Clinton Portis Explains His Blond 'Do
Earlier this month, some photos surfaced of Clinton Portis, blond hair, blond beard. Seemed like it would be quite the training camp sensation, except Portis had gone back to black in time for the start of camp.
"Too much attention," he explained today, if you can believe that.
[Luckily, for a third straight year, Mike Sellers showed up at training camp with a dyed beard, so at least there's that. See below.]
And why did Portis go blond in the first place?
"Why did I go blond?" he repeated. "I just felt like doing something different. You know, I think even with that, from what I hear, now I'm gay? I don't think there's a woman in the United States of America that would say I'm gay. So, you know, I don't hang around men, I don't live a private life, there's constantly people around me. You know, I did it because that was something that I felt like doing. At the moment it was like, 'Ohhh, I want to do something weird and different,' and that's what I did, I dyed my hair blond. You know, it wasn't an attention seeker. I actually was out of the country, I left the country after I did it, so I wasn't even over here once I did it. So it was just an experiment."
He said when he left the country, it was to go to Berlin. I asked why.
"Just to see the Berlin Wall," he said.
There was tons more from Portis, much of which will appear elsewhere on this site, but Portis also talked at length about Jim Zorn's decision to let the veterans stay at home during camp.
"I think it's huge," he said. "I mean...it's football. You've been doing the same thing, Pop Warner kids do it to grown-ups, so you can't make football harder or tougher than it is. And giving us the opportunity to have enough respect for us to go out and do right...you know, not trying to monitor us all night, [not having] curfew. You got some guys that's married, want to lay beside their wife, some guys want to see their kids, but having curfew and sitting up in the dorm room and being miserable, you don't get no phone reception, you've got to go to sleep, the air out....
"So I think giving you the opportunity to just stay home and be responsible, I think that allows the team to grow up. Because it's the responsibility on you. We asked for it, we got it, now all of the sudden you don't want to lose that privilege. You go out and you do the things that's required. You know, you not gonna go out and get drunk, and you're not gonna be in the club and somebody see you around and you got camp the next morning. So you go home, you eat, you go to sleep and be here on time."
[As for Sellers, this is new since Monday, when he went to WWE without the blond. And when Miz, the wrestler, started taunting the Skins as a group.
"He was staring right at Mike Sellers, and I was like that's the one guy he really don't want to get mad. I told him, he could be a wrestler himself. His name would be Big Barbecue. I was like, all right Mike, hold back. It was actually funny though.]
