Jaworski: "It's NOT the playcalling"

If you're not lucky enough to be going to FedEx Field Monday night, there's a good chance you'll be listening to Ron Jaworski's analysis of Eagles-Redskins, including the current turmoil in Ashburn. For a sneak preview, Jaws appeared on the Tony Kornheiser Show on ESPN 980 Friday morning.

(Yes, today is one long promo for ESPN 980.)

Jaws said he believed Friday's guarantee from Vinny Cerrato that Jim Zorn will finish the season as the Skins' head coach, but he also said the recent maneuvering with Sherm Lewis doesn't address the true problem.

"This change right now [in] the playcalling is unsettling," Jaworski said. "And in preparation for this game, I've gone through every Redskins game. It's not about the playcalling. It just seems to me it's some sort of crutch right now that somebody wants to hang their hat on. It's about the execution of plays that are called. It's that simple.

"I've gone through every single play offensively. Can you, in hindsight, look back and say, 'Oh, you should have called this, you should have called that?' Sure, when you have access to results, that second-guessing is easy. But if I look at the plays and break down where the ball should be going, the things that are happening, it's NOT the playcalling. It's execution."

This is what players and coaches have all said, and while many fans and analysts would substitute "it's the talent" for "it's execution," there seems to be consensus on the "it's not the playcalling" part. But turmoil or no turmoil, Jaws said he thought this would be a close game.

"People are looking at the problems in Washington, [but] this is an NFC East game," he said. "I mean, you just have to look at the history of this rivalry. I was a part of it for 10 years. Good teams, bad teams, it almost seems like it was irrelevant. There was a real hatred and bad blood between Philadelphia and Washington, Philadelphia and New York, Washington and New York. Throw Dallas in the mix and you've got a lot of anger. These games have always been close.

"I like Philly in the game, but I think Washington's gonna cover. I mean, I played in this rivalry for 10 years against Theismann and his crew. When we're on the football field, we hate each other. The cities hate each other for that 60-minute period. It's a great, great competitive football game, with intense rivalry, and it's one of those games where every team gives everything they have, no matter what the circumstances surrounding the game are."

This squares very well with what Santana Moss said earlier this week.

"We've played them plenty of times, so regardless of how many games they've lost, how many games we've lost, it's always a good rivalry, a big rivalry," Moss said.

And it squares not at all with Jim Zorn's comments earlier this week on CSN's Redskins Nation.

"It's not so much a rival," Zorn said, "but we love playing the Eagles."

Lemme get this straight: the men of The Danny are pushing the bus down the road on flat tires, but the Skins are gonna cover the spread because, by golly, it's an NFC East rivalry?

Unless the spread goes to something like 14 as it should, the Iggles are possibly the easiest pick in the history of sports betting.

Uh, let me remind everyone that this is the same Eagles team that lost to the Redskins twice last year, and to the RAIDERS last week.

This Eagles team is the first team in the last 3 years to not be able to score a touchdown against the Al Davis Rumblin' Retards.

I don't think it's a stretch to say the game will be close.

if jaws thinks i stop hating philly once the game ends, he would be startlingly wrong.

@dmorgan6617: The Skins weren't sending in the plays by bucket brigade last year.

Did I say 14? Make that 21.

"It's not so much a rival," Zorn said, "but we love playing the Eagles." and what are the Redskins team colors again Zorn? red & black.. dont worry moron you wont get a chance to find out who our rivals are anyway...

I'm a little undecided about my prediction right now. The Eagles' offense is struggling right now, and they will be playing against a much better defense this week than they did in Oakland. On the other hand, they almost certainly will win if they can score 10 points. The Redskins' offense is so unbelievably bad right now, that I predict the Eagles' D is going to go gangbusters.

skins cover, and might win.

still awful though

Why is the internet blog full of crappy comments from crappy people. Did we invent this thing to take the place of the prank phone call? People post on the internet just to insult, hate and make unintelligent remarks because they feel no one really knows who they are. Its not a very happy place. The internet blog reminds me of New York City in the 1970's.

Will Jaws be critical and point out weaknesses in the Redskins players or execution?

I can't wait for the J Campbell comments.

A few years back i suggested the WashPost sign Jaworski or the former Minnesota QB to write a post game analysis for the Redskin games like they did on ESPN. The

Who is a rival?

Play calling and execution go hand in hand with having an offensive line that are able to run and pass block. Without that everything else is a moot point. Looking back Lapdog Sock Puppet Cerrato should of drafted low over the course of the past 4 college drafts and obtained quality offensive linemen much the same way Bobby Bethard obtained Russ Grimm, Joe Jacoby, Jeff Bostic, Don Warren, Mark May and many others that played and stayed and became the hogs, stalwarts that moved the line of scrimmage, controlled the clock, ably set up play action pass no matter if it was Jay Schrader, Joe Theismann, Joe Washington, John Riggins, Riggs, Clark, Monk or whomever on offense the constant was the offensive line. A mildly retarded person knows this. So enough about play calling and execution, all the problems of this team squarely fall on the shoulders of Lapdog Sock Puppet Cerrato and Nickel Snatching Snyder. The best day in DC is when they will both leave.

No offense Jaws, it's the play calling.

When you have to score points with your punter and run gadget plays like the half back option inside the 10 it's the play calling.

When you don't kick a field goal to force the other team to score a TD instead of a touch down, the give the ball up on downs it's the play calling.

When you don't try and kick a field goal at the end of the half and just give the ball up and go into the locker room it's the play calling.

When you try and GIVE away a time out and challenge a pile up in the middle of the field it's the play calling.

When the guy who is calling the plays only knows how to run left and insists the moron who replaced the pro bowl left tackle who got hurt and would not be on anyones roster, says "there won't be any break down in plays" it's the play calling.

Zorn sucks, and the GM who hired the players who can't "execute" hired this guy so it's also the GMing.

Sorry Jaws, it's the play calling.

And THEN that same guy, the guy who calls the Skins colors red and black and insists the Eagles game is not a rivalry, is the same guy who is calling the plays then it's still the play calling.

It's the play calling.

You see my point yet Jaws?

Did he say what the problems are?

Can we get past the speculation BS and talk to the literal issues?

Posted by: oknow1 | October 23, 2009 3:10 PM | Report abuse

"Not a rival?" Are you kidding me? "Not a rival?" What the !@#$%!!!!! "Not a rival?" Tell Zorn to pull the "binky" out of his mouth and be a football coach! A professional football coach with balls!

"Not a rival?" Talk about no passion. It's no wonder the players play with no passion.

Posted by: motiongrfx | October 23, 2009 3:11 PM | Report abuse

It actually is the play calling on some instances. But the reason Zorn probably throws down those BS gadget plays is because he knows he doesn't have a line that can block, a quarterback who can scramble, and receivers who can get open and catch balls.

If none of those things happen, it's EXECUTION.

Zorn's been a bit too nice. The Redskins stink.

But I'll watch them anyway, because I'm an idiot.

Jaws is right....it IS the execution. The play calling has been suspect at times but it is not to blame the way everyone is blaming it. It's the effin' players. Our 2009 Washington Redskins offense has mediocre players at best and thats the bitter truth. I also blame Campbell for a lot of this. Our great black hype turned out to be a complete bust (O-line or no o- line.....you cant blame all his 40 starts in the NFL on the o-line....sorry). When you cant score from the 1-yard line against the Lions there are some issues. Should have kicked a FG....blah blah blah. Dont blame the play calling.

Jaws: It's not the playcalling.

Zorn: Yea I know.

Jaws: It's not the playcalling.

Zorn: Yea......I know.

Jaws: No...Jim...it's not the playcalling.

Zorn: Don't mess with me.

Jaws: It's not the playcalling.

Zorn: Not you Jaws....not you!

Jaws: It's not the playcalling.

Zorn: (Suddenly starts sobbing and hugs Jaws)

Jaws: It's ok....let it out.....

It's not so much a rivalry? Where does Zorn think he is, still in Seattle?

I agree with Jaws about execution, it's something I haven't seen thus far, and if it dosen't get better we can just expect MOS.

I can't believe Zorn saying the Eagles are not a rival for the Redskins? If he didn't know he should have kept his mouth shut. It is a definite rivalry!!!!

Anyway since its execution why hasn't the head coach replaced players who are not executing?
