Clinton Portis Loves Marko Mitchell

(By Pablo Martinez Monsivais - AP)

It was Marko Mitchell Appreciation Day at Skins camp, starting with teammate applause after he made a catch in traffic against Carlos Rogers and peaking with Clinton Portis's post-practice comments.

"I think we got a couple key surprises," Portis said, in his final training camp report. "Hey, I need y'all to pump this up on TV, Marko Mitchell is killing Carlos Rogers in practice. I'm talking about, he can not stop him. So y'all make sure y'all pump Marko up on TV, because Carlos is in trouble. He in trouble. He ain't stopped him yet this whole camp."

"Portis just talking," Rogers told Comcast SportsNet's Kelli Johnson. "We could be in cover 2 or something, he catches a ball in my area - he caught it on me? [Portis] just want to talk today."

"Clinton Portis, I look up to him, he's a well-known guy, good attitude and everything, so coming from him and some of the veteran guys, that means a lot to me," Mitchell said. "I just go out there and play my position, catch the ball. I don't look at who I caught more balls on, who I'm doing this and that to."

At some point, Portis and Rogers apparently began betting on what would happen the next time Mitchell ran a route on Rogers. The corner claimed he broke it up.

"That's my point exactly," Rogers said.

"He killing him," Portis disagreed. "They keep trying to fight him. He ain't backing down. He done dogged Smoot, he dogged D Hall, now he making an example out of Carlos."

"Any time I catch one, Carlos and Clinton going at it, I don't know what kind of thing they got going on," a confused Mitchell said. "Only thing it can do is make me much better, make the guys play me even harder....I'm a rookie; growing up, I seen these guys on TV, seen these guys making all these different type of plays. So now that I'm getting an opportunity to go against these guys every day in practice, it's just a privilege to me."

At least two of these men were joking about this, and when they turned serious, they actually had good things to say.

"We like him, he's a competitor," Rogers said of Mitchell. "He always wants to come out and compete. We like a guy like that."

"I think Marko's just coming on strong," Portis said. "He's that addition that we need, along with Malcolm and Devin. We were looking for a surprise, and I think he's it."

"I'm usually the type of guy that talk a lot, but I'm a rookie, so I don't have room to talk right now," Mitchell said. "Only thing I'm doing is just going out here to show these guys that I can play. They can talk to me, I probably won't say nothing back."

Then he remembered Smoot.

"I give Fred a little look and a little wink or whatever," Mitchell admitted. "Make him mad."

I'm truly hopeful that Jason is still here when these three wide receivers grow up

they could really be dangerous

I had the honor of teaching Marko Mitchell math in high school. I watched him on the field, on the basketball court, inside and outside the classroom setting. He will keep coming!! He will never quit! I only wish that Redskins Fans knew what I do! The desire to achieve is so great. Marko wants to make it--he wants to make it for everyone who came from those little "one red light" towns. When you fight hard every Friday night on the field and it's a 'HAY' field-YOU WANT IT! He will keep working hard to learn the program. Marko Mitchell is here to stay!

The Redskins drafted smart with Marko. All the "experts" missed him. If you think he is good, take a closer look at the Nevada Wolf Pack...they are stacked with talent and have one of the best QB's in the nation.
