Chad "Rhino" Rinehart's Nickname
Bringing the fun back, Part I
What, you're wondering, is the proper nickname for potential new starting guard Chad Rinehart?
Mike Sellers had a nice suggestion--"Baby Got No Butt," if you're curious--but the proper nickname is definitely The Rhino. Rinehart has been almost unanimously called that in the media room since midway through last season, and center Casey Rabach said teammates refer to him as "Chaz Rhino Rinehart IS Figure Skating," a Blades of Glory reference that may or may not be Rinehart's actual nickname.
"Rinehart's an awful lot of syllables, so Rhino kind of flows off the tongue a lot easier," Rabach said.
I pointed out that technically, according to AP style, the two names have the same number of syllables. Rabach agreed, but said he still preferred Rhino.
And the man himself? Implausibly, Rinehart said he's never really had a nickname; "not that I can really think of, no," he said. He also said he's heard the Rhino thing only sporadically in his athletic career, which is nearly impossible to imagine.
"I know my dad used to be called that," he said. "It's better than being called other things. So yeah, it's definitely a good nickname."
Then I went to talk to Edwin Williams, another potential candidate for the right guard slot, to ask if he had any nicknames. First, though, we talked about his football heroes growing up.
"I loved Chris Samuels," Williams said, maybe 20 yards away from the actual Chris Samuels. "Shhhh," he added.
See, Samuels was drafted by the Redskins when Williams was in the 8th grade, and the rookie said when he first joined the team, he wanted to ask Samuels and all the other veterans for their autographs. Also, he said he still does.
"But I'm kind of part of them now," he pointed out. "People are starting to know my name, though, Clinton called me Edwin the other day. That was cool. I didn't know he knew my name."
Anyhow, does Williams have a nickname?
"Smoot wants me to be in his Bird Gang, and he calls me the Black Crow sometimes," Williams said. "But all crows are black, I think."
Hold up, Bird Gang?
"His stupid rap group thing," Williams said.
Oh, right. Fred Smoot has started a stupid rap group thing. Ok, more on that in a minute.
