C. sports. Now someone just tell me when the parade down Pennsylvania Ave. is scheduled.
