Mike Sellers Says D.C. Media Tear You Down

The dreaded D.C. sports media. (By Nick Wass - AP)

Like everyone's been saying, this has been a wacky week of Redskins fun and games. Here's my newest conclusion: excessive blog entries and TV reports about angst and anguish will marginally help fire up the team, which will emerge from Detroit with something like a 29-17 win. I feel very solid about this. When national experts expect certain games to zig, they almost always zag. And we've provided plenty of motivation. Thank us later.

I read at Cheap Seats Daily, though, that Mike Sellers wasn't thanking us yet, so I wanted to hear for myself. From Redskins.com, here was Sellers's take on the media, delivered on Wednesday.

"You know, our media here has been our harshest critics," Sellers said. "One of our coaches was stating when they were at another team that the media supported them. It seems like here, the media kind of guns after you if you're not up to their standards. Instead of boosting you up, they kind of tear you down. And we can't play into that role. We've just got to keep doing what we know we can do."

Are the D.C. sports media particularly frightful? Maybe, I guess, though that certainly hasn't been our historical reputation. And it does occur to me that Fox 5, NBC Washington, ESPN 980, and Comcast SportsNet all have various levels of monetary agreements with the franchise, while the copy of The Examiner I just picked up was wrapped in a four-page ad filled with Redskins "content," none of it of the negative sort.

Regardless, this building anger is a good thing. Check out Chris Cooley's blogrant, if you haven't yet:

Alright, I've spent the last two days listening to never ending gripe about how terrible the Washington Redskins are. Our coaching is dreadful. Zorn is on the hot seat. Our play calling is outright awful. Anyone can call better red zone plays. Our team is a bunch of overpaid bums. Getting booed by a bunch of "dim-wits." And I don't even need to mention the way fans despise our ownership. IT'S ALL [BLEEEP].

That's a 12-point win talking right there. A few more Redskins links:

* Jim Zorn calls the Detroit Lions "a tremendous team." A blogger responds that it's "at this point where Redskins fans should start to wonder if Jim Zorn is not only a capable coach, but a sane and functioning human being." (The World of Isaac)

* Although it turns out that Zorn also praised the Lions extensively before last year's game. (Detroit Free-Press)

* Billy Kilmer says Jason Campbell has a "great arm, but he needs to be a stronger leader." Mark May says Daniel Snyder is "Napoleon with a cell phone and deep pockets." Tre Johnson objects to the Redskins nickname. And other things from Redskins alums. (Lovey Land)

* The Redskins' new practice squad linebacker once filmed a series of hilarious ads for Iowa State. (Redskins Blog)

* And just in case you missed it, check out this excellent, excellent passage from Mike Wise's Jim Zorn column. It's about Joe Gibbs's rookie season, when he was 0-4.

Frank Herzog, the iconic former play-by-play announcer for the Washington Redskins, asked then-rookie coach Joe Gibbs, "Two, three more games like this, Joe, and does Mr. Cooke say that's it, goodbye?"

As Post columnist Dave Kindred chronicled, Gibbs replied with a smile, "That's up to Mr. Cooke. You'd have to ask Mr. Cooke that."

"See," Wise concludes, "they took their football serious then too." (WaPo)

I'm guessing that the "[BLEEP]" in Cooley's rant is a fill-in for "TRUE"?

Gibbs is 0-4? We've got to get rid of him. His play calling is horrible and he obviously doesn't have what it takes to lead us to the playoffs, much less the Super Bowl. I mean seriously, 0-4!?!?!
What is Cooke doing? Isn't Tom Flores available? And I'm sick of Theismann. He's a bum. Let's trade for Steve Grogan.

I'm guessing that the "[BLEEP]" in Cooley's rant is a fill-in for "BS"? Which is true...it IS all bull, and in a few weeks, the same Redskins fans that are calling for Zorn's head will be back to calling him a genius. And by January, these same fans will be saying they never had any doubt Zorn and Cambpell could get it done.

Fushezzi with quite possibly the post of the year.

In smaller cities, the local media is rah-rah towards their beloved sports teams. In large cities like DC and NY, the media has actual reporters who, you know, report, look up facts, that sort of stuff.

It's funny they can point to ONE comment from Herzog about Gibbs when he was 0-4. I wonder, can they point to any others? How long did they have to search through the old archives before they found something that remotely resembled the tone of today's coverage/outrage?

The media guns for the team and organization for one main reason:

Dan Snyder

The guy is the scum of the earth and has alientated everyone, including the fans AND MEDIA. Fans are beginning to fight back with their wallets (exhibit A - rows and rows of empty seats AT THE STINKING HOME OPENER) and the media continues to fight back with their words.

But I think the media is "just" in the coverage of this team regardless. We went from the class of the NFL to 18 years of mediocrity. What in the world do these guys expect?

But again I still think the "Snyder factor" makes it 20 times worse... but you know what, the idiot made his own bed. He could be beloved in this town, but instead he chose to be the villian. And for what? A couple more million (okay 10's of millions) for a guy who is already a billionare?

Bad move.

Let me just say that in the last 15 years that I can remember, the media had been especially soft on the organization. It was always how this is gonna be the year kinda talk.

But in the last 2 years, I would say that the media has become more cynical of the skins and rightfully so. This is a team that spends huge amounts of money yet is always near 8-8.

Current history (Snyder Era) is not favorable to redskins players. Its the same thing every year.

Also, the Wise quote doesn't compute. Herzog's question came 4 games into Gibbs' coaching career. Gibbs' was an unknown.

Zorn on the other hand has 18 games. Gibbs ultimately went in the right direction. Zorn is sliding in the wrong.

Painfully obvious you known nothing about the man you hate so dearly. Why don't you spend 10 minutes and read about who it is you despise so much.

REDSKIN OFFICIALS REWORK SPECIAL PROMOTION SCHEDULE
ASHLAND, VA (SEPTEMBER 24, 2009) -- The Washington Redskins today announced that they are reworking their schedule for several promotional events set for the balance of the football season because of a series of unforeseen events.
For example, team officials said they are canceling a Jason Campbell Bubblehead Giveaway promotion originally set for the next home game -- an October 4 match against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Team officials explained that production problems by the toymaker in China left the replica quarterback’s head firmly affixed to his shoulders, without any apparent ability to move, turn its head from side to side or look downfield.
Said one team official, “It isn’t much of a bubblehead of our quarterback, especially since the head won’t work.”
The toymaker responded, “Admittedly, it’s pretty hard to turn a bubblehead into a pro quarterback, but I can assure you that this is the most faithfully detailed and accurate replica that we have ever produced. Just look at the blank stare and funny mustache. Frankly, we can’t help it if JC can’t read defenses, check down to secondary receivers when the primaries are covered, or throw for more than 7 yards downfield – but we have been able to reproduce each of these tendencies in these dolls.”
In other news, team officials indicated they are putting off plans for a Coach Jim Zorn Appreciation Day, as many team insiders wonder if he’ll still be around by the time that promotion date -- an October 18 game against the Kansas City Chiefs –- rolls around.

Posted by: Vic1 | September 24, 2009 7:21 PM | Report abuse

However, team officials are assuring fans that the “Play Clinton Portis” promotion set for the October 26 home game against the Philadelphia Eagles will still take place as scheduled, and to make certain that the star running back is still available at that late date in the season, team coaches have been instructed to give the running back a “free pass” and not practice or play him until then.
Team officials are also announcing a new promotion for the November 15 game against the Denver Broncos -- called “Vinny’s Draw” -- which gives fans an opportunity to buy a raffle ticket to bet who starts at right guard for the team’s next two games. The winner will then be picked in a blind drawing by Redskin Vice President for Football Operations Vinny Cerrato.

During the December 6 game against the New Orleans Saints, randomly selected fans will be invited onto the field during actual games to field and return punts for the team. Said one Redskin coach, “We're looking forward to this one. The fans couldn’t do any worse than any of the punt returners we have at the moment, and we might even find some real talent out there.
During a December 21 game against the New York Giants, Redskin officials had planned to wear some throwback uniforms to remind fans of the team’s long gone history of Superbowl winning seasons. However, representatives from each of earlier the teams are appealing to Redskin officials to not allow the current team to wear their colors or let the players anywhere near their old Lombardi Trophies – fearing they might fumble the football shaped trophies and leave them tarnished.
While the rest of the promotion schedule is still in flux, one final event for this lost season will definitely take place -- a so-called Fan Appreciation Day set for the final home game of the season -- a December 27 game against the Dallas Cowboys. Said a spokesman for team owner Dan Snyder, “After the merciless abuse of our fans this season, it’s only natural that we would finish up with a big lie and tell them how much we love them. And if they don’t like it, we’ll let our lawyer dogs loose on them.”

Vic, you're neither clever nor funny.

Get a life.

Posted by: Barno1 | September 24, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Actually, I find Vic both clever and funny. Barno, you are the humorless one here. By now it's obvious you are either a relative of Dan snyder or a member of the skins pr staff. If the latter, you are not very good at your job. Stop referring to the one piece of positive "press" snyder has received in the last decade.

The team may turn it around this year, but it will be in spite of snyder not because of him.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard the "you're a relative of Dan Snyder" or "you work for the Redskins" line. Is it really that hard to come up with something original on your own, dcsportsfairweather?

Posted by: Barno1 | September 24, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Ok, barno, you are Just clueless. Is that more original or do you get that alot too. I suppose a 0 td performance against one of the worst teams in the league is acceptable to you but not to me, a long time season ticket holder...hardly fairweather. Just wondering what you are going to say if the lose to Detroit on sunday? Remind us that Danny is kind to puppies?

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | September 24, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Hilarious that the guy who is blaming Snyder for zero TDs on Sunday instead of blaming the 2 guys responsible for that (Sellers and D. Thomas) is calling someone else "clueless"

Pot. Kettle. Black.

Having season tickets doesn't in any way make you less of a fairweather. Many people have Redskins season tickets as more of a status symbol than due to team loyalty. You're a fairweather fan if you're threatening to no longer root for the team if we lose a game or don't win pretty...that's just how it is.

Barno... take off the rose-colored glasses and put your money where your mouth is. Guarantee that you will donate $5,000 to a local DC charity if the skins don't make the playoffs this year.

Posted by: Daspig | September 25, 2009 12:12 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, I'm pretty much fed up with the Skins. I've got no problem at all with Zorn, and I'll stop calling our QB Candle as soon as he shows that he can take a close game, put it on his own shoulders, and win it.

That said, the leadership of this team is a joke. Snyder and Cerrato need to die in a fire, and hopefully someone worth a damn will take over the team. Or, we could bring Shotty back, and resurrect his contract....nah, SCREW WITH THE CENSORED F WORD him, he went against ownership!

Posted by: ncromcr | September 25, 2009 2:32 AM | Report abuse

Hold on a second...we're still 1-1 right? Undefeated at home?

Do you get extra points/wins for winning 41-0 vs. 9-7?

With our defense, did you expect anything less then a bunch of 9-7, 10-3, 14-10 games?

Seriously, I'm the biggest Redskins homer you'll find but the sky isnt f'n falling folks. So grab a beer, put in your tampon and relax for a few weeks. Sure its fun to debate and analyze your team but this is just ridiculous. Are you people serious?

And for anyone out there sh*tting on the Skins....I've got $100 on the Skins this week. Anyone of you whinners wants it, let me know.

Sellars like most of the Deadskins needs to get out of weight room and away from the practice field and out into the real world. The punk needs to check out the coverage of the Eagles and the Giants by the media. What would this little girl say about the NY media!

Sellars like most of the Deadskins needs a good dose of reality. And he needs to stop running his mouth and work on his pass catching!

If Sellars and the rest of ladies on the Deadskins think the media is tough jsut wait until Detriot gets its first win. And we will hear these p*ssies whine!

If anyone has his money where his mouth is, it's Barno. I probably have too much invested on this season but we'll find out if it was a smart move in about 3 1/2 months won't we...

We all know where Barno's mouth really is, between the knee-area and belly button-area of Dan Syder, Ralph ".500" Friedgen, and Gary "The God" Williams.
