Holy Hell: Bruce Boudreau Hates Cheese
I've always been partial to Bruce Boudreau, as both a coach and a media subject. As a coach, he's honest and he wins. As a media subject, he's cooperative, funny, smart, quotable, and unique.
But then things went sour faster than fresh ricotta in the back seat of a '74 Olds. My soft spot for cheese is softer than a ripe Camembert in August heat; I made my living with the stuff for 18 months. My tales of Italian cheese helped me move into the Internet permanently. Tony Kornheiser calls me Cheese Boy. Readers still ask me for cheese recommendations fairly regularly. And then, I was subjected to this Lindsay Czarniak interview with Boudreau, in which he discussed his food peculiarities.
"I've never had a cup of coffee, in my life," he began, which is odd enough in itself. "I've never had peanut butter in my life. Never had mustard. Never had relish. Listen, this is the biggest one though, I HATE cheese. If I find that there's cheese mixed with it, in it, I will not eat it. even if I've already eaten half of it and I've loved it, I will stop eating that thing right away. I don't know what it is. There's a restaurant in Indiana, I don't if it's around here, it's called Cheddars, and I will never go in there because it has a cheese-flavored name. So how stupid is that?"
No comment. I'm too stunned to respond.
(If you care more about hockey than Havarti, Boudreau also talked about the Game 7 loss to the Penguins, which he apparently still hasn't watched.
"I've tried many times," he said. "I haven't made it past the 13-minute mark, when they scored their first goal. I just say, 'I can't watch this, I can't watch this.' When they did finally win [the Cup] and I was watching the game, I got five texts from five guys that said in certain words, can you believe that?"

Is Bruce related to Ralph Friedgen or do all fat people look the same?

Boudreau is an odd guy. I thought it was all the good kind of odd, but I guess some of it is just plain old odd.
I'm reminded of a cheese-related incident on my high school soccer team resulted in one guy (a cheese hater) attempting to choke another player on the team. It took 3 of us to hold him back. When all the shouting died down, the anti-cheese player quietly said "I just hate cheese. Seriously."
