Theismann: "This Is Not Professional Football"

(By John McDonnell - TWP)

Joe Theismann's nickname is Sunshine, and he tried his darndest for about a minute this morning.

"I'm gonna not start talking about the Redskins," he said, to open his weekly radio show on ESPN 980. "I want to start with something positive today, because there's been a lot of negative, so let's start with positive."

Ok, I'm down. You know what you're gonna get with Theismann, and that's the warming glow of optimism. So what followed was about a minute of college football chatter. Soak up those rays, everybody.

"That's the sunshine this morning, folks," Theismann said, to wrap up that minute. "Now we start with a little bit of the clouds, which are rolling in."

And then, Joey Sunshine let it rain. Highlights:

* "I'm not gonna get into a bunch of statistics this morning, because your eyes and my eyes tell me what's going on. This is not a good offensive football team."

* "You know how they got [their lead]? They had a [13]-yard touchdown drive and a one-yard touchdown drive. Two drives, 14 points, total [14] yards. That's disgusting. It's disgraceful. It's, um, it's not professional football. And it's unacceptable, to be perfectly honest with you."

* Brian Orakpo is "a work in progress. Seems like this whole football team's a work in progress, to be honest with you. He was trailing the tight end. He's a very effective pass rusher. He is not a very good linebacker at this point. And it seems like this football team is a constant work in progress."

* "There were high expectations for this football team. Now, I think if you're a Redskins fan, all you would like to see is 60 good hard minutes of football on either side. And really don't care, to be honest with you, really don't care what the outcome's gonna be. I mean, the important thing is is they go out and play hard."

* "I mean, DeAngelo Hall is a Pro Bowl corner. Jake Delhomme faked him out and got a first down. If that doesn't insult me for the rest of the year, to set my jaw and prove that I'm much better than you've seen, I don't know what will. When somebody embarrasses you, that's when you really rise to the occasion."

* "Wasted timeouts. Eight minutes to go in the game, the Redskins have no timeouts."

* "The offensive line is in shambles."

* "I'm not familiar with the West Coast system as far as an offense goes, I know it has to do with getting people out. I've always been of the school of protection first. So if you have to keep a back in, if you have to keep a tight end in, and you run three-receiver routes, then that's what you do, but you give your quarterback a chance to be able to make plays. That's something that did not happen for the Redskins."

Jeez. I'm not sure how I feel about Joey Pouring Nasty Rainstorm, but this is definitely a change.

If Snyder has lost Theismann, he has lost the war.

Looks like everyone can see what's wrong with this team other than the two jack-tards running it. Sad days ahead for us fans.

Fire Vinny!

JACK-TARDS!! lol funny ralston21.
Pathetic for us but funny.

Danny has some serious mental health issues. Repeating the same mistakes. deja vu all over again letting a coach dangle and twist in the wind waiting for the axe to fall. Power issues of a small man? small mind for sure...

If Snyderatto lost Theisman, the only supporter possibly left is Barno.

This team is a joke. Sad.

When the entire roster gets blown up this off season - I can name 9 guys worth keeping. Very sad situation. Agree or disagree:

Rocky McIntosh
Fletcher - getting old but i keep him

Santana - getting old but I keep him

At least Joey Sunshine didn't make it rain.

Cerrato = Barno, so obvious

Joey T can always rub people the wrong way but he does know what he's talking about.
A new cast of characters to run thing is what is needed. Let Snyder stay since it's his toy and he's not giving it up. He can sit in his office swilling big cigars in his mouth and sign checks. Get a GM and let him choose his coach and then they can work together and build a staff. It's a novel idea but what the heck.

Uggh...I love guys like Joey, and B mitch,
Zorn is not a coach, he'll never be one, he is toooooo soft. someone should play him a tape of how Mike Singiltory is coaching up these guys in the Bay area.. This guy cannot get his three second rounders to catch a flue let alone catch balls, (why can't we draft like the Eagles or the Giants)..and then Vinney...I don't think Snyder get it.. (and I have always supported Snyder), you have to GET RID OF VINNY, GET RID OF VINNY. can we please lose the rest of our games, get a Tim Teabow, and bring a a coach like Cowher, Shannhon, John Gruden, who are tough physical, if the Redskins don't play Physical ball and play like bunch of Girls in pants (hall, can't bring down a QB) we have no chance in this Division and in this league. TOUGH< PHYSCIALL<FOOTBALL is a must...Redsksins are too SOFT, coaches, Players, and the OWNER.

Posted by: skins_rules | October 12, 2009 10:43 AM | Report abuse

Cowher wont work for Snyder, too close to Marty. Shanahan lost it in Denver. Gruden please no!! They would all want control, Cowher was up and down in Pittsburgh but the ownership let him work through it and their front office is good. Look at some of these strong teams, get a quality guy from their front office and blow it up and start over with the good pieces that are left.

Posted by: clt_skins | October 12, 2009 10:50 AM | Report abuse

we will never have a GM until Danny leaves. He will never learn.

Posted by: capsfansince74 | October 12, 2009 10:53 AM | Report abuse

We want someone other then Vinny to have the controll, even jerry jones hired Bill to fix his team, the guys that are making plays (Romo, ware, spencer, miles austin,) are the guys that Bill brought and build a team around, we have good pieces.

On offense, realease the following people
Jason campbell
Randy thomas
your (Second rounders) which stinks

On defense,
Phillip Daniales replaced by (ORAKPO) should play DE.
Sorry Carlos Roger ( who can't catch or cover)
and New a DC.

we want someone other then vinny and snyder having controll. I am sick of this team losing every year, why can't we learn from the Giants, or the Eagles in our division. We want TOUGHNESS BACK IN DC. WE WANT THE HITEM IN THE MOUTH SKINS. THEY BULLY OF THE DIVISION.

How many no shows at Fed Ex this weekend?

Posted by: ridgely1 | October 12, 2009 11:04 AM | Report abuse

Joey T and Snyder are good friends and business partners. Snyder respects what he has to say. Something is about to happen. Either Barno1...I mean Cerrato or Zorn are up out of there soon.

Posted by: sire1 | October 12, 2009 11:17 AM | Report abuse

Clearly Joe Theeeesman is now part of the media, and as such, has an agenda against the Redskins. Obviously, they have the most talent in the league, on paper, and are only one player away from being a SB contender.

If only the media would wouldn't be so harsh. And the booing fans too. Yes, the media and the fans...that's what's hurting this talented team that has the best front office in football.

Posted by: 4-12 | October 12, 2009 11:22 AM | Report abuse

Jim Zorn is way over his head. There are no signs to show that the offense is improving. We can't block and we can not develop our youth talents at the skill positions. All of teams backsups on O-Line are undrafted free agents. They were undrafted for a reason.

Landry is a part of the problem this year. He has missed many tackles because he's trying to make highlight-reel hits.

I think he's trying to get on the opposite side of the highlight reel after Jacobs bowled him over in the opener last year.

So nice that Theismann has awoken from his slumber. It's one thing to be a complete no-account homer (which he is) it's quite another to be literally THE last person to see all the problems with this sorry organization. For a former NFL'er (and a pretty good one) Theismann has zero credibility when it comes to analysis. Just think -- used to be this guy AND Kornheiser in the same booth calling games!!! Ughhh....

Posted by: dbunkr | October 12, 2009 11:42 AM | Report abuse

I HOPE Snyder has "lost Theismann," but I bet it's more like ZORN has lost Theismann, which is a shame. Because it's SNYDER and CERRATO who are the true problems here.

Yes, I agree that Zorn stinks. From the moment he announced the colors as "Maroon and black," I knew something was off with the guy, but hoped he's succeed. At 6-2, we were ALL feeling good, but ... it was all a mirage. He should be fired today.

But whoever is brought in next will just be the next exercise in utter mediocrity at best UNLESS that IDIOT Snyder finally decides to can his bug-eyed buddy and step his butt AWAY from picking players and "building" this team. He knows NOTHING about building a team with chemistry and PASSION, because all he knows is how to be a tyrannical businessman. He treats his non-player employees like expendable garbage and has ever since he took over out there. He is bad karma incarnate. I wish he would just sell the team and leave town, but obviously that won't happen.

The ONLY way he can go through a Scrooge-like transformation is to find the willingness to step away, to hire football guys to RUN THE TEAM and to dump that pathetic, sorry, horrible excuse for a "personnel guy," who has left us with terrible lines on both sides of the ball, wasted picks on receivers who do nothing week in and week out, etc., etc., etc.

Until Snyder figures this out, the ugly state of this team will continue, with or without Zorny.

if we're talking about who to keep i think los should be added to this list. he can't catch but the notion that he can't cover is a complete lie. he's definite better than anyone else on the roster by leaps and bounds including the other starter, dhall. in five games all you see or hear is dhall you know why b/c that's who everyone is throwing at. los doesn't even show up on the screen in three of the games b/c nothing was thrown his way the entire time. yes i would love to have him pull in more INT's but dear god if you can't see that a corner even with bad hands that makes opposing qb's forgot that they have receivers on his side of the field then you must be some kinda snyderatto clone.

Posted by: cornix | October 12, 2009 11:58 AM | Report abuse

@capsfansince74 I could not agree more. My offensive list consisted of only Cooley and Dockery but you could make an argument for Santana as well.

Sadly I think with an AVERAGE supporting cast, and a scheme that fits his talents, JC could be a great QB. He may well be a great QB in Miami next year, or perhaps in New England or New Orleans or another team in a few years. He will never be a good quarterback in a quick release West Coast scheme, but he is actually a very smart and effective pocket passer when given the weapons and the time to use them.

Posted by: jksesq1 | October 12, 2009 12:26 PM | Report abuse

We need an offensive line more than a new quarterback. What's Tim Tebow going to do here? Run for his life because the line can't block worth a darn? It's a total sieve because the FO ignored it for two years, opting instead for "sexy picks" and big names that haven't worked out. Vinny needs to go, then, after that, get some talent on that line.

Posted by: stwasm | October 12, 2009 12:30 PM | Report abuse

Joe T. & B.Mitch make good points about Zorn etc. Now let's think...We have an owner with too much money and ego to even bring in a competent replacement for incompetent Vinny. Those of us who have followed the Skins for years have gone through losing seasons before but at least during those years the team(s) exhibited a sense of determination and gave maximum effort. Danny Boy signs questionable players players to exorbitant contracts, why not hire young hungry players for less, the results COULD NOT possibly be any worse. The Redskins play in the absolute best conference in Professional Football. I can only pray that soon our team will be in a position to compete in this conference. If losing is the only option the players on this team can accept for themselves THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED. Perhaps the time is here for the players to rise up and exert their best efforts to win, not because of what management and the coaching staff does but despite them.......
Give me three years of rebuilding with young talent and a new, qualified GM and coaching staff over this underachieving collection of players and underperforming management and staff. Theismann may rub you the wrong way at times but he is a smart football man and a Redskins guy through and through. When Theismann, Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff are all saying pretty much the same things I'm thinking.................

When the entire roster gets blown up this off season - I can name 9 guys worth keeping. Very sad situation. Agree or disagree?

Orakpo - yes, but must move to DE full time (draft or sign a true SLB during off-season)

Landry - yes, but must move to SS full time (draft or sign a ballhawk FS during off-season)

Haynesworth - definite yes

Rocky McIntosh - play out current contract, but probably not resign

Horton - yes (for special teams, and safety depth)

Fletcher - yes, but to play out current contract only

Dockery - keep for now

Cooley - definite yes

Santana - possible trade to contender, if we are truely rebuilding - he is the only older guy on the roster with any trade value, he deserves a shot with a winning team

Definite cuts (cap hit be danged):

Campbell - not a cut, but definitely don't resign

Rogers - can we make him a restricted FA and see if someone will give a pick for him? If not, we keep him - he can cover, he just can't catch.

Posted by: PDXskin | October 12, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

I don't care what coach you bring in cause they won't succeed because there is no Offensive line and we have just one receiver. JC is a good quaterback with zero time to throw. Vinne and his but buddy have screwed this once proud organization. I hope that Danny boy gets it and hires a GM. I really believe that Zorn is going to be a good coach. He just doesn't have enough star players on offense. Thomas, Kelly and Davis are horrible. Vinnie and Danny boy, please let it go. PLEASE!!!!!!! You guys have embarrassed us for so long, PLEASE LET IT GO!!!!!!

DAMN! I just real glad "Sunshine" isn't doing the color commentary for my Oakland Raiders. I am very jealous that your Skins got 2 TD's in one game.
