Snyder gets tarred and feathered

When the D.C. Lottery and its ad agency were coming up with its new POWERBALL campaign, the Redskins foment hadn't yet boiled over. It was hardly even warm. This was back during just a regular preseason, filled with optimism and hope and the promise of grilled Tofurkey sausages and an undefeated fantasy football campaign and maybe some hot Redskins playoff action.

Which meant that no one at the Lottery or at MDB Communications was thinking about Redskins ownership when they wrote the script for this 30-second spot, touting the benefit of "Strength in numbers" and unity in office lottery pools. You know, how it only works if everyone participates, and how you don't participate at your peril, and all that.

In the ad, one character--who previously hadn't participated in his office's pool--finally decides to join in. Turns out he was tarred and feathered as part of his recruitment. This character--the only named character in the entire spot--is called "Snyder."

Now, why is he called "Snyder?" Well, Cary Hatch is the president and CEO of MDB Communications, the advertising agency for the D.C. Lottery. And she happened to marry a guy named Doug Snyder. Which is why "Snyder" seemed like both an inside joke for her husband and son, and a relatively inoffensive and safe name for a made-up Lottery player.

"Well, we thought it was safe," Hatch told me Thursday afternoon, with a laugh.

Because after the spot was filmed, and not long before its debut (scheduled for next week), people started using that last name an awful lot around the water cooler. Folks from the agency and the Lottery realized that in this particular climate, in this particular town, it was going to be hard to ignore the sight of a man named Snyder being tarred and feathered. Rather than running away from the connection, the Lottery decided to have some fun with it, which is why the screenshot above is on the Lottery's home page as I type. (See DCLottery.com.)

"We knew that the name Snyder would resonate in the D.C. market," said new media specialist Derrick Eckardt, who called the selection of that name "an absolute coincidence."

"We thought this message would most succinctly get people interested and draw attention to the ad."

Which it seems to have done. After The Big Lead posted the video earlier this week, it got more than 3,000 page views in 48 hours. That's considered lot for a D.C. Lottery ad that hasn't even hit the air yet.

"Sometimes timing is everything in life, right?" joked Hatch, a native Washingtonian and longtime Redskins fan. "We never could have foreseen this....We shot this commercial a month ago, prior to the meltdown. Sometimes things happen that ignite, and this would be one of them."

"Sorry Mr. Snyder," she added, sincerely. "Sometimes these things happen."

Here's an idea: take those little Geico signs they handed out at the last game and paste over it the message of your choice. Then, if they take away your sign, they must admit that it's because of the message, not because of their sign ban.

This is the DC Sports Bog, unless I tuned into The Faaaaan....

i was going to suggest something similar. Make whatever sign you want, just put "Sponsored by Geico" on it. Either they let it in, or Geico has it's name thrown in the trash.

Prediction: before the next game, the Redskins will have officially recanted on the sign thing.

It's important to remember that the sign thing is just ONE of the grievances against Dan Snyder.

It's never a good thing when you pile on. There's been a lot of piling on. The Redskins STINK but the personal attacks on Snyder are bushleague and getting quite sickening.

Tough luck Rickyroge.

Here is another idea. Everytime that you get a mailer from Geico send it back to them so they have to pay the postage. Then call Geico and express your outrage about the little jerk.

Great concept...

But since you went public with the idea early, it will quickly be deemed 'unlawful assembly on private property' by Herr Schinder and his 3rd Right Propoganda Policy Party.

'Ill Doouche' will have you drawn and quartered for treason.

I am disappointed. I was hoping the headline of the post was literally true. It's what the guy deserves.

Watch out Dan! With all this "relentless negative coverage in The Washington Post" you're going to find yourself working for Dan $nyder at triple your current salary...

"This is the DC Sports Bog, unless I tuned into The Faaaaan...."

Hey 117, you know what the best way to affect change in subject on the bog is? Make sure you click on every single redskins story and make sure you comment at least one time, if not more.

You complain that Steinz is selling out for clicks and comments, and to fight that you give him clicks and comments?

You're just as bad as the Skins fans who keep going to the games: "Down with Snyder!...Ohhh, $8 beers? I'll take 3."

Posted by: VTDuffman | October 30, 2009 9:17 AM | Report abuse

This Skins management bashing is getting old REAL FAST. This bog is becoming a joke. There other teams playing in this town right now, but 99.9% of the last bog posts have been about the Skins failures. It’s getting tired real fast.

season ticket holders...you try to make the case that you've already purchased tickets so it hard to boycott the games...then you complain about the high prices for concessions while in the stadium...as a former season ticket holder, I recommend the following: Host a party at home with your buds (that's your tailgate) and watch the game on your HD flat screen. You'll save a ton of money, still see the game, get the tailgate experience by grilling out at home and make a statement to Snyder. Then come back to games when the FO fixes this mess....

Keep up the good work Bog. Napolean is hoping that people will forget he's the WORST. OWNER. EVER.

Posted by: cjzimm | October 30, 2009 9:40 AM | Report abuse

Hey Rickyroge:
The reason people dislike Snyder so much has little to do with the performance of the team. It is because he is an elitist who figures he is royalty because he is so rich. Take for example the cutting down of 100 trees on national park land so that he could have an unobstructed view of the Potomac. Then there is his behavior at the first owner's meeting he attended. He was so rude to the hotel staff that the manager threatened to put his bags out on the street. Let us not forget the suing of fans already in financial straits. And lastly the banning of signs at the hell hole know as Fed-ex. There are many more stories like this about this sterling fellow who owns the Burgundy and Gold.

Daaaaaaaaaan. The Caps are 8-2-2. At some point this becomes irresponsible buddy. Come on now, remind us why we love ya.

Posted by: MarylanDChris | October 30, 2009 10:31 AM | Report abuse

You know folks, we the readers can take over a blog by writing about the Caps or anything else if we want to. And what a good subject. They are off to a quick start and especially OV who has 6 2 goal games in the 12 games they have played and a nice lead in our division.

Posted by: chopin224 | October 30, 2009 10:41 AM | Report abuse

Dan Signberg should continue to cover the sign thing. (Maybe temporarily change Sports Bog to Redskins Outsider?) But he would be missing a good story if he didn't ask the military what it thinks about some rich guy banning wives from writing notes to their husbands in afganistan... as well as seeing if Fox News is interested in that story.

What I would love to see are all the fans bringing their signs and not being allowed it and starting a nice bonfire. Maybe call it Snydernacht or something?

Is Pretzel Boy having his minions invade the blogs to post comments about how our bashing ownership is becoming old and childish? Screw that and screw you Pretzel Boy. I was taught to assist old women cross the street when they need help and cant do it on their own. You on the other hand were taught to run em' over and take their belongings. I'll never stop bashing you, its the only pleasure I get going to the games. Oh and for those wondering why season ticket holders still go to games. Look if I spent the money I'm going to go - or sell the ticket. However, I do guarantee booing for 98% of the game regardless of score just of principal!

Posted by: doesntmatter | October 30, 2009 12:51 PM | Report abuse

There's no reason why we can't discuss the early success of the Caps and Wizards on those insider boards and can't have the Bog swing its truth-seeking golden lasso around a fan upheaval unprecedented in all of DC sports history. The Danny is in control of when this story dies.

Until then...

@rickyroge

Daniel Snyder does not read these blogs! If he did, he would have made changes a long time ago, before it got this bad and personal! So who cares what is being said or typed here! Let the fans vent and complain here because it is better than the other "face to face" options.

Posted by: JohnWWW | October 30, 2009 2:45 PM | Report abuse

Here is a great article on what Daniel Snyder should do during these personal attacks:

Hope he does read this!
